I'm creating my own semitic language just for fun.Since it's a naturalistic language, and I really enjoy languages like Arabic and Aramaic, I decided to take reconstructed Proto-Semitic and evolve it with a system of sound changes and grammatical evolution that mimic a natural language cycle from an old > middle > modern state.I didn't really have anything in mind to start with, but decided on a Bronze Age Cilician homeland to begin with, then a long Mediterranean and Eurasian diaspora + a comparatively conservative grammatical foundation beneath a softer modern pronunciation. The fictional community starts in Bronze Age Cilicia and gradually expanded through trade, settlement, and interrmariage. The conflicts of the 7th century along the Byzantine-Sasanian and Arab-Byzantine frontiers contributed to major displacement. Later diaspora includes communities across Europe and Central Asia as well. For the cultural framework, which I had to establish because this is a big part in how the language evolves, I opted to include decentralized extended families with locally selected councils, community deliberation, oral storytelling, and family custody of historical manuscripts. The modern standard emerges through 19th and 20th century educational/literary efforts rather than a centralized national government.
>>226048481nicehow do you say hello in your new made up cunts language?
>>226048481For the language itself, as I mentioned before I wanted a "soft" sound so I decided on inherited š > s, ś > š, conditional loss of ʔ and ʕ with compensatory lengthening, ay > ê, aw > ô, p > f, w > v, and historical intervocalic b > v. Vowels with circumflexes represent long vowels, since it's a pain in the ass to type macrons.I'm currently tentative on some other changes but my idea right now is ḫ > x, ḥ > h, q > k, and selected emphatic-consonant mergers, and I might soften intervocalic /x/ towards /h/ and certain affricates or fricatives towards less forceful realizations. For stress it's weight sensitive right now. Historical geminate reductions precede late construct deaccntuation. So far the broad phonological direction is established but many individual rules remain provisional so I'm iffy on producing a lot of vocabulary yet.The grammar is really what I want to establish first, but so far we retain the masucline and feminine nouns, inherited construct state possession, personal possessive suffixes, and an analytic genitive. I'll drop some examples:Masculine plural is historically -ū/-ī with modern leveling under investigation.Feminine plural is -ât, with exceptional stem classes.Dual is currently restricted to natural pairs, like gloves and shoes.Ordinary feminine/exceptional feminine kinship is a possible independent -a versus bound -at-Construct state is strict adjacency to the nominal possessorDefiniteness takes the construct chain which takes its definiteness from the final posssessorSuffixed posssessions are normally definite without an aditional article (which for now is "han" but that's subject to change)Analytic genitive is historically sourced linker which I still haven't decided on.
>>226048533In modern Cilician it would be "slêm"The way I formed it is it starts with Proto-Semitic proposed š-l-m formation with a long front vowel + our reduction of voiceless postalveolar fricatives at the beginning of words brings it to "salêm" in Old Cilician, which preserves the long vowel in Classical Cilician. In Middle Cilician, we lose the vowel due to unstressed initial /a/ being syncopated.
