Are French people north European or Southern European?

Provence is closer to Italy, Gascony to Spain, Alsace to Germany, Flanders to England, but all of these are closer to each other than any of the neighboring countries.If you're so desperate for category, it wouldn't be wrong to say we're latins. Our culture descends mostly from Roman culture, same as Italians and Spaniards, and I think we share more traits with them than we do with Germans, but they are all still strangers.
