Humanity used to do this up until 2008. I think the Haiti relief effort 2010 was the final episode of this kind. Even during the cold war the powers that be could come together and solve acid rain, ozone layer, international space station etc. now everyone is extremely cynical and just pursues their own interests in this moment.

Making the world a better place is like curing cancer or eradicating some other disease, it is not profitable, what is profitable is creating a drug that stabilises ones condition that you can prescribe to someone for the the rest of their long life. Same with making a world a better place. Governments, various international and national organisations are constantly working towards it (read: getting funding and being paid), if they actually do make it better place then they will lose their jobs and their source of income, so it will never happen.
