These people could be shit talking me in japanese and I'd have no idea.
In order to learn hiragana I spent my first 15 hs with the language learning how to write them in any random order with a modified djt kana script..It generated random characters and for each one I'd do different random drills with pen and paper, like writing the full row in reversed order. Afterwards I'd do similar drills for a few days. I used a similar but less intense method for katakana. The result is that I still make occasional mistakes with kana, whereas I almost never fuck up with hiragana. I've internalized it to the point the only early mnenomnic I occasionally remember is for け.So, yeah, don't do it half assed and don't do a speed run like a retard.

I know someone that's Japanese that I'll be moving in with as a roommate in Tokyo in December for a Japanese learning class to get a student visa, and he's telling me that I basically shouldn't even waste my time doing any self-studying of Japanese. He insists that I should wait until I'm in Japan, then I'll start picking up the language like within a month. And I've tried mentioning people on the internet, like those doing subs and translations, or people here for example, and he gets pissed off and tells me that I should just "immerse" myself in the language by being in the country. He doesn't want me to do ANY studying whatsoever, just come here and start talking to the locals and listening to them. He despises the idea of me doing any studying and just keeps telling me "immersion!" despite the fact that others have learned the language without having to do that, but he thinks it'll be an actual detriment.
