It was the only 5th Gen fighter. the Gripen was a 4th Gen fighter with an upgrade package. The contract and competition didn't take into account what will happen in 50 years (6th Gen fighter) but maybe it should've? But we've been always buying from everyone, first MiG, then Draken then F-18 (and british Hawks for training) better luck next time!

We're buying 24 brand new F-16s instead, truth to be told, mostly because we couldn't afford the Rafales, but it was a pretty good deal we were offered (down from 3.5 billion for 12, to just 1.5b), plus other stuff they threw in to sweeten the deal (an air refueling plane, a drone factory, integration of 2 new weapons systems just for us). Now we're looking to buy some AWACS.
