I feel really sad for Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina for making part of Brazil. Like, we are first world countries inside of an enormous India. We've tried gaining independence but nothing worked. I feel miserable, I wish that I lived in a first world country.

You often heard about how Anglos treated badly Italian immigrants in the US, Australia and Canada and how they were so mean to them. In reverse, people often imagine that Italians who immigrated to Brazil and Argentina were warmly welcomed by fellow latin catholics. Welp, nothing could be further from the truth.
In the late 19th and early 20th century, hundreds of thousands of Italian immigrants, possibly up to a million, were working as indentured servants in Brazilian farms. For a little context, slavery was just abolished in Brazil and the landlords needed a new source of cheap labor, and they found it with immigration. Many Italians were "scammed" with sponsored immigration that sent them right into indentured servited. Italy at the time very poor and many viewed south america as a land of riches. However, when the settlers arrived at the farms, they found terrible living conditions, isolated from urban centers, with no medical care, no school for their children, small houses and no minimum hygiene conditions. While working in the fields, the foremen watched over the settlers throughout the day and the abuse involved physical violence, even the use of whips. They also controlled their family and social activities. The settlers were unable to obtain legal protection against these abuses by the farmers, who also exploited them economically, imposing penalties for frivolous reasons, confiscating their produce and falsifying weights and measures, as well as withholding their wages.
The situation got so bad that the Italian government had to act. In 1902, the Prinetti decree prohibited sponsored immigration to Brazil. From then on it significantly reduced, but only completely stopped in the 1920s.
