Thinking about Ubisoft made me reflect on my own game development history. Back in the day, I made around 4-5 games — none of them particularly groundbreaking: a chess game, an Asteroids clone for Android, a "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire"-style quiz app, an Android tile-matching game, and a history of Bulgaria trivia map. Objectively, they were pretty rough around the edges.And yet — I've shipped more games this decade (2020–2026) than Ubisoft has, in a fraction of the time, as a single person. Ubisoft, for context, employs somewhere between 16,600 and 17,500 people across 40+ studios worldwide.I do know someone who works there, so I'm not completely ignorant of the effort going in — but the output simply hasn't been financially viable.Here's the thing: even today, a smarter strategy might be embarrassingly simple. Take Android, clone the Vampire Survivors formula, add a unique gimmick, slap some ads on it — done. That alone would likely outperform Ubisoft's recent ROI. The real creative challenge is just the gimmick itself. Everything else? Prompt an AI agent to help you pick an engine, raid relevant open source projects for code, get a working MVP built, study it, and then implement your differentiator. That's genuinely it.Just make it free or like 5 euro and put ads in it. that is it.
