North Dakota has the most extreme climate in the US, as defined by temperature variance and frequency of adverse weather events (blizzards, tornadoes, floods, etc.). North Dakota's highest temperature is 121F/49.5C, which is a temperature more commonly found in desert regions. However, its low temperature is -60F/-51C, which is similar to Arctic regions.

Alaska gets colder, but not nearly as hot. The southwest gets hotter, but not nearly as cold. North Dakota has both.
