I work in architecture in my country. Most firms require you to have a master's degree, so that's a minumum 6 years of education you need to pay for just to get a job in this field. For most people, myself included, that means taking out student loans. After that you're going to make anywhere from $45k-60k a year for the first 5-10 years of your career. I've seen some jobs in major cities paying as little as $35k, which is absolutely insane considering the cost of living in American cities.I'm not even salaried, but I make $25/hour which works out to about $50k a year. Fortunately I live in a small rust belt city where the cost of living isn't too bad, but it's still embarrassing that I'm almost 30 with a master's degree and I'm working for an hourly wage. I have friends my age in other fields making 2-3 times my salary talking about getting married, buying a house, and having kids. There's no way I could afford to do any of that with my current income.The worst part is I don't even enjoy the work I'm doing currently, I just can't find a job at a more interesting firm. I'd gladly take even a $10k pay cut if it meant I loved coming in to work every day.
