They are relatively Northern, they border the light-skinned Germany & Benelux in flat terrain as opposed to the mountainous border that divide France between the darker Spain & Italy. They also are very close geographicaly and historically to the british Isles, arguably the most pale place in the world...Yet most french I see, regardless of province, are almost identical to any portuguese, spaniard or italian and a huge chunk could be mistaken even for turks.
