That's mostly a class issue. The Puerto Rican side of my family were all dirt poor peasants for generations until they came to the mainland in the 1950s to make a better life for themselves. Now my dad swears we're mainly descended from Spanish aristocracy and pretends to read Neruda and shit while my uncle is indistinguishable from an NYC Italian and my aunt married some WASP guy with brown fever. My generation is fully assimilated.
