Basically he took Freud and made him weirder but also more useful.
His main idea is that you are not some clear rational “self” who knows what you want. Your desires are shaped by language, other people, status, childhood, shame, fantasies, etc. You want things partly because of what they mean socially, not just because you “naturally” want them.

He’s useful for understanding why people chase approval, repeat bad patterns, sabotage themselves, or build an identity around what others think of them. Not saying he’s always right, but he had good tools for thinking about desire and alienation.

In Lacan, it doesn’t just mean “other people.” It means the whole symbolic order you’re born into. Language, family roles, law, culture, status, morality, what counts as normal, what counts as shameful, etc. What Lacan calls the "Big Other".
So even your most private desires are partly shaped by that outside structure. You don’t desire in a vacuum. You desire through language, through recognition, through what you think others want from you.
Lacan also has the Real, jouissance, lack, fantasy, the mirror stage, etc, as concepts.

The Real is the part of life that doesn’t fit neatly into that symbolic order set by the Big Other.
Language, law, morality, status, etc. try to make the world meaningful. But some things resist being properly explained or absorbed. Like trauma, death, sex, madness, bodily disgust, sudden panic, impossible contradictions, that indescribable feeling that reality has cracked.
That’s the "Real". Not “reality” in the normal sense, but the point where our normal meanings fail. It’s what comes back as anxiety, horror, obsession, or breakdown when the symbolic system can no longer contain it.
