Why can't they be proud to be English? You can claim to be Irish, German, Mexican, Italian, Black, yellow, Neanderthal, no one bats an eye. But call an American "English" despite his cultural, linguistic, and genetic background largely coming from England or Great Britain and he'll correct you that he's in no way an Anglo.
