The small Pacific Island nation of Nauru has formally changed its name to Naoero, matching the local pronunciation and dropping the colonial era name.

PLEASE take care not to deadname them from now on

Who cares about what a tiny irrelevant island thinks?

Just because 90% of its GDP comes from hosting an Australian concentration camp doesn't mean it's irrelevant.

there isnt a less relevant island than yours in the world. What is it even like, living on a mossy rock in the middle of the ocean eating potatoes and porpoises ? What sort of music radio stations do you have lol

I've never understood these name changes. Why is it a big deal if it's Turkey or Türkiye in english, it's still Turkki imc. Belarus is another, they want people to call them Belarus, instead of White russia (common in non english languages) but Belarus just means White russia in russian. IDGI.

Ü isn't a letter in the English alphabet and Turkiye isn't pronounceable in English either.
Turks can make whatever demands they want. I'll only respect name changes if they're pronounceable and use real letters, at least the Czechs managed that much when they changed their English name to Czechia.

I don't know. It's like, do you want us to call you Suomi or is Finland alright? Germany doesn't make us call them Deutschland. Its unclear to me as well why some countries insist we use their native name. Iran is another one, it used to be called Persia. Or Myanmar. Used to be Burma.

And how is that pronounced differently? I guess more like Nauro rather than Nauru?
