your rockhounding trips to the Ore Mountains haven't made it into history because you didn't dump all the flags? sucks to be you lol edition

Previously on /flag/: >>222976929

>do (You) like exploring, taking photos and blogposting about it?
>potentially becoming the first pioneer in the entire history of 4chan to take those flags? (pic related)
Welcome to /flag/, a comfy 130 IQ general for Extraflags users that combines your passions for geography, maps AND travel by using the Extraflags extension

Threadly activities include travel/trip posting, urbex, wilderness exploration, hunting for radioactive minerals, eclipse and aurora hunting, (extra)flag collecting, map filling, cycling across Europe, other autistic activities and overall funposting

>What is Extraflags?
Extraflags is an open-source browser userscript that lets you choose regional flags, like states and provinces, to add to your already existing default country flag.
Turns out it's very well suited for travel posting because you can flex with the ultrarare (or at least, nice) flags you're travelling to, rather than using it as a reddit flair for tripfagging in other threads

What's up Goslar?
As a huge Berlin fan, it's so nice to finally have this flag. I also love that Berlin has two levels of flags below it. I went all over the city back in the day, but sadly I wasn't flagposting then.
>>
>>223463018
>What's up Goslar?
Not much. Lots of flag stuff work to do for me as I still have to dump four massive bike trips. Ovodda also still has to fully flag France before I can start dumping. Have half a mind to go on another bike trip. Weather looking very dry but also incredibly hot across most of Europe for the time being. Jobcenter supposedly is going to be more strict with me thanks to Fotzenfritz chancellor Merz. We'll see how that works out.

>As a huge Berlin fan
I was BORN in Berlin. Berlin gets a lot of shit yet everyone seems to want to move there. It's incredibly diverse. Almost every borough has its own identity which is pretty cool. Lots of green areas and bodies of water. I think Berlin is quite alright as far as similarly-sized cities ago but I'm generally not a fan of huge cities. Has its fair share of problems as well of course; more and more homeless people and public drug use, ghettofication and gentrification, trash, insane rent prices, overloaded public transport, too much traffic coupled with a lack of parking options, mediocre cycling infrastructure etc.

>>
>>223520900
That's only true for some parts of the California ecosystem, like chaparral and inland hardwood forests like oak. Even then, the frequency and severity of modern-day climate change-driven fires usually scarify the earth and make it so that new growth cannot shoot. The Caldor Fire is a good example of this.

Unfortunately our government and big corporations no longer care/virtue signal about fighting climate change and being pro-environment so things look pretty grim right now.

In a hypothetical scenario, every country in the world gets a slice of Antarctica centered on the south pole and extending all the way to the coast. The 360 degrees are assigned to countries in proportion to their population, at a longitude more or less close to the average longitude of the country.
In this scenario, the Vatican's slice would have at best (at the coast) a width of about 2 meters, getting narrower and narrower closes to the south pole. would be quite a bizarre polygon to draw on OSM. Always at the coast, Liechtenstein's slice would be about 100 m wide, Luxembourg's ~1.5 km, Switzerland's ~20 km, Italy's ~120 km or about 2.5° of longitude, USA's ~600km/15°, and needless to say India would get 2600 km of Antarctic coast, a whopping 64° of longitude, which is coincidentally roughly the width of India proper

I went there in 2018, it's basically that, but there's a Native American reservation which is straight out of the third world, but has a completely modern high school and visitor center thanks to Uncle Sam. Not much to do otherwise besides maybe fish it. Nevada outside of the Reno-Sparks and Vegas metro is basically completely deserted. It's beautiful in a very eerie way.

There's a peak near there I want to do someday as well.

Didn't get to see nearly enough of the old-growth redwoods today, just did one trail then went up and got the park high point (a crappy bushwhack into a grove of live oak where no redwoods are) as well as a fire lookout peak. Most of the old-growths are in state parks with no peaks around

Still got another day here but I am going to need to do the long and annoying drive on CA-299 to get the oh so elusive Trinity County

Been a while since I've visited here, just as dreary and creepy as it was when I drove through 10-15 years ago. This place may be in California but it's Oregon, nothing Californian about this place.

Also someone needs to add the flags for the Yurok and other tribes that are located in this county, passed through like 7 reservations and they all had flags flying.
>>
I was in the area, I had to bag an Oregon county for you guys. Stopped for gas and Dairy Queen (first time ever, not in California) and they pumped my gas for me, which is a classic Oregon urban legend. Apparently the station I chose is the only one that still does it but I was amused nonetheless. I remember watching the attendant do it when I was like 6-7 passing through some small town on OR-97 going to visit my grandmother in Bend. Wish I could have stayed longer, the Oregon coast is a fascinating and weird part of the country.

Went back the way I came, got 0.5-1 more day lads, hoping for big Trinity County tomorrow

Alright lads, long detour through the mountains to bag the rare flag, that leaves just three untouched in California

>Butte
>Lassen
>Modoc

Trinity County is def one of the most impoverished in the state, I noticed last night that it went from 0% to 10% Asian in 10 years, did some research and turns out a bunch of Hmong recently moved to the county to grow cannabis, which this region is famous for. However since California fully legalized the plant the cannabis industry has lost a ton of money, so who knows how long the Hmong will stay here but if they do it's possible that this could be a majority Hmong county in a couple decades with how small and old the population is.

last night, which was also my last one, i discover by pure chance that the hostel organizes a 11 PM "bar crawl", which is a guided group tour with priority access to two bars and one club with hosts of the hostel and other hostels
It could have been a cool experience for a solo like me that hasn't been in a club since high school, but i didn't feel like going. Now i regret my decision, but at least i will be in Spain again next year for the other eclipse so i could always check back here to say hello to the cute Italian receptionist (and attempting the mountain again lol)

I would love to do something like that with Kocaeli, I'm sure he's a cool guy

>i discover by pure chance that the hostel organizes a 11 PM "bar crawl", which is a guided group tour with priority access to two bars and one club with hosts of the hostel and other hostels
If if it's a good hostel you can get drunk right there in the common area. No benefit in going to overpriced and crowded bars imo. The hostel might even get a cut for luring the guests to a specific bar.

I like the taste of beer and I enjoy the feeling of getting drunk but I always feel so dirty as soon as the effects were off, even when I don't have a proper hangover. It's just not worth it ultimately so I only drink when the social situation calls for it. Which mostly means getting invited to a drink when I'm on a bike trip in Eastern Europe or the Balkans.

>Now i regret my decision
There's a good chance you would have regretted joining the pub crawl too. In any case, you did your health and wallet a favor.
>>
>>223995454

The last time I did a hostel pub crawl, I met a very pretty Norwegian girl. We spent hours talking and flirting; eventually we split from the pub crawl crowd. We had one more beer alone together, and I walked her back to her hostel. We talked on a bench until 4 am and then she asked for my number and Instagram. I gave it to her and went back to my hostel.

As you might have guessed, for some reason, she didn't text me or add me on Instagram lmao.

Point of the story is that pub crawls are worth it because you can replay such nights in your mind over and over again.

pretty sure you will make it bro.

in the meantime, take a look at this one instead: https://www.peakbagger.com/peak.aspx?pid=760
>>
>>224045541
I'm familiar with Golden Hinde; I've spent many hours daydreaming on PB looking at remote Canadian peaks with hardly any ascents. If you haven't heard of him, check out Fred Beckey, he was the legend of the PNW climbing community in the 1970's and logged all sorts of crazy first ascents from Washington to Alaska.
>>
>>224070841
the less remote ones with more ascents would already look good in our collections; Birdwood, Sir Donald, Robson...

>As time went on, [Beckey] decided that climbing was his life's focus. He never married or had children, he never pursued a professional career, he never sought money or financial security as a goal—his goal was to climb mountains.
absolutely based
>>
>>224072221
Bro Sir Donald and Robson are so brutal, Robson isn't even doable for most of the season because of bad weather. Even worse are the ultras of the Alaskan Panhandle like Mt. St. Elias, Logan, Fairweather etc they are almost impossible because they get blizzards basically every day
>>
>>224095615

that Eric Gilbertson guy casually dayhiking it with the owner of Peakbagger lol
anyway yes that part of the Pacific looks insane, some of the remotest parts of the world

Disco Elysium is cool at first but turns into a boring slog of a reddit game a couple of hours in. Ending has virtually zero payoff too.

I first finished it 3 years ago, now I am 65 hours in, probably on my 10th playthrough. It's a vibe thing lol but I honestly never get bored of it.

>Ending has virtually zero payoff too.
Ok I'll give you that one, I had many different endings and none were satisfying.
>>
>>224148911
Maybe check out Esoteric Ebb. Recently released, probably somewhat similar to Disco Elysium but it looks a lot more interesting at first glance imo. I like the dice rolling and stat improvement and checks, the different solutions to a problem etc. but Disco Elysium did very little for me after the first few hours. Very gray and dull and no characters that made me care about them.

I guess but the measurehead scene was such a long politics rant and so in-your-face that I found myself audibly groaning. It wasn't very funny or clever. Just annoying and tedious.

I had the game gifted to me on Steam so I felt compelled to give it a full playthrough. I would have been pretty mad had I paid for it myself.
>>
>>224154451
I just had a look and I bought it for $18 using a gift card someone had bought for me.

kek I was like wtf is this for the first few hours

intredasting; what's precisely so scary to (You)? the height, the clouds or the view? because the mountain itself pretty much isn't

also FINALLY making the list of flags in sPain
>>

I meant like welcome back to Milan

Also, I think the height is the scary part

>also FINALLY making the list of flags in sPain

>>
>>224164837
>the height is the scary part
giving that i also do urbex (should do more), I have to say that being at a great height on a building or any artificial edge is NOT like being on a mountain at all, it's a completely different environment unless there are literal cliffs. If you'll ever go to Uludag you will understand very well

tldr; watch Shiey if you want to get scared lol
