>It was in the 1730s that an important step towards a free press was established in the American colonies. New York since its annexation from the Dutch in the previous century had remained a firmly aristocratic colony where no pretense of political enfranchisement for the commoners existed. In 1735, the current governor, William Cosby, sued the newspaper New York Weekly Journal, founded by a German immigrant named John Zenger, which frequently ridiculed him and portrayed him as a corrupt tyrant, for libel. A jury ruled that although the Journal was indeed guilty of publishing slanderous claims about the governor, the anti-libel law was injust and tyrannous therefore Zenger was not guilty.

>The ruling, an early use of jury nullification, helped establish freedom of the press as a precedent, even though true freedom of speech would not exist until after US independence.

>In 1736, Benjamin Franklin created the Union Fire Company, one of the first volunteer firefighting companies in America. In the same year, he printed a new currency for New Jersey based on innovative anti-counterfeiting techniques he had devised. His political career also commenced, particularly as the Chief Clerk of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly, a capacity wherein he served until 1751.[72] Throughout his career, he was an advocate for paper money, publishing A Modest Enquiry into the Nature and Necessity of a Paper Currency in 1729, and his printer printed money. He was influential in the more restrained and thus successful monetary experiments in the Middle Colonies, which stopped deflation without causing excessive inflation.

Live is finally good in our duchy since the French have ceased their invasions and the conflict between the Wittelsbacher and the Hohenzollern had calmed down. The good Prince Jan Wellem built up our lands here but his successor and younger brother Karl is far more demanding - luckily he left for Mannheim and now the officials of his brother can continue their good rule. The orchards are fruitful, the mines plentyful, the lakes carry fish, the meadows provide for our cattle and the rivers drive our hammerworks and smithies. Only something really stupid, like a war in the east that would envolve the Greats of the realm (like Prussia, Austria, Hannover, Hesse and Saxony) and their allies and foes (like France, England, Spain, Sweden and Russia) all over Europe, would threaten our tranquil state.
