Is there a seafaring culture in your country?
>>
>>226024466
no, merchant marines are for flips, indians, slavs, and uhh one or two nords o algo

odd perhaps, considering if we got cut off by sea that would be very bad
>>
yeah, we added a protection racket too
>>
>>226024466
In the past the coastal and even riverine areas were very prominent when it came to shipfaring. But as many shipyards have closed or severely downsized their operations over the last decades I doubt that it is as strong as it once was. Still the maritime heritage is very prominent in northern Germany.

The Wappen von Hamburg is one of my favorite ships. It had a multi tiered baroque stern mirror which had a lavish and highly detailed gallery system designed by a master sculptor. Very cool ship.

For me its the Alder von Lübeck from the 1560s. It mixed carvel and clinker construction methods and was in this uneasy, transitionary but very interesting spot where late medieval ships would eventually transform into 17th century ships of the line.

No we just build ships
We're also surprisingly good at it for some reason

Yes, Utah is known for its navy if nothing else. Sailing the great salt lake in search for plunder and booty yarr.

No but I do find our women unappealing enough to try anyway.

I have so many experiences like it feels like a different life. I went to 30 places. Morocco, Portugal, Panama, Curacao, Fiji, Easter Island, New Caledonia, Australia to mention a few. I Worked from 0630 to 22, then i had sometimes night watch and had to stand in front of the ship and look for lights for four hours, or helms the ship or do inspections. We climbed up and stood on steel wires and packed sails, you just had to ignore the wind and the noise, just focus on the task.

Cool. Sounds hard, did you feel adventurous at all?

You have the coastal fisherman tradition, cruise ship culture and boat hobbyists, but that's mostly it, if you don't count ship- and boat building.

Only on the west coast. The Baltic Coast barely has any nautical culture. Compare the port of Stockholm with the port of Gothenburg. Stockholm has a teeny weeny harbor

But Stockolm has like 30 000 islands?

how was the pay?

According to Britroach naval historian Andrew Lambert, the US is not a naval power at all and lacks a true "seapower culture" unlike the UK, Netherlands, Venice and even Japan, but is instead a continental land power for which naval power is ancillary and non-essential, and in which it is fundamentally disinterested. In pic related, he insults America several times thusly:

>"In the Cold War the sea occupied a marginal strategic role, a ‘flank’ to be secured and a supply line to be protected. While contemporary America possesses a vast military navy, it thinks and acts like a land power. Britain does not."
>"After 1956 Western sea power was reduced to the collective effort of medium- sized sea states, led by the wholly continental agendas of the United States."
>"The US neither needed nor wanted a global sea- control navy, but it was most anxious that Britain should not have one. By cutting the scale of British naval strength the Washington process reduced the strategic weight and diplomatic impact of naval force in world politics between 1922 and 1941."
>>
>>226026032
Sounds really harsh, but cool. Was the pay any good?
>>
Nope
>>
>>226026937
You're going to say I'm seething or something but that is utter nonsense and he obviously has a bone to pick with the US because he imagines we're the reason he can't live his wet dream of being in a Hornblower or Aubrey-Maturin novel. It was by being a global sea power that we first became an empire in 1898. Sea power was essential to Roosevelt's philosophy on power projection (not really his, it was invented by Alfred Thayer Mahan but not named that at the time he invented it), and that's why he pushed so hard to complete a Central American canal. The Pacific Theater in WW2 was heavily dependent on naval success - a land army couldn't have defeated the Japanese. In the Cold War and today, our ability to put ballistic missile subs up our adversaries' asses and nuke them instantly is vital to the Nuclear Triad, which are equally important an codependent.
