It's not that it's not useful, it all goes into the supply chain. It's just Africa-tier. You don't have the apparatus for complex manufacturing and resort to exploiting natural wealth instead. It's fine, but when another country finds some mineral or finally bribes enough of the Government to produce it themselves you'll be shit out of luck. It's not a good way to run an economy

Unlikely it’ll happen, it actually takes stability and decent equipment to set up a resource extraction economy like australias. Even if you buy the equipment, the world is getting more unstable not stable.

It's really not that unlikely it just goes in cycles. Venezuela was on track to become one of the largest petroleum exporters in the world not long ago. Serbia found a huge lithium reserve recently and an Australian company wouldn't to come in a buy rights (caused a huge shit storm and didn't fully go through). Some African country I forget just said they found the hugest proven gold reserve ever. Russia manages okay with all their extraction projects.
>more unstable not stable.
This is what you have going for your country. If other governments can get it together long enough to get the relatively cheap equipment, some competent engineers and personnel a lot of that mining you're benefiting from goes away. It's a big "if" but it does happen from time to time. Also let's not pretend like resource extraction is anywhere as complicated as lithography, auto manufacturing, or any complex manufacturing task. It's not a personal attack I just don't think it's wise to base a 1st world economy on resource extraction. I get why shit holes do it, they are just trying to get out of the stone age.
>>
>>221362703
It’s just not easy to keep up a large complex manufacturing economy when you can make a quick, consistent buck from selling resources for a small country. Denmark does the same. Unless you find a niche competing with larger countries for manufacturing is a fools errand.
>>
>>221361225
gdp
>>
>>221362703
Also to add on. I fucking wish Serbia could get it's shit together and start complex resource extraction operations together domestically. Right now the only thing the country does competently is mine coal. It's a core part of national security for energy independence. And then sells the mining rights to other minerals to other countries in various corrupt ways until it becomes unprofitable and they fuck off. If we could get domestic mining up to an even passable level it would catipult the country ahead quite a bit. But it's a small country, really apples and oranges compared to aus.
>>221362845
Understandable. It's not working very well here, for a myriad of reasons. Yugoslavia was making a lot of consumer goods for both export and domestic market. Although that was a different time with different conditions. Theoretically it could happen again but it probably won't

Do the rest of the ex-Yugoslavs have easy shit to sell?

The mid-late twentieth century was a different time period entirely. Even in the last decade the company I’ve been at went from almost exclusively importing advanced European equipment to now Chinese products that are mostly the same but are a lot cheaper and you get other benefits (they often are willing to send a techie from there to fix the equipment if it breaks down as a warranty thing). Microchips are where it’s at, but how many countries can and will start making them.

>Do the rest of the ex-Yugoslavs have easy shit to sell
Not particularly. Realistically serbia has the most manufacturing for export but that's mostly munitions (and that never really recovered fully after US bombing) and rubber products. And it's not much. Most of ex-yu is struggling to maintain a livable economy. Although most are food positive so that's good.
>>221363021
>The mid-late twentieth century was a different time period entirely
Yeah of course. The barrier to entry was much lower in all respects. It was less complicated to produce things
>to now Chinese products that are mostly the same but are a lot cheaper
China has came a long way. Chinese stuff used to be synonymous with shit QC and bad quality, but they've been very competitive lately with a lot of difficult-to-produce products. And honestly I think a lot of other European and American manufacturing quality has went down too, also closing the gap
>Microchips are where it’s at, but how many countries can and will start making them.
I agree but one of the most competitive things in the world right now. Probably the highest barrier to entry. Transistors are so small, barely anyone knows how to make the machines to make them that small. Even fewer can actually get everything together to do it correctly. China may eventually get it right.
As you said in the mid to late 20th century was a different time. Did you know even Russia was making circuit boards and chips domestically at one point? It was mostly for domestic and military use. They could never do the same today in a modern way

The US doesn't focus on exports they make their own industrial equipment, also that would violate most tenants of liberalism if a developed country started to corner production (note this doesn't apply to services). The way economists got around that was by labelling all of the export economies as 'developing' so they're allowed to overproduce and sell to countries that don't have a manufacturing base.
