For whatever reason westoids can't handle multilingualism. It takes just one little assimilation regime and they just drop dead, like the Irish or various groups in France. In Eastern Europe you have like multiple Imperial regimes over the centuries in one region, people learning the official languages for pragmatic reasons but still keeping their own native one. I think over the centuries people learned compartmentalize "official language" from "own real language". Also here minorities like Hungarians and other groups are literally never going to have Romanian as their mother tongue and it would be fucking weird if they did. And, I'm not seething about France, just observing things.
