I bought quite the expensive bitch for my first doll (seriously fuck this weird addiction I am developing why did I drop 4K like it's nothing) and realized that I appreciated the Etsy lady's backdrop and flowers/furniture she has. Does anyone have any good sources they like? She is 36 CMs tall. I'm thinking grass, clouds, typical fantasy beauty crap.
>>
>>50097055
>36 CMs
so is that roughly 1/5 scale? imo that’s kind of an odd one if so, but you might be able to get away with using some 1/6 furniture and props. 1/6 is one of the easiest scales to shop for, but it might take you some trial and error and paying close attention to measurements for compatibility. are you planning to build out a diorama with like silk flowers and ttrpg terrain or something?
>>
>>50096580
Dolldreaming is pretty nice and helpful from what i've seen and experienced. Don't know anything about doa
>>
>>50092032
Thanks anon I was afk when you replied.
>>
>>50097517
>are you planning to build out a diorama with like silk flowers and ttrpg terrain or something?
Precisely. I purchased from an etsy seller by the username AmadizBeauty. I'm surprised I purchase a non-anime-esque doll, but to be absolutely honest, and I mean fucking honest, the doll looks like someone I literally once knew. What faggot shit huh? Either way, I genuinely do plan to make a wonderfully bright and lively diorama with silk flowers and even a little flowing creek. It will be a lot of work, but I think it will be beautiful when it's done. I think life is so fucking ugly, ugly enough that those who hate it need to surround themselves with beauty which heals the mind and soul.
>tl:dr: yes
>>
>>50100858
sounds like quite a project! i looked at some of the seller’s etsy listings, and searching for “cathedral window” or “cathedral mirror” should find something with a similar structure to what they have in their background, plus some fairy lights. their furniture could be anything from a plant stand to a pet bed with some faux fur draped on it, for all i know
>flowing creek
if you go to the trouble of incorporating a fountain, may as well have some live plants too?
>>
>>50100858
>AmadizBeauty
Excellent taste. 1/4 is actually really easy to find props for, too. Look up props for dolls like Fashion Royalty 16 (not the normal one because those are 12" dolls), Tonner dolls like Ellowyne Wilde, Ashton Drake Gene Tyler, and even Volks sells nice props every once in a while. I find a lot of my best stuff from antique and vintage stores.
>>
>>50101307
>may as well have some live plants too?
My goodness, it's been absolute years since I've agreed with an anon so often. I like you! Yes, absolutely wonderful idea. Some small plants sounds exciting and really brings the whole scene to life.
>>
>>50101425
Thank you very much, anon. You have shaken some of my doubt here if I had picked something well. Thank you. I've never purchased from her before, but she does seem quite talented to the untrained eye.
>>
>>50101945
i hope it works out well, anon! thinking about it a bit more, one word of caution is that high humidity and direct sunlight are generally not great for dolls, so plants with lower water and light tolerances may be preferable

Do you guys have any tips for keeping hair this long neat during transport? Is there something I can wrap the twintails in so that they're less tangled when I pull her out of the bag? Especially if there's a lot of foot traffic where I'm shooting, I don't want to have to spend a couple minutes brushing her hair every time I pull her out for pictures.

Volks' haircare products help keep it manageable. I'm convinced their hairspray is diluted Aquanet/Rave in a spraybottle, but I still haven't found a dupe for their water wax.

I'm sad I can't just hug my dolls in bed and fall asleep with them. They have such a nice weight to them that it's really a shame that if I do fall asleep, I'll end up regretting it.
There was already one time I dozed off while holding a doll for ten minutes and while the doll was fine, I was quite upset that I came so close to damaging the face up and wig.

Funnily enough, this is one of the things I was thinking to try, but I didn't have any laying around to try. It was that or getting small squares of something like silk that I could wrap the hair in, since I think a smooth material would keep the hair from getting too teased.

alisaie is terribly chuuni, and i love it! i’m very impressed with the outfit, boots, accessories, and wig styling. they put wiring in the jacket collar so you can shape it around the neck, which is a nice surprise. all that faux leather has me worried for the longterm though, and the white suit is also tight af, like i don’t even want to try to make her sit. i probably need to use some product in the wig and fiddle with the shaping more. alphinaud will have to wait for another day…

So 10 years ago I stopped doing warhammer paint commissions and creating terrains and crap. I'll be honest and say I'm only two weeks in and ordered my first doll that costs an arm and a leg, but I've been wondering...for the grass, bushes, terrain in general, is there any specific company that does this sort of stuff for such sized dolls? I don't think in all the years of warhammer did I ever see a hobby shop displaying such things for such sized beings kek.

It does deteriorate over time. Keep dry and avoid handling excessively. I have old Volks shoes and accessories that are unused and still deteriorates while in packaging. Enjoy it while it lasts. I hate this intentional, planned obsolescence that they incorporate into their products to make you buy newer ones.

>>50116671
The major companies do make dioramas for events to promote their products. I have no clue what they used for the grass here. Warhammer would use the green sawdust. You might to have wing a lot of this.

Anyone know how/where I can source a doll that looks like this?
>>
>>50120290
looks like a custom mini dollfie dream to me. my best guess would be that you could find a custom head with a similar (but not exact) faceup style on a Japanese auction site, then buy an MDD body, wig (7”-8” iirc), eyes, and clothes separately
>>
>>50121041
oops, i’m wrong about the wig size (probably because i have an MSD instead of MDD). google tells me MDD fits 8”-9”. someone who knows better could confirm
>>
>>50121064
>>50121041
>>50120290
Seconding that that's probably an MDD with a custom faceup, and that they wear 8-9" wigs. You might also like Obitsu (Parabox) dolls in a similar size range, as well as Tinyfox and Imomodoll. You have many options.
>>
>>50120290
yes, you buy a custom DD-01 head off of YJA, throw in some brown eyes, and put it on an MDD body, and you will have that doll. (that is the sculpt/model, and it is very popular)

How often do you change your doll's cloths? I changed both mine today after they worse the same outfit for a few months and spent way too much time trying to get everything just right. Luckily, I always angle their heads down and to the right so they're looking at me when I sit at my desk but the pose and wig placement always takes me forever and I spent 30 minutes trying to get a hat angled just right but I think I got everything set.

On the left is Letina from Myou wearing G389, her wig is WDR3007 both from alicebjd and on the right is Olivia from Maskcat wearing G479 from alicebjd and I think the wig came from Denverdoll.

I thought I'd last with one doll for a lot longer than just two months, but Hajime came in today. Aimerai dolls were the first ones that I fell in love with, so buying one of theirs was a long time coming. Admittedly, she might have been my first had I not sprung on the Miku rerun, but what can you do. N+1 and all that, right? I will have to find some time to go out and take some pictures with her, though. Not sure where a good location would be, since I think her dark uniform demand a specific type of setting. Definitely something more gothic than the nature pictures that I usually like to take. Decisions, decisions

Dolk has a ton of these things for some reason, most of them are either male, fantastical, or have no arms at this time – but keep an eye out and eventually someone will make one that suits your desires. I see a few of these every year.

DDE has this one, which has similar proportions but... is a bit fantastical.

where do euroanons find doll face artists? I'm new to this hobby and would like to commission a head for an OC I have in mind. Etsy doesn't seem to have a large variety, Booth filters me due to the language barrier and Yahoo auctions is completely inaccessible in Europe...
Also, the character has closed eyes, should I look for an artist with experience in this or is it a no big deal?
>>
>>50140037
try seeing if there are doll fairs around where you live, you can probably find someone there
>>

i've heard a lot of good about shines workshop

the qna also has a directory of faceup artists

Does anyone know of a generic alternative for volks wig spray? Apparently they no longer ship it to europe.

>>50133393
>with too much time and money
Couldn't be me.
>>
>>50141590
The setting spray? I'm convinced it's watered-down Aquanet/Rave in a spray bottle based on the smell alone. Decant some of the cheapest hairspray you can find in the EU equivalent of a dollar store and see about mixing it with quantities of distilled water until you get something that feels similarly tacky yet quick-drying (or just use the stuff straight, though it's gonna have a lot more "hold" and coverage in comparison.) If you find the right one, you'll know. It has a characteristic scent of vaguely floral fumes.

For the oil mist, I'm not convinced of this, but I am assuming it's mineral oil emulsified into a quantity of water, if it's not just straight mineral oil in a spray bottle? Don't take that at face value, I haven't tested this and I don't want to hurt any dolls – but unless there are specific oils safe for synthetic wigs, I can't imagine it being anything else.

As for the wig wax, it's some kind of "water wax", but I have NOT found a dupe for it, unfortunately. All the ones I've tried are much more of a solid wax instead of a cream. They "hold" differently, might leave residues on the wig, and overall have been a poor substitute for whatever Volks is selling. It's possible it's a bespoke cosplay-specific styling product for synthetic wigs I haven't come across yet; there was a shortage once at Volks (JP and US) on water wax and I tried a ton of different things from local stores, but none of them gave equivalent results.

Finally, I've heard their wig shampoo is just watered-down fabric softener, but I haven't tested that myself. In any case, good luck anon! I hope you can find some things that work for you. The changing shipping situation globally continues to be a nightmare.

once you break it down into parts, its not that complicated, it just looks that way all together
>>
>>50147161
If you have to break it down into parts, it's already complicated.
Not to mention some of these parts are very small and very precise. Like the identical twisting of the ribbons on the lace on the front of the skirt or the bands that hold the sleeves.
>>
Do any anons here make clothes for their daughterfus?
>>
>>50147234
idk for me its not, i did sewing in grade school and have made dolls and figures and model kits, everything can be broken down into parts and thats how you attack any project, piece by piece. i think for this the hardest bit would be not having my sewing machine fucking up the fabric as its a POS.
>>
>>50147276
Well yeah, there's absolutely nothing complicated that isn't broken down into parts. It's complicated because it does have parts. Many of them. So that's a lot of work, precision and experience that goes into making something like that, leaving aside the design work if it was all done by one person.
But I don't think anyone is expecting a single stitch to take care of the bustier, the lacing and the ornaments all at once.

I had a bit of trouble with the wig — I’m still not very good at handling it — but it was definitely a new experience dressing such a doll. I didn’t expect her to be that tall!
But in this photo, I realize her hair is a mess. I hope I didn’t ruin the wig.
It motivates me to take better photos than this one, which I took in a hurry.

>>50163561
cute!! handling wigs is going to be tricky and imperfect despite your best efforts, but that’s ok. as long as you only brush gently, in small sections working up from the bottom, you shouldn’t ruin the wig (i.e. by distorting the synthetic fibers). if you don’t have a tiny doll comb or a tiny toothbrush, a q-tip can work in a pinch for very light surface smoothing and nudging small sections into place. you’ll want to be really careful to avoid touching the face whenever possible!

Mission ??success??failed??. In terms of making her taller things worked great. Hibiki's grown about 3cm and proportionally exactly where I'd like her compared to Rin. Downside is that her original knee joint had too much material removed and so everything is kind of just floating around like she's an Imomodoll. I'll have to do another bit of surgery after getting an extension 3D printed out to fill the gap -- the peg itself isn't removable from the joint.

As for the new elbow joints, they extremely stiff for rotating the forearm and wrist compared to the older set. Probably need to shave off some material and bend in the upper arm so its not gapped as badly. It's not the drop in replacement that I thought it would be.

As for the fur, it's actually not a coat, it's a boa that was included with the dress. ebay.com/itm/116003312332
fair warning, that dress did not come laced up, and it took me over half an hour to get it laced and I had to use a tiny crochet hook to do it.
>>50181083
Thanks! It was a lot of fun to make all those wheat bricks, cheap too, it's a shame I have to get rid of them since they're real dried wheat and they're already falling apart a bit.
She's actually suspended in the air there, I bought a decorative table bar so I could start having easier flying metroids again. I used the invisible doll stand from ACBJD and clipped it to the bar. Worked really well. pic related if you're interested, it's a raw showing the stands.

I've been thinking about making some custom shirts and pants for my doll, but I've never sewn before. What are the materials I should get as basics besides a sewing machine, cloth, scissors and thread? I don't want to fall for the "buy every expensive thing in existence" meme
>>
>>50182423
That's really all you need to start. And some buttons/closures as needed.
>>
>>50182423
i would add some tear away stabilizer material to the list. not exactly a basic notion, but sometimes when you’re working with small pieces, especially in light weight fabrics, the machine can kind of pull the fabric down into the machine and get stuck. for me, stabilizer is well worth it for the headaches it helps avoid. my machine is super old though, so idk if a new machine would behave much better for this kind of thing
>>
>>50182458
>>50182704
Thanks for the info anons <3
>>
>>50182751
Oh, and pins. Forgot that. You'll want pins to join pieces of fabric together and hold them together before they're sewn. You can try to get by without them, but they will significantly improve seam consistency if you use them.
>>
Penis.
>>
>>50182912
Some dolls have detatchable ones, other dolls have ones which are strung and can be posed. Some come with fantasy penises (penii?)
>>
>>50182423
A small traveling iron (regular sized irons tend to be too big and clunky for doll sized clothes imo) and an ironing board/mat, if you don't have one already. Ironing seams can make a huge difference for the final look of a garment.
Pins, as others already said, but make sure to get some with glas heads, not plastic, so you don't accidently melt them when ironing.
A seamripper, because screwing up and having to undo a seam is not a question of "if" but "when".

>>50182704
>my machine is super old though, so idk if a new machine would behave much better for this kind of thing
Mine is fairly new and still does this if the fabric is very stretchy or thin/slippery. I think it mostly comes down to how wide the opening on the baseplate is. If you have a machine that can do zig-zag stitches or, even worse, all kinds of fancy decorative stitches it needs a baseplate with a very wide opening so there's simply less surface area to grip the fabric and hold it in place.

why would a doll stand cost 200 bucks? Sometimes I wonder if some of the items in this hobby is just plain overpriced.
>>50183315

hello, i hung around /ona/ for a bit but I recently decided to buy a BJD just for the dress up aspect of the hobby!

Before anything, I just wanna say I bought from aliexpress cuz I wanted to play it safer and see how i'd like the doll first and stuff. I definitely plan to buy something more genuine in the future.
https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256808278098794.html

I decided on a 1/6 because its not too small and not too big in my opinion.
Do you think this was a good option for a complete beginner?
I managed to message the seller and get the eyes in the color I wanted as well as a wig. So I consider that a win.

>>
>>50187013
Let me know how'd you solve it lol, such a mystery. It's so pretty, and I only want the best for my dolls.
>>
>>50187077
Well, you can get small marble tiles at the hardware store - the samples are the right size and fairly cheap. Drilling the hole for the actual stand would probably be the hardest part of the whole build. Can probably find a similar blank wood base, but if I can't I need to eventually buy a router anyways, and the legs can be bought on amazon. The stand pipe is probably brass? The only really hard part there is brazing one the saddle.
Everything else is just paint and finish.
>>
>>50186092
She looks reslly cute. Welcome to the eventual end of your wallet
>>
>>50186803
That's usually done with wax or glue. You can find youtube videos on how cosplayers style their wigs and that'll help, they're usually made of the same material and the techniques genreally transfer in scale.
>>
>>50185759
When the base dolls cost as much as they do, they know the pockets are deep and the collabs have no reason to hold back. But I tend to agree, a lot of things are over priced for my taste, but whales are gonna whale no matter the hobby.

Shops with some casual clothes usually have leggings and similar items. I don't think I've ever seen BJD bike shorts but you can probably adapt them from a pair of tights.
I've bought this one but I've barely used it. I think it was a bit tight more MDD but maybe I was just too lazy.

>>
>>50191054
You probably wouldn't need a base for small-medium sized hair intakes like those, just pinning them and then spraying them with glue should make it stay even after you take the pins out.

Ordered my first doll today. I want to buy more bigger and expensive dolls, but all of the really pretty ones I’ve seen have a hand painted face with seperate eyes, head, and body. I’m really lost on how to even go about this, do I need to learn how to do a face up? I already do acrylic paintings so it might be okay? I’m just afraid how much one build would cost

>>
>>50194925
You need to learn if you want to do it yourself, otherwise there are lots of artists that would love to do it for you. There's also a lot of heads available on Yahoo Auctions Japan and homeless doll heads wind up on ebay, etsy, mandarake, and mercari all the time. The OP post has a guide that will help get you started. It can seem daunting, but the first time you put a custom doll together is worth all the waiting and hassle.

Honestly Im kind of disappointed she got a resin instead of a DD like the other girls are getting

Wanted her though, but she is super popular so a rerun is possible but not for a while
>>
>>50194896
cute and sophisticated!

>>50194925
i’m a bit confused, anon—it sounds like you just ordered a doll, but you already know you’re aiming for something different? if so, i would maybe consider cancelling your order if possible and waiting until you can get what you consider one of the “really pretty ones” instead. besides the initial cost, i would keep in mind display space and whether or not you are buying in scales that can share clothes, shoes, accessories, etc., as all of those will eventually outpace the cost of the doll itself if you do stick with the hobby. regardless, i hope you enjoy whatever doll(s) you do get! a lot of resin companies offer a default faceup option when buying a base head and body, some also offer a body blushing option, so you don’t necessarily need to paint your own unless you want to. a default faceup will probably cost somewhere around $60 to $100 extra depending on the company and model
>>
>>50195011
They only announced the 3 main girls, they kind of separate the girls into waves of 3 so I’m sure she’ll get a DD (very much hoping)
Glad to hear a rerun might be possible.. she did sell out on all 3 sites she was on
>>
>>50195019
I still like the doll I ordered! It’s just not as appealing to me as some of the custom ones I’ve seen. It was cheap so I really don’t mind if I don’t like it or not haha. Was just wanting to buy any type of BJD because all dolls I had were those cheap plastic ones that don’t have any joints in the elbows or knees, so I don’t know how much money I want to drop on a type of doll I’ve never even seen in real life. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, I really do appreciate it. I guess I’ll start practicing painting because those face-up prices are seriously not cheap lol… didn’t even think about sticking to the same size of doll to share clothes but that totally make sense as well
>>
>>50195226

Would fucking kill my wallet but...
>>
>>50195241
good luck anon, i hope it works out! are you leaning more anime style or realistic style?
>>
>>50196814
Definitely a more anime style but it seems like a lot of the dolls being sold right now are pretty realistic, there’s this one build I like and I’m pretty sure they have the build of their doll in their image name so I have to check that when I can
>>
>>50197136

>chase them off with a broom but they just come back the next day
Is there like a spray or something I can use to keep these things away?
Every autumn, like clockwork. Worse than fruit flies.
>>
>>50197503
Gotta get a few dolls to act as livestock guardians for the gourds. Or one big doll, like those big Obitsu girls. You could also hire an ogre, but they are an invasive species and bad for the environment if not carefully managed, so it's a lot of responsibility to balance between protecting your gourds and preventing the orc from stealing all the dolls endemic to your local environment.

If it helps, they should settle down and start making nests soon. They're trying to cache for winter right now.
>>
A silly grumble, but...
I will never understand doll shops that put out Halloween collections this close to Halloween. Under best case scenarios I'm getting it in November, and then have to sit on it until next year. I'm already looking for Christmas and winter stuff because of the lead time for shipping times.
