It just adds some politeness. verb +て+いる does.保険を持つ (or more normally 保険に入る(hairu) ) is like "I have insurance (in general, whenever it may be needed)"On the other hand, one of the functions of "verb +て+いる" is "being in the state of ...", like保険を持っている means "I have insurance (right now)." or "(I got insurance and) I'm insured."ている is rather complicated but in this case you can "roughly" think of it as present perfect..., I guess.

Also I need to learnt he difference between simple polite speak and full keigo, I still do not know enough of the different degrees of polite/casual speech. Thank you!
