Objectively a worse game than Arcania. The fact that people consider Arcania the black sheep of the series is mind-boggling, at least parts of Arcania like Tooshooo feel somewhat like a proper Gothic game

Gothic 1 + 2 were pretty linear too, only they hid it with clever game design. Germans GODS did it much better than Jeets who made Arcania whose idea of linear game design is closing off the next section of the map behind doors which can only be opened using a key some NPC gives you for doing a boring fetch quest.
I will take smart linearity of Gothic 1 + 2 and goyslop linearity of Arcania over Gothic 3 "Oblivion in Gothic universe" approach of allowing you to traverse the whole map from the start (that is until a pack of wolves stunlocks you and kills you since in this shitty game wolves are much more intimidating foes than dragons)
At least Arcania did not have a rebel bases located within viewing distance from Orc-occupied towns and didn't let you march in a full royal paladin armor into Orc settlements

Man I feel old.
I was born in the late 90s, and I'm probably from the last generation who had parents that had never played video games growing up. Everything was weird and strange to them, everything was a PlayStation even though I never owned one.
It's so jarring seeing kids have parents who are also gamers. It seems so surreal.
