When you read a visual novel, do you just install and start reading it, picking choices as your heart guides you, or do you check online for branches and follow a guide?

Unless you're going for something specific I wouldn't use a guide.
And in any case, I think that your first run should be as blind as possible.

No guide if straightforward. If getting into a route requires tricky flags and could waste times, then guide. If I don't feel like and want to exhaust all routes all by myself: guide.

I do both by trying to predict what the guide would suggest, so I'm not missing out
Neutral and bad ends are so boring

looking up guides ruins the experience. It's better to make the choices that feel right and then experience the consequences of your actions. If you just follow a guide then the consequences don't feel so real.

If it's a harem game then I just look at a guide. My main goal is to read all of the scenes, and I don't want to backtrack.
If it's a mystery or thriller then I go in blind for obvious reasons.
