There was a Portuguese anon here who studied both French and German. The question is, which one is more difficult? I'm guessing it's German in terms of vocabulary, since French is a Romance language, but I'm not sure about grammar. German has cases, yes, but only four, and practically three, and uses operators like in English which are more easier to grasp

>>222483805One last simple question, Serbbro. If I prove it that I am serious this time... Can I clean my record here?If I do really learn a language and speak it, I mean.Answer honestly. Has it reached the point that I am not welcome here even if I do learn a language?
>>222483843No. In a just world you'd be hanged and made an example of.
>>222483869Alright then. I can't complain, since I have no one to blame for how I am perceived here except for myself. I take responsibility for that.I guess I'll see my way out.Goodbye!
>>222483652Yes German grammar is harder. French conjugations almost all sound the same
>>222483933See you tomorrow
>>222483994I'm struggling with French right now, especially with speech comprehension. German was slower in learning and constructing sentences, but it was clearer. And English doesn't help me with vocabulary at all; it just makes me lag. But maybe my English is not good enough. Or maybe I'm too old for very demanding languages
>>222484775Yeah I definitely struggle more with German speech comprehension. I was just watching a video and I had to keep rewinding constantly. The phonetics of the language definitely sound more like English but idk, I can't process it as quickly as French.
Why are almost all comprehensible input creators women?
>>222487338No one wants to watch/listen to a dude when they can watch/listen to a cute girl
>>222487338At least part of it is the fact women are more into LearninG foreign languages than men (at least in the anglosphere), but that doesn't account for all of the discrepancy.Another part of it might be that women are just more comfortable putting videos with their face in it or talking about their daily lives out there online as a facet of gendered social media culture.Another factor is probably that it is easier to build an audience as an average or above average looking woman than for the equivalent man.
>>222487338Podcast Italiano is a dude
>>222487338It's basically because white women are a lot of the viewers and have a strong in-gender bias and don't want to watch malesEnglish CI meanwhile is completely unironically overwhelmingly attractive white men creators with asian female viewershttps://youtu.be/q2jiv5mXW4M?si=doscTb-IwvzuV27l
>>222489143It's surprising that people can make a living off making comprehensible input videos for English. I figured there's so much English content out there already that it'd be pretty useless. I guess there's less content for British English though, and maybe people want to learn that over American.
Is it possible to develop a good French accent, or is it impossible after a certain age? Of course, understanding where a word begins and ends in a sentence would also be helpful. Italian and even Portuguese seem much easier to understand, so how on earth has French become so successful? Or maybe I’m just too slow, I don’t know
How come german mostly lost case endings on nouns, but not on articles/determiners/adjectives?

>>222499939it's not racist or a stereotype if it's true with credible documentation. it's true btw.
>>222496813The differences in difficulty between these languages are so small as to be compeltely trivial. The only reason German is in FSI Category 2 is because of the case system, so it's unclear if that will even make much of a difference if you're a native Polish speaker. Just pick the ones you're actually interested in. I'm not one of those people who thinks you should pick the language you want to learn based on pure pre-rational introspection, but if you're the type of person who goes "Well, I was going to learn French, but I guess I'll learn Italian because the language is marginally easier..." then you're probably never going to learn it to a high level. Let's say Italian takes 600 hours to reach basic fluency, and French 700 hours (<- these numbers are completely made up). If you like French more and are therefore only motivated to study Italian for 50 mins a day and French for 1 hour 10 minutes a day, then you'll learn French around 20% faster than Italian despite it being more difficult.Similarly, I don't think it's always a bad idea to learn two languages at the same time, but you shouldn't be in the beginner stage of two languages at the same time. Pick one and then get to the point where you can regularly consume native content, then decide if you want to learn another.

I learned a Scandinavian language, and a little content helped, but I have this problem: I try to do everything myself and I don't know if I'm making any terrible mistakes or if I'm even speaking clearly. I'll be honest, I'm thinking about going abroad for work for six months or something. Therefore, I'm considering Dutch or German as alternatives. Is learning German even worth it at this point? Should I focus on learning languages which have more future potential like Chinese?
Fuck. Language learning without anki is like running a marathon without legs. I never should have stopped using it.
>>222513061Just read more, Portie. It's the same shit just infinitely less tedious.
>>222513134Read? You mean books?
>>222513407Just text of any kind. Comics, manga, newspapers, magazines, even tweets... every time you read a sentence, you're not just picking up new words, but reviewing ones you already know in a meaningful context. It's easy reps.
>>222513514But how is reading better than watching content for getting exposure to words? I still encounter new words when I watch series, it's just that I don't see the same word again for months, or even more than a year, which is why I think I should be using anki again.

Of course there are wealthy people in those countries, but you'll be competing with other online English teachers for them.China is probably your best bet. Maybe you've shared it before but it's hard to keep track of which flags are learning what.>Mandarin Chinese>Half way through my hsk5 (~b1) anki deck, but am only really focusing on listening comprehension and ignoring the other 3 skills.
>>222513980Books don't help with listening comprehension though. Also, I just enjoy watching films/series more than reading books. But it seems to me like the real issue is that whenever I switch genres, I realize I've forgotten a lot of words related to that genre, which is why I think I should be using anki again. Maybe if I read a fantasy book, then a science fiction book, and continued cycling through genres every month, then I could avoid that problem, but for me I think anki is a simpler solution.
>>222488267indeed i want to watch women, not men, but i also i don't want to speak the language like a woman. big dilemma.
>>222521997That's the reason I was thinking about it; I saw some British guy who speaks Chinese with a really good accent and all the Chinese people were like "Yeah, but he sounds gay because he talks like a woman". I think that's probably an extreme example and it's fine to consume mostly women for beginner material as long as you don't also disproportionately listen to women once you switch to native content. The main reason female CI creators suck is because all of their beginner videos are stuff like "Guess The Disney princess" and half their intermediate videos are about relationships (the former is part of a wider trend of CI creators apparently thinking they have to talk about childish content just because they're using the vocabulary of a child). I don't know why any man would want to watch this. Are people really gooning to Lazy Chinese?
>>222519735They just don't get good in (at?) any language I guess>>222521997These CI guys often sound like women anyway. Not all of them, but there is this specific kind of voice, I can't define it >>222513061I use Anki to learn bird colors and voices
Learning Polish. Is Duolingo generally an okay platform to learn languages? It's teaching me some things that are unnecessary according to Poles, but I suppose it's basically teaching me from the dictionary, people just speak differently.I mean, it's working, I'm learning words, but this is my first time opening this thread I'm seeing people talk about anki, am I being too normie by using duolingo? Thanks in advance
>>222523764it could be good for the first few days to get exposure to the language but duolingo is not viewed as an ok platform to learn languages (on it's own). i used it years ago before it got steadily more enshittified and it was 'ok' by that time's standards. you should, after getting all the euphoria for polish out of your system, find a book for learning polish that you like; and you would benefit greatly from making flashcards, real or digital. (if you do like duolingo then just don't use it by itself is the tl;dr.)
>>222524357Thanks mate. I did search anna's-archive for a book last time when I was waiting for a flight I'll have to have another look and actually pay for one I think. Thanks again
>>222523764>>222524492If one intelligently and diligently uses duolingo specifically as a vocabulary builder and reading drill app it’s actually quite good, the problem is that the app itself by its nature discourages focus and the encourages rushing through things. If someone was plugging an hour into duolingo a day of solid effort, reading the sentences aloud, saying their answer aloud before looking at the word clouds, and putting the key phrases from each unit down somewhere (like flashcards) for review, then a duolingo course can potentially be excellent. Most people just do 2-10 minutes a day lazily and not paying attention though so they never progress.
>>222517839Perhaps he should either didicate himself to one language to truly master as his second language (assuming english isn't his second language already) or just embrace the fact that language is sometimes just a hobby. Gloating that he tried to learn something new?
>>222524623 Yeah, makes sense. I thought the same pretty early on. I noticed myself rushing and just clicking the answers rather than taking in what it was saying or practising my pronunciation, hence my question. I'll still use it for vocabulary and lessons but won't use it as my main learning point until I find some literature or something.
>>222523764>Is Duolingo generally an okay platform to learn languages? No. It’s a complete and total waste of your time. You’ll be drilling “I eat cake” foe 100 hours before you learn what past tense even is. If you really want an app, get Memrise. It’s just a fancy pre-made Anki app and it’s got basically every language you could want. Use something like that for beginner vocab and watch some beginner videos/read one of the OP textbooks to make sense of grammatical structures. Literally anything is better than Duolingo, not because it’s methods are bad but because it completely disrespects your time and actively wastes if with stupid bullshit unrelated to the language and then drags out everything.

How can I learn European Spanish instead of Latin-American Spanish? I am bilingual in English and Spanish, however, my spoken and written Spanish are 'okay' and not nearly as developed as my reading and listening/comprehension abilities.I have decided to get lock-in and get a CEFR certificate for my language abilities, and am certain that the exam is based on European Spanish (Castellano) rather than Latin-American spanish - that and I hate my spic side of my family and do want to sound like a gorilla by speaking latino rather than castilian. Are there any particular resources or methods that I should use to study/improve a language that I am already highly familiar with?
>>222524623Wouldn't it be better to extract the content and learn that way? There used to be something called DuoItalian, where the entire course was practically on the website. Duolingo also displays the information in a strange order, from what I remember.
>>222526106Yeah it has a lot of oddities. What you’re describing is essentially just a big anki deck. The main issue with anki is that SRS is for memorizing information in as few reps as possible, which doesn’t produce fluent usage, while duolingo essentially allows over learning because of how much volume you get per word and sentence pattern. The anki of the key phrases is there so you have a way to keep a connection with all the drilling volume. It’s the same reason why someone who does pimsleur and does anki of all 1500 of the key phrases will be a way more fluent speaker within the curriculum than someone who just did 1500 anki sentence cards. One got 75-150 hours of speaking therapy plus some anki, the other one just got anki. This gap is why so many people can read high literature in classical languages but can’t talk at all. It’s also why audiolingual courses like FSI that aim to produce fluency as early as possible are so oriented towards drilling. A lot of textbooks from the 60s-70s are like this too. Defrancis’s chinese series is a great example. You may drill a sentence pattern 50 times in the main english-pinyin lesson, drill it 50 again in the hanzi-only volume, and then encounter the same pattern another 50 times in the reader, all of which has accompanying audio. It’s incredibly tedious but when I hadn’t decided on what language to pursue I tried it for Chinese for a month and still remember and can even actively use the bulk of what I learned despite doing it over 2 years ago and not touching Chinese since. I only even put 1-2 hours in a day.The above is the same principle behind how Alexander Arguelles used assimil books.I went with a friend to Japan once who had done 2.5 levels of pimsleur over a few months, and what Japanese they did know was extremely limited in scope, but they were able to carry on conversations where other friends who had studied for years were afraid to speak in public.
>>222521857It actually helps with listening because a major obstacle is comprehension speed, not just perceiving specific sounds etc. When you practice reading with a certain flow and speed, one word after the other without pausing to think/remember, that also usually translates decently well to listening comprehension. The way I think about it is you start out with no understanding, then with lookups/translation or Anki you reach a slow understanding, then you work towards a fast and automatic understanding. Listening comprehension requires that fast/automatic understanding, which you can build through reading as well if you do it the right way.I'm not sure if you've noticed, but there's a qualitative difference between knowing that TL word roughly maps to NL word vs. having a certain "feel" for what a word means, that's more implicit and contextual. Going from slow to fast understanding is going from that mapping TL->NL to the "feel" through enough exposure. Later you discard the mapping because it was just something you used to get to the "real" knowledge. Not saying you should stop watching tv shows, just saying you shouldn't neglect reading, especially if you feel like you're plateauing. With German, I went through a lot of graded readers for the sake of practice, it's not just about new words, but practicing putting everything together. If it's boring, just imagine that reading one page is like reviewing 300 word flashcards in context. If you read 5 pages, you're already doing 5 times the usual Anki drone workload with much less effort.

You still want to supplement it with some kinda grammar guide and outside material. If I want to learn French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, what's the best order to start? I was thinking Italian or Portuguese. Italians understand Spanish better than the other way around, and the same goes for Portuguese. French is the odd one out anyway
>>222527396I've definitely noticed what you're talking about, but I've found that watching series has forced me to exercise the comprehension speed muscle more than reading. And that has definitely helped me a lot with that subconscious understanding that you're talking about. What throws me off is usually an unknown word, or for whatever reason, some connected speech with words that I know. Those are just my reasons for my current strategy, but ultimately I know you're right and that neglecting reading is not ideal.
>>222529280Start with Spanish or French for maximum available content
>>222529481Spanish and French have so much more content?
>>222528063First time hearing about him definitely gave me a little entertainment.Imma ignore op and reply to the jordie.>>222508437What language are you studying currently or abandoned recently? I assume even if you stopped, you have some knowledge in it still. I wanna see what you are able to write in it.

>>222536917Hahahahaha holy shit. Can we get this guy abnend? It could be the first step in him becoming a productive member of society. Only 50% joking
>>222529280Start with French and Spanish. French first for Europeans, Spanish first for Americans. After that, Portuguese and Italian are basically side-quests. Their utility is so much less than French and Spanish that it doesn't really matter if they're easier.>>222529751Astronomically more.

>>222539250I prefer Euro Spanish though (and Brazilian Portuguese if that matter)
It's so fucking depressing how much time it takes to learn a language. I'm learning Spanish, which is literally as easy as it can possibly get for a native English speaker, and even at the rate of an hour a day it's still going to take well over two years to reach any real level of proficiency. And I have SEVERAL languages I'd like to learn before I die, some of them in requiring many thousands of hours of dedicated study.
>>222540370Skill issue.
>>222540370Yeah, I feel you. I regret that I started so late and that I didn't take foreign languages seriously in school.
>>222540370What's the rush anyway? You're probably in your 20s, you have your whole life ahead of you, champ, just keep at it.
>>222540477Me too. I could have gotten into this as a teenager and who knows how far along I'd be by now.>>222540483I'm already 30. By the time I have a few languages under my belt life will already have basically passed me by. My one singular cope is that I'll still be able to read classic books in their original text even when I'm a wrinkled old man.
i gave a long time ago
>>222540152It's over.>>222540216Peninsular and American Spanish have superficial differences. You'll understand 100% of it regardless of which dialect you learn. Also I don't see a problem learning Brazilian Portuguese, it's probably more useful, but I can't comment personally on how it compares to Portugal's Portuguese.>>222540370I thought like this until I actually started learning Spanish. You can get to the point of having basic conversations within a few months. A mistake I made was thinking that you need to speak a language perfectly or you can't speak it at all, despite talking to Hispanics with broken English literally every day here in America and patiently piecing together what they need. Your Spanish might not be able to negotiate trade treaties with Panama, but you can 100% get to the point that you could go to any Spanish speaking country and survive with under a year of studying. Unless you're already in a place where fluent Spanish would help you, the main advantage of getting better is that you can input more interesting content.

>>222540578You are me from the States. I'm even an unc just like you. On the other hand, I remember my French teacher seething about France. Maybe Japanese/German in somewhere between those, depending on how my life goes. Unfortunately, I won't have enough life for more than that

>>222540370A bit of formal study complemented by switching all or at least most of your media consumption to Spanish should have those hours fly by.
