>>221627984I'm Melungeon.
>>221628901awesome, do you live in nc? what do most people assume your race/ethnicity is when they first meet you?
>>221628955I live in Kansas. I'm (Lakeminite I think it's called?) diaspora. I have a lot of family from the NC and Franklin regions though. Are you related to Saponis?
>>221628975cool, virtually my entire paternal side of the family is from/lived in robeson county. as for saponi relation idk, my surname is a very common lumbee surname and some saponis share it but i don't know if i have any relation otherwise. my mom's paternal side is from kansas as well, seems a lot of people from kansas come here. but she's not lumbee. have you been to nc before?
>>221629235>have you been to nc before? No, but my dad went a lot when he was a kid.If you don't mind me asking, what's your surname?Locklear is a common last name shared between the Melungeon and Lumbee communities. My family comes from the Rives/Reaves/Reeves clan of Melungeons. And for your earlier question regarding race, I get Jewish, Italian, Mexican and Hapa a lot.Are you enrolled as Lumbee?
I’m Korean but of American citizenship but I don’t engage in racebait idolatry. I’m just here to contribute to Palantir Data Centers, lol
>>221629301i'm an oxendine, but i believe i have chavis relations as welli'm not currently enrolled but my dad is. i plan on enrolling whenever they open enrollment againeven among other lumbees most people are shocked to hear that i'm lumbee but i guess that makes sense considering my mom is white, though sometimes people will also guess that i'm part east asiani would say locklear and lowry make up nearly the majority of lumbees. i had a class in high school with a locklear but i don't think there's any locklears in my family personally
>>221629553Similar. My mom is full white too. My older sister is blonde, fair-skinned and blue-eye so no one ever thinks of her as anything other than white. I look the most mixed in my siblings. Melungeon men tend to appear more mixed whereas Melungeon women tend to look more just white.Does phenotype vary much in Lumbee siblings?
>>221629709i also have a sister but she looks mostly alike to me with the exception of her having lighter green eyes, although we are both women and i don't have a brother to offer a fair comparison. i do notice however a lot of lumbee look greatly different from one another, even ones apart of the same family, and the women also tend to look whiter or at least have fairer skin.do you live around a lot of other melungeon?
>>221629855>do you live around a lot of other melungeon? Not as far as I'm aware. A lot of Melungeons intentionally tried to disperse themselves into the white population to avoid racism so there might be more who just don't know. Even the Lakeminate sub community that my family technically part of is primary centered in Michigan which is miles away. It's difficult because you first have to piece together that you are Melungeon from genealogy and then you have to scrutinize old history books and texts to learn more about the culture. I'd like to go a MHA meetup in Virginia one day. With Lumbees it's easier since you just a tribal organization that can fund classes for their community on the heritage and culture. Are Lumbees restricting enrollment now? I heard Lumbees were pretty open with getting new members in. I'd reckoned they'd just take you automatically once they knew your dad was one.
>>221629975yea, they've closed enrollment at the moment and afaik it's been closed for a bit now. from what i've heard once you're over the age of 18, the enrollment process is different and you won't be able to be automatically enrolled. i never enrolled when i was underaged so i missed out how did you discover you were melungeon if you don't mind me asking? was it through your family or did you come to find out on your own?
>>221630094I had to find out on my own. Most older Melungeons would not appreciate being called Melungeon or identifying as such since it's technically a slur in Appalachian circles. My grandmother said she was just Scottish/Cherokee, I had to trace geneaological records to find her African ancestors, which I don't think she knew she had. She married into a Mormon family, and Mormonism has a lot of racial baggage so I suspect she might've been trying to distance herself from her background. (my dad was ex-mo so I was never Mormon myself)But the Mormons are also great geneaologists so I guess there was an upside to that. She died before I knew about all this so I can't ask her directly. Did you always know you were Lumbee or was it something your dad's family just dropped on you one day?
>>221627984using 'stock' to refer to lineage always just makes me think of cattle or some other domesticated animal
