Have you ever read the Bible from cover to cover? iyc
>>
>>221442561
No, just Genesis, Numbers, and Exodus. The other two books are legalistic nonsense that I imagine is only of interest to people who actually reside in a religious community. There's entire portions of Leviticus that just list off things that are and are not kosher, like not wearing two types of fabric at the same time.
>>
Old Testament: only twice
New Testament: several times
>>
>>221442880
Why?
>>
>>221443020
The relevant stuff is in the second half, innit.
>>
No, tried it once, stopped at genesis with God telling Abraham to kill his newborn. That shit is so absurd it made an atheist
>>
>>221442561
I have read the bible, not that I care much, the Jewish version (Old Testament) is somewhat better, they do say to kill Jesus
>>
for my it's luke
>>
>>221442561
Yes
I've always been fascinated by religion

Revelations for me

From NT most of the books recently. There are many movies about the 4 gospels. Revelations is too weird and absurd to make a movie out from. Are there any movies about Paul and his work?

From OT I have read the first half of Genesis and watched the Exodus movie. Maybe I will read some prophets who have seen weird angels and visions.
>>
>>221444406
Revelations is the most bizzare book in the NT. It is also the first holy book I have read and I reread it once in a while. I feel shivers every time I imagine the events taking place.
>>
I read the gospels and they were interesting and then I got to Acts, got bored and dropped it. Paul is a shit protag

The Old Testament is a lot more fun and varied. New Testament is boring hippie shit.
>>
>>221442561
I stopped at the first contradiction.
>>
>>221442561
Yes, several times when I was younger.
>>
>>221442561
Yes, but only the second time.
The first time I skipped the boring parts and asked gpt for a summary
>>
>>221445402
>Revelations is too weird and absurd to make a movie out from
Not if you interpret it as a metaphor, which was likely the intention >>221445455
Yes that's why I like it
>>
i powered through the pentateuch (mostly skimming leviticus and deuteronomy) and then got bored. I probably shouldn't have tried reading it in order desu
>>
>>221445402
>Are there any movies about Paul and his work?
Paul, Apostle of Christ
>>221445455
>>221446240
Revelation is the big crossover climax episode where all the crazy shit goes down. You can’t really understand it unless you’ve read the rest of the bible
>>
>>221442561
I was laughing my ass off reading the OT during the Lot story, a literal LGBTQ+ gay crowd trying to actually rape literal angels (also why I know biblically accurate angels is a retarded meme, they looked human and at most were described metaphorically "non-human", at least in that instance) and Lot literally trying to hold the door of his home where he hid the Angels from being broken by the raging homosexuals. Smiled from ear to ear when they got nuclear annihilated by a meteorite from God.

Also the story about Esau and his brother, when his brother comes back from exile in Mesopotamia to Esau and asks for forgiveness by literally kneeling a bazillion times while walking towards him and also sending gifs of goats and other shit. This with stories like Abraham hiding in Egypt as his wife's brother so he wouldn't get whacked by bandits made me understand more the jewish soul and how different it is from the heroic Indoeuropean myths.

There's a massive jump in quality from the old testament to the new testament. The old testament has some gems, but a lot of the Saul/David shit is shonen tier and the census information in Numbers is just boring.
>>
>>221446374
>You can’t really understand it unless you’ve read the rest of the bible
Yes but that goes for everything.

You can't understand Jesus's sacrifice if you don't get the context
>>
>>221447108
>This with stories like Abraham hiding in Egypt as his wife's brother
Sarah was actually his half-sister. And wife
>made me understand more the jewish soul and how different it is from the heroic Indoeuropean myths.
I've noticed that as well
>>
>>221447300
It's certainly a contrast with the Homeric tales more than anything, on the other hand you can find Odin being a trickster with the giants in the Eddas. And Arjuna in the the Bhagavad Gita comes out as very human, filled with fear and moral uncertainty before a battle, having to be reassured by Krishna.
>>
>>221442561
No I typically read nonfiction.
>>
>>221445622
I am a Christian, but apart from the sermon on the mount, I don't think there are any other hippie moments in there.
>>
>>221442561
Yep, but it's a long book with a huge amount of cross references and further looking up to do so it takes time.

That said, I've re-read parts of the Bible often (daily devotionals will get you there fast).

Currently rereading Ecclesiastes and Proverbs. It's insane how badly the quran reads compared to the Bible.
>>
>>221445622
>New Testament is boring hippie shit.
Pretty wrong.

>>221445402
Romans is a beautiful book and you could probably read it in Greek, so fairly close to the original Koiné Greek.

The minor prophetic books of the OT (e.g: sophonias) are also great, though none reach the level of Ecclesiastes and Proverbs (truly beautiful books).
>>
>>221445691
But enough about the quran
>>
>>221447108
>also why I know biblically accurate angels is a retarded meme, they looked human and at most were described metaphorically "non-human", at least in that instance
If you knew Christianity, you'd know there are different kinds of angels. You have the humanlike ones all the way to bizarre wheel-like ones.
>>
I started with the old testament but when it wasn't boring it was just schizo ramblings that I can't imagine anyone believing in earnest
>>
>>221448133
Old Testament has the funniest stories
>>
>>221442561
I've read the entire old testament
>>
>>221448094
Yeah I know that, retard. I know christianity, I have read the Bible, I literally did Catechesis for years as a kid. Holy fuck I really can't stand other spanish posters, what is wrong with you people?
>>
>>221442561
yep. In a KJV facsimile, too.

It was laughably shit. Makes you sad to think how dumb all religion is. This is what's kept hundreds of millions of people going for centuries - total fucking rot.
>>
>>221442561
I've read up to 2 Chronicles in the KJV, and have read the New Testament in NJRVue but then got distracted by other Christian texts and books, I need to go back and read the Nevi'im and Ketuvim.

>NJRVue
NRSVue, no idea why I typed that. It's slightly pozzed because it translates man into people and stays away from mentioning homosexuality, but overall it's good and provides footnotes with alternate meanings.

Book of Revelation is nicely schizo. Weird it was left in.
>>
I have crippling ADHD and can barely get a few pages into a book. Tried audio books but my brain is retarded. Shit sucks.
>>
>>221447108
>also why I know biblically accurate angels is a retarded meme
It's not retarded, just overused. Yes, an average angel was usually an ambigious, presumably human looking being, perhaps with an otherworldly aura about him, but the the higher tier freaky many-winged multi-headed chimeras are a thing too.
What is definitely not biblically accurate is their most common depiction of a young man/chubby baby, with a pair of wings on his back, which is just assimilated Eros/Cupid.
>>
>>221442561
No, only genesis and exodus. It was interesting in a lot of ways, but I just can't stand how blatantly evil some of the chosen people are.

Recently I wondered if jerking off being a sin is not the Church's misinterpretation of the scripture.
YHWH killed Onan for pulling out his dick during sex at the last moment and cooming on the ground instead of impregnating his wife, but the way that text reads implies it wasn't the waste of sperm per se that enraged YHWH, but the fact that Onan was obliged to marry her and give her a baby, because she was his dead brother's widow, and the old Jewish law stated every man is obliged to marry his dead brother's widow and have babies with her.
I'm assuming it's because widows were generally avoided and their late husbands brothers were their only shot at motherhood or something? Dunno
But that text feels weird, like there's some missing ancient context.
>>
>>221448083
said is also applicable to quran.
>>
>>221453354
Okay, I've just read up it was (is?) a thing, it's called levirate marriage, and Onan wouldn't impregnate the widow because then his kids would count as his brother's. Ancient Jews were such petty weirdos lmao
So the question is if YHWH cared about sperm at all. If Onan actually impregnated the widow and jerked off aside from that, would he be punished? We may never know
>>
>>221453439
From the passage alone, it's hard to say for sure, but the traditional interpretation is that Onan's actions were a violation of natural law, not just a violation of an obligation to his brother. Remember that this is in Genesis before the law of Moses, so the obligation to marry your widowed sister-in-law and have children was only Judah's orders, not a divine commandment. Is there always a moral obligation (even today) to marry your brother's widow? If not, it was only a human commandment. Following that line of reasoning, it seems strange that God struck Onan down if there wasn't something greatly evil in his sight if there wasn't something about the act of "spilling his seed" to avoid having children as such.
>>
>>221442561
I tried, but dropped when they were talking about how long people would live from that point forward. It was just too silly.
>>
>>221455189
Some weird names that appear once. People would live 900, 800, 700, 600 hundred years. It's strange. I interpret it as 'man was meant to have a longer lifespan but sinning reduced it through generations'

I stopped by the time it was several pages of god describing to moses how the sacrificial altar was supposed to look

I was told that it was a mistranslation and that it wasn't years, but lunar cycles... which fits fairly well
