I think it does help to have an online profile first before going to a con so other kigs know who you are and you can have some people to join you right off the bat. It's a little easier to navigate a con in kig when you're with a couple others. It probably helps to get to know some people beforehand so you're going to the con with some people you know.
Try to get to know some kigs online/in person beforehand if you don't have anyone you can bring with you, at least find someone going to the same con.
Introducing yourself to another kig while you are in kig is hella awkward in my experience, it's best to get to know a couple people outside of kig first.

I was really reluctant to join Discord for quite a while, but it really is where all the people are.
See if you can find a regional server of people close to you and maybe meet a couple people. Your first meeting doesn't need to be in kig or anything, just hang out and get to know the person a bit.

I find that I don't absolutely need a handler, I can actually get around on my own alright, but it really depends on your mask vision and spacial awareness skills.
Having another kig to walk around with (preferably more experienced) just helps with navigating the space and knowing what to do, plus safety in numbers.

I keep myself pretty strict on not talking or lifting the mask unless there is nobody around.
Instead, I type out responses in the notes app on my phone and show it to whoever I'm talking to, keep a stylus on hand.
This works pretty well, I've had full-on conversations this way.
