Sure historians make educated guesses (with vastly different quality) but we will never be sure how a structure looked past a certain date.Some modern (i.e. 19th century) reconstructions are really not that good. Pic not related as the Imperial Castle in Nürnberg got extensively photographed and surveyed before WW2 started.
