Flags originally were made to serve a purpose but city flags are made to serve a city, essentially as a tool for marketing. Maybe in some limited port cities would a flag have had an actual use but even then it's not really necessary. The purpose of old world city flags that are really just crests is that they preserve the heraldry and feudal history of an area. You can see them hanging from a castle and see what purpose they would've served back when the world was a lot smaller and flags served a more martial purpose. Having a flag for a city now, especially for just legally incorporate cities that are part of a larger Metropolitan area, or which are entirely remove towns, it just feels detached from their purpose. Vexilogical reddit just made it worse by making it so everyone needs a flag and it has to be follow these style guides.
