>>225020494Yeah they really don't get it, when I talk to other people (which is very rare, they're usually reddit niggers) we have a couple points we would disagree with each other on in terms of word usage, grammar, phrases, that guy probably couldn't even spell right. The idea of even being CLOSE to a native in anything at all, I would think, wouldn't even be in terms of hours, but in years of you spending like 1/2 your time with the language per day until you just think naturally in it.I've just broken through to the "think in said language" but that's still not natural thinking in said language. Natives literally input for 16 hours a day for their entire lives - many of them still being cringe and not being able to talk about advanced topics - and these people think they can brute-force anything near native by just inputting 4 hours per day for a couple years.

>>225017984These genuinely suck though, I tried to translate them to German and actually struggled a bit and the difficulty levels are all over the place. I think that's been like 8 hours of input today, or at least pretty close to it. Now it's close to bedtime, how do I get more hours in? Just stay up for 24 hours inputting so I can say that I did 16 hours? At this point it's right around my TL and NL being split.

Not posting this in djt because it's a shitholeI'm starting to struggle to see a reason to keep learning Japanese, even though I used to want to move there, work there, and, optionally, make friends there.Japanese content sucks ass, even the underground scenes suck ass>In this community we pretend to act like niggers and listen to rap that was popular in the 90s.>Well in this community we pretend to be niggrettes and dress in bizarre and stupid ways>In THIS community we literally devote our entire life to king of the hill>Also we really hate you for being not Japanese but we're going to be passive aggressive about it>also we are going to make it substantially harder to migrate to Japan (which is fine) except for poojeets, who we welcome with open arms as a boost to our workforceI wasn't expecting Japan to be like my epick animeys, but I also didn't expect them to turn flat out retarded.I think I'm going to jump ship to Russian or Chinese, I just can't stop thinking about how I wasted the last 5 or so years on an increasingly unforgivable people's language. Ancient japs would be seppukuing themselves over the embarrassment.
>>225022061>it feels like i can produce more fluent sounding TL sentences ex nihilo than when i base them on english ones at leastBecause you're consciously trying to adhere to English language structure, it'd be a problem even if you were translating into your native lang. Living in a country, even a highly English-speaking country, without knowing the language, is stupid and will result in bad times.I could also see how someone would want to learn it if they're dating/married to a someone from there. They're also appealing because they're easy, at least theoretically. In practice they're harder than people give them credit for.And finally, they are highly related to each other, so people have the idea that they're going to easily add three languages to their epic polyglot profile page.
>>225022181I thought it was just n5-4 content that sucked ass so much. Games are great. Anime is nice... It's been getting more and more boring though. Most of the channels on YouTube suck ass. Talking to native japs sucks ass, at least the ones who are interested in talking to foreigners.Turns out that annoying femfags exist the entire world round, really thought I was running away from that and I could go to Japan and have a chance at dating just a normal guy who happens to be gay, but that was all fantasy.

He looked at the picture and became angry.3. Why did that picture make you so angry?> Medium4. The picture, which showed a damaged house, made her angry.5. I felt angry when I saw what the picture showed.6. Although the picture was simple, it made everyone in the room unusually angry.> Hard7. The longer he looked at the picture, the more angry he became, as if each new detail confirmed something he had already suspected.8. “Don’t show me that picture again,” she said, turning away from it, although she continued to stare at its reflection in the window.9. What made him angry was not the picture itself, but the realization—formed while he was examining its smallest details—that the scene had been presented in a way that concealed what had actually happened.
>>225030099Proompt used: Generate a translation challenge on the subject of seeing a picture making someone angry. This translation challenge should consist nine sentences in English. The first three sentences should be easy, the next three medium, and the final three hard. All sentences should avoid overly idiomatic phrasing and expressions, and an attempt to make them somewhat unique in things like form, structure, sentence type (statement, question, command, etc.) and verb tense should be made while obeying the following constraints. Easy sentences should use simple clause structure, avoiding relative, subordinate, and embedded clauses, but may use coordinate clauses if both clauses themselves obey the easy constraints. Easy sentences should mostly be about non-abstract concepts, such as actions, observations, and simple feelings such as anger, happiness, sadness, etc. They should use only common, beginning-level vocabulary with the optional exception of one or two words related to the topic of the challenge as given above. Medium sentences may include simpler cases of more complex syntax, like relative, embedded, and subordinate clauses, slightly less common vocabulary, and discuss more abstract aspects of the topic given above. Hard sentences may include more advanced vocabulary and grammatical devices, feature intricate sentence structures, and discuss abstract aspects of the topic given above. For example (the following list is non-exhaustive): hard sentences may include relationships described between multiple actions or states happening or occurring at the same time or at different times, snippets of interrupted dialog, sentences with embedded parentheticals, precise descriptions of details, etc.

Huh, so it turns out that ALG is bullshit and so is the concept that early output = “damage.” Everyone talks about “learning like a baby,” but forget the fact that babies constantly babble and try to imitate what they hear.
>>225031139You realize that most online discussion about language learning methodology is bullshit when you're forced into a situation in which you absolutely must learn a language and are constantly surrounded by it. Humans have a natural faculty for language, and, given enough time, you just pick them up. Of course, you probably won't gain a native accent as an adult because, in general, enculturation > acculturation.

You are no longer 5. This is one of the few things in language learning adults are way better at.You’re telling me if I gave you a bunch of random shapes, wrote down their names, and told you to learn the names of the ~50 shapes you couldn’t do that?
>>225039891No I definitely can do that, I do something similar to that in my schooling. I never said it was impossible I just said it was something I think is objectively odd to say is so easy it should only take you a "few days" even if you spent an hour a day lets say over 4 days to think that you would know EVERY hiragana and katakana symbol to idk an 80% accuracy on a recognition test to me is ridiculous.

The reason I'm studying French is because I need it for academic reasons, but I'm more passionate about learning Japanese. When I was learning the latter, I had a clear goal and interest in learning and applying what I learned. With French, however, my goal felt too distant (be able to read a specific complicated academic writer). But since setting goals seems to be important for forming habits, I want to ask: what kind of thing attainable if I study French daily for two months? I would aim to study vocab and grammar and comprehensive listening daily (or at least vocab daily and, for the latter, n times per week.).

If I have trouble figuring out a German sentence with ‚Hin‘ and ‚Her‘, I just remember ‚Hither‘ (to here) and ‚Hence‘ (from here) in Early Modern English share the same first 2 letters of each respectively. Then there is ‚Thither‘ and ‚Thence‘ for to and from there, and ‚Whither‘ and ‚Whence‘ for to where and from where, if further clarification is needed.
>>225054434I think reading is the only consistent thing that people do for enjoyment hours a day that can actually keep them engaged, youtube slop hour counts are always inflated. 90% of the time they're not really paying attention, and it's just hard to sit through 5 hours of boring videos. I could read for 5 hours no problem and most readers are the same, just more intelligent and focused. Of course readers would make better progress.>>225055655One book a month is pretty lame, although it depends a lot on the difficulty / length. It would take you more than half a year at that pace just to read the harry potters, ideally you'd crank that series out in about two months.Once you start focusing on doing whole series instead of individual books your reading speed and interest in said books (if you find a good series) will massively increase, you learn specific vocabulary, your retention increases, and you get artificially skilled in on specific area. At this point you should be able to find a good fantasy series and crank out like 3 books a month EZPZ.
>>225055429>Wake up an hour early and listen to stuff while you breakfast and get ready to work>Make a strict routine of focused study and make sure to stick to it - no lazy inefficient study methods, you don't have time to wasteLike that pretty much, you have to budget your time more and make space for it. >>225069970What exactly do you have trouble with? 'Her' is a movement to the speaker and 'hin'. They are mostly used as separable verb prefixes of verbs of movement. Despite the fact 'her' is a cognate of 'hence' you cAn just remember that it is closer to 'here', i. e. closer to you the speaker. Also the stand alone expression 'Hin und her' is a fixed expression, even hendiady. 'Hin und her laufen.' for example means to walk around in the same spot in an erratic manner. Then there are the more specific forms like 'hinüber', 'hinauf', etc.
>>225070282If ‚Her‘ is closer to ‚Here‘, what is ‚Hin‘ closer to among the spatial demonstratives? Also, my analogy of Her-Hence and Hin-Hither falls flat and leaves me confused regarding ‚Hinweg‘ as in „Lamm Gottes, du nimmst hinweg die Sünde der Welt: erbarme dich unser...“.

There is a Nicos Weg series, a guide from Refold on how to set up Anki, try some premade decks (link to Refold in OP, there is a deck for Nicos Weg, a deck from the Goethe Institut, a deck from xefjord - all for free).German Pimsleur is for free on Telegram.Yt is full of Comprehensive input videos. There is an assimil course at Anna's Archive.Try a few things, see what works and see if you can stick with it. I'm completely exhausted from learning and listening to German because the initial stages of the language, learning materials and beginner content bore me (Italian was different, just the sound of the language and the ability to put together simple sentences gave me enough joy to get through the initial stages). For now, I'll keep pushing, even if I break down every other day. Try things out, try to be more or less consistent to the end of the year, see if you can handle it. If not, change the language for an easier / more beloved one, or quit learning languages, because why bother?Viel Glück
I like how Yiddish is like German's little Jewish brother and Ladino is like Spanish's little Jewish brother
Do Englishers have a hard time understanding foreign accents they haven't heard much or is English easy to understand all around?
>>225084810English speakers are very tolerant of non-native accents because we hear them so often. Ironically, many smaller language communities don't extend the same grace in reverse.
>>225085089you kind of have to since English is the french language today
>>225040789African languages aren't even real languages, some of them only have a couple thousand words. They're tribal ooga booga babble, native american languages are more advanced than them. There's a reason english speakers were able to show up all around the world and learn enough of the language to translate for other englishers, no resources, no writing, they pieced it together because ooga booga tribal languages have hardly any words or complicated phrases.
>>225040789Hungarian has a 100x more worthwhile corpus and culture than anything in Africa despite being extremely difficult to learn and spoken by a relatively small population in Eastern Europe. >>225083935Danke!I reviewed German pronunciation, like 70% of it. Like how the R could sound like a schwa, how final plosives become B D G --> P T K, how to differentiate short and long vowels, etc.I also remember shp, sht, and ie and ei (pronounce the sound name of second letter, like ie is a long "e")I have the option of starting proper with A1.1 German or to spend a week shadowing/perfecting consonant by consonant, vowel by vowel so I can sound better.I must kill this tendency to be perfect (perfectionism) from now, right?
I was a /lang/ fraud. I often consulted a dictionary for words I didn't know, and wiktionary to check declined forms. I did not speak TL meaningfully. Instead, it was like the theoretical concept of Chinese translations, only rote memorization of words and rules without a real understanding. With this TL, it will be different. I will not rely heavily on dictionaries or wiktionary. I will not check transcriptions when I don't understand audio. I will make mistakes and you will NOT like it.
>>225086522Are you the Poleaf? Did you change your TL?
>>225086442>I must kill this tendency to be perfect (perfectionism) from now, right?Idk. German drives me crazy and I get very irritated and I quit every few days only to continue the next day and I suck at German, so I'm not the best advisor. But German has the best self-study materials from what I saw (maybe except Japanese).
>>225086573I am no Poleaf no longer.
>>225086624Okay... so what are you now?
>>225086679I'll leave that to your imagination. I don't speak TL yet.

Should I do pic rel. (Arabic academy) alongside German? I will make sure to dedicate equal time to both.
>>225085363>french languageDid you translate lingua franca here? What do you call it in Portuguese?
Is pic rel. worth 4 years of studies?
/lang/ challenges are bad for you, actually. NEVER do a /lang/ challenge. Go to your TL's general and make a post of your current thoughts in TL. Maybe introduce yourself. They may or may not decide to correct you. But this is the right way.
>>225087677do they teach this too?https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=B6u60UVr4Sk
Would /lang/ be willing to fund my language acquisition through gofundme?
>>225087452>>225087677If you reach B1 in German, you might be able to do it, but it's unlikely now
>600-700 hours to reach fluency in category 1 languagesDoes that mean with 2 hours of study per day I could invest 730 hours in a year and be fluent in a simple language like italian or dutch?
>>225089205No, the FSI numbers are misleading
>>225033767>>2250399761. Checking how your name and the name of your dog, gf etc. is spelled and writing it and spelling out loud several times. Free kana basically2. https://djtguide.github.io/learn/kana.html as other anon recommended. What I did was learn two rows of both hiragana and katakana, then the second and third, then the third and fourth, etc. I moved on as I felt confident3. Mnemonics from tofugu dot com (pdf for hiragana i kataka) for characters that are hard to remember. You can also come up with your own 4. Anki. I think I used this deck https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1133476087 because it showed the hiragana/katakana alternative next to the answer

>Only 800k words in the series I'm readingIt feels like so much more... only about half way done...And to think for a decent level I need to hit 9 million, I still have to do like 10 more series after this to truly be partially fluent.>>225089205The FSI numbers are based on working proficiency. You'll still do the thing ESL's do where they use stupid / nonsensical words that natives secretly laugh at, and you'll still have a funny accent and struggle understanding things, but in your specific field you'd be able to work a job if you studied for it.The rule of thumb for FSI >They assume you study at home an equal number of hours>Double that estimate>If you play hookie and take time off before you're b2 you start forgetting stuff fast, so this adds to the hours needed>If you do sub-optimal things like your input not being comprehensible enough, or you being a little tired, not paying attention ECT this is a multiplier on said hours>If you go max-optimal you could realistically cut them - anki grinding is several times faster than ANY AVAILABLE METHOD, but will also not make you sound like a normal speakerSo you should assume 1,200 hours for a category 1 language as a base. From here you look at all the multipliers you stacked on, so you could be looking at merely 1,000 hours, or you could make this a 2,000 hour journey, but either of those will not be actually fluent and will just be "professional-level" talking of an ESL.For me I've hit some great abstract hour counts but most of it was non-intensive study, so now I'm brute-force studying like 4 hours a day (reading) to make up for it and hit required reading tokens.
>>225090057>anki grinding is several times faster than ANY AVAILABLE METHODI have 600-800 cards due a day in my tl, sometimes more. that's not even a backload, I clear it every day. it's pretty shitty, I wouldn't do it if I weren't in a hurry
>>225090057>anki grinding is several times faster than ANY AVAILABLE METHODfaster for what? and what's your evidence for that?
>>225090792Yeah.I would have kept doing it if I knew how good it was at first, it's so shitty but it speeds you up so much. It isn't that I'm trying to rush it or anything either, it would have just let me read interesting things faster. But it's pretty shitty to try to do this high-efficiency grind unless you really like it.>>225090808Nah all you get is an anecdote. Worked on my machine, would have worked more if I did it more.Faster for reaching the funny fluency levels, because vocab is the biggest hurdle by far and you need to know like 10k words to even reach a low level of fluency.
>>225090792I thought I had heard that anki is inefficient for anything more than like 30 minute SRS of cards you've mined?Desu when I first started studying I basically learned all of my vocab from anki.
My TL has pretty shitty resources considering that almost 40% of its speakers speak it as a second language.
>>225091056English?
>>225091072Hebrew.English has unbelievable resources.
use this for next op
>>225090834>Faster for reaching the funny fluency levelsyour listening will still suck even if you can parrot words sooner than benis lewis
>>225091200Listening is unbelievably easy once you know the vocab, really only takes a few minutes a day.The hard part of any language is just the vocabulary, this will always be true. Once you know the vocab listening levels come in a fraction of the time. If you don't have the vocab listening will seemingly never come. You subvocalize when reading / doing anki (this happens without you even trying to do it) so if you know roughly how the language sounds your brain just automatically does listening while you read.
>>225091266>Listening is unbelievably easy once you know the vocab, really only takes a few minutes a day.that's why people complain they know the vocabulary and still can't understand movies without turning the subtitles on>Once you know the vocab listening levels come in a fraction of the timewhich languages are you learning?>You subvocalize when reading / doing anki (this happens without you even trying to do it) so if you know roughly how the language sounds your brain just automatically does listening while you read.ok then do that and come back in 6 months with your actual results
>>225078639It’s a colloquial expression for split screen co-op play on a console. >>225083770https://youtu.be/fJI64AMHbgIThis was the first rendition I saw just a couple months ago (because it was the first German one with English subtitles that showed up in a search). In hindsight, it’s full of innovations very distant from the original play; no lions are mentioned in the original libretto. https://youtu.be/IbyBs5z-uA4This is a ~30-minute abridged cartoon. I recall watching the special features of Star Trek: The Animated Series, and they said they were able - at the time - to show a greater creative diversity in animation as opposed to live action, especially in regard to sci-fi and other otherworldly genres like fantasy. https://youtu.be/WyAtvg3SufkThis one is the worst one I’ve watched as it has nearly no semblance to the original libretto as it really ins’t a Singspiel at all as most of the plot is unsung and unrelated, has only 3 songs done terribly, and has an added character for supposed ‘comic relief’ called ‘Grumble’ who is a crow that has the chutzpah to kvetch about everything, and I mean everything. Papageno and Papagena are also bizarre abominations. https://youtu.be/CsIARbd1850This is another in German with English subtitles that I have been eyeing but have not yet watched.
>>225091385>That's why people complain they know the vocabThey don't know the vocab in this case.>Which languages?Spanish>OK Then do that broI am doing that and listening is effortless. I could listen WAY before I could read effectively (I mean effectively, not having to stop to look things up and re-read slowly), and I could even listen while playing minecraft or something while distracted.Listening is a noob-level activity that's almost entirely about speed of understanding said vocabulary.I do do all of this and vocab is still the hardest part.
>>225090941that's the standard advice but afaik the stats show no strong decrease in efficiency or retention until 1+ hour sessions or 4+ hour days
>>225090941>>225091567They're just trying to avoid burnout here because most would quit before it gets too long. But yeah plenty of success stories from people who did it for an hour a day to learn something absurd like 20,000 words. It's not inefficient, it's the concept of diminishing returns. The most returns come at first and you get less later, but it's still better to use the most efficient method for said returns - every other method also suffers from those same diminishing returns, but anki gets pretty boring unless you're obsessed with it.
The way it gets exponentially easier to acquire new vocab around B2 needs to be studied
>Oh boy I read 20k words today, I bet that was a lot of progress>Need 11 million words to be fluent>1 / 550th of the way therewtf bros, that's like 500 alice in wonderlands (I read adult level literature but just for comparison)

I'm speedrunning TL. Much progress today. Later, /lang/cels.
>>225091622you don't appear to get diminishing returns, at least not within that range. 3 hours is just roughly 3x as much progress as 1 hour.
