there's something about days of researching months in advance and hours of travelling for a minute and a few seconds of total solar eclipse. it's probably that being in the right place at the right time, other than how spectacular the phenomenon can be. And how it will look in one of my many immaterial collections! Unlike mountains, which you can do potentially any day, eclipses are not negotiable. And so rareother than that, I had lotta fun explaining to people that i came "all the way" from Italy to see this eclipse, showing them my 9-year old astrosolar gear that survived the 2017 USA eclipse (everyone else had solar glasses with the CoA of Spain on them); I talked for a good half an hour with a really cute Palentina /out/ girl in my bit of Spanish mixed in with Italian, it was so fun. Worked so well that she gave me her instagram of her own will in front of her boyfriend

>>224180344>>224180738The cables were definitely the crux, I didn't bring the right gloves and shredded mine going up having zero grip so I was basically using the poles and the traction on my boots to pull myself up, which took so much out of me, I was barely able to pull myself up to the top. On the way down I borrowed a glove that actually worked from one of my hiking partners and was able to get down but slowly and I blistered my exposed hand pretty badly because my arms fell asleep and I was basically using the cables as rails to guide me down. Fortunately the cables were not nearly as crowded since we were up there so late in the day so I didn't feel pressured by holding people up or anything.It's one of the most 'dangerous' popular hikes in the country but thousands of people do it every week and only 11 people have died since the cables were established decades ago, with most of those deaths being a result of wet conditions which makes the slippery granite impossible to walk on

>>224188360Those are the ones you should bring, I didn't do my research and just used the same all-weather gloves that protected my hands while scrambling. They did not grip onto the cables at all. The via ferrata is completely unnecessary and just causes congestion on the cables. For the first time I didn't care about the heights either, i think it was just the adrenalin. I had no problem staring down the face on my way down, just wished I was already down thereI want to do Matterhorn Peak next (no, not *the* Matterhorn)
