In 2014, when Russia took over Crimea, many Ukrainian army units were both surprised and pro-Russian. Some of them ended up switching sides. That's probably why Russia thought they could invade all of Ukraine and that it would be just as easy. Of course, taking Crimea poisoned relations far worse than they imagined.

Then again that's just my opinion, I'm just a finn, take it with a grain of salt etc.
