He wrote about how suffering, while shit, could give life meaning. That we could find redemption with faith and love. He himself lived a shit life as a destitute gambler and treated his first wife badly. He faced a mock execution and lived as a bottom tier loser after getting rejected from the Russian literacy scene. But he overcame his demons through faith. When he died, he was widely regarded as one of Russia's greatest authors and received a state funeral. He told his children the parable of prodigal son on his deathbed because his life mirrored the son who rebelled.
