>>50501687Kubinashi Recollection and Marisa of Liartop Mountain.
Not like I got it on this sale since I've been playing it for years, but Mystia's Izakaya is my go-to comfy game and you should get it along with all its DLCs if you haven't
I didn't buy it during the sale, but I played Marisa of Liartop Mountain recently and it was pretty goodhttps://store.steampowered.com/app/2514630/Marisa_of_Liartop_Mountain/
fantasy maiden wars is a masterpiece. even SRW anons acknowledge it as the best ever SRW.
>>50501687It ends on january 5th weirdo, that's week away.
Oh hey a fangame thread.Reminder for everyone that Touhou Labyrinth 3 is just around the corner. Only took him like a few years this time.https://store.steampowered.com/app/3067930/Labyrinth_of_Touhou_Tri__The_Dreaming_Girls__The_Mysterious_Orbs/29 Jan, 2026.
>>50503118Did they remove all the AI slop?
FMW is amazing and I can see why a lot of people consider it one of, if not, the best fan game. Also finished Marisa RTB which has really cute visuals but the gameplay is pretty repetitive after the first loop. Tried out Dystopia when they first dropped the demo but wasn't a big fan of the gameplay but might grab it seeing how well it was received on launch
What happened to that chink Fightan featuring BA's Sensei? Is it vaporware? Did it get canned?
>>50503509>Steam Winter sale is ending, post all the TOUHOU games you gotKorean gacha garbage made by Chinese isn't even /jp/
>>50502721Fucking THIS. I picked it up as soon as it came out this year and I was hooked off the bat. This is, without a doubt, the best Touhou fangame there is.>Perfectly captures the essence of golden-era Touhou (early Windows)>Reimagines the same events but in new and interesting ways that can keep even fans on their toes>The fact it's a reimagining means that there's lots of room for new, original scenarios, without breaking fidelity to the important parts of Touhou canon>Entire journey is full of incredible moments you'll want to remember as a result, lots of emotional moments you just never see coming absolutely blowing you away>EVERY character is given their due respect and attention>Perfect blend in between both Touhou and SRW. Feels like the spirit in which everything is done is indistinguishable between the two>Chock full of references that are done naturally and lovingly>Metric fuckton of content that somehow doesn't feel overwhelming>God-tier presentation>Amazing remixes of existing Touhou tracks and even some originals that could very well may have been composed by ZUN on a good day>Original characters that aren't intrusive and genuinely feel like they might as well have been made by ZUN>Said OCs are actually extremely likable, compelling, feel like they fit the Gensokyo mold, have great designs, and are the perfect excuse to have the final parts go utterly apeshit with universe-buster powerlevels in true SRW fashion, all somehow without betraying the actual canon powerlevels of the characters themselves, which still makes you feel like you're getting the authentic Touhou experience>NG+ still has tons of extra content that make it extremely easy and fun to replay>Lots of ideas that completely innovate on the SRW mold, EVERY NEW ENTRY>Genuinely never once feels like the game is wasting your time. It's somehow always finding something new to do without getting tiring, which makes it very easy to continue once momentum gets going>Gameplay and presentation somehow blend together so well that it really feels like you're having intense danmaku battles in the SRPG formatI hadn't played any SRW game since high school so imagine my surprise at how it just blew even the best ones out of the water.I've played a lot of Touhou fangames in my day but I genuinely think this one is, bar none, the best there ever will be. If I had to pick a single fangame to represent what people actually like about this series, it would 100% be this one. It's my GOTY and I personally can't recommend it enough.Pic related, end result of my NG+ run, which I didn't even think I'd do this year but ended up finishing it a month after I finished the first run. Incredible, excellent game.
>>50503514Fair point. To stay on-topic, then: Luna Nights is really enjoyable (if a little short).
>>50503524>1021 killsthe crimson slasher...
>>50503530It's her job and she does it VERY well
>>50503530>Be me>Reimu is my favorite Touhou>Maximize her stats for my first run>She's absolutely brutalizing everything>Do NG+>Still use her but try not to use her as much so I can see how other characters fare when pushed to their limits>Also decide to start on Lunatic this time now that I've got the NG+ bonuses>Turns out, Lunatic makes the game much harder>Who knew>Fully upgraded Reimu somehow destroys even harder than she did in my first run even considering this>Almost everyone else has to work hard just to have the same results they did on the vanilla run>Travels longer, moves faster, hits harder, saves energy better than everyone else on my team (who unfortunately just aren't as high stat-wise)>Can't send her out anywhere near the enemies without at least ten of them dying every half a turnPic related, this was from my first runWhat's crazy to me is that I learned that Reimu isn't even the best unit (though she is very high up there) and that the actual best units are some real horseshit at max stats.
>>50502057This is good
>>50503524Having played through the original four games (before Complete Box) I can definitely understand your enthusiasm, there's a very clear sense of passion from the dev team and seeing them change, improve and add new things over the course of the series is good fun. Obviously you can argue about a few points, especially related to the story, but the occasionally super sentimental sections feel like a carryover from the mecha side of their inspiration and are executed quite well for the most part. The decision to stick with particular character interpretations throughout was also a good move for the general cohesion of the narrative, even if some do feel like they get the short end of the stick.Of course, on a personal level, I was quite satisfied because the head developer and I apparently have the same favorite, so it was interesting to watch the plan unfold from series-long teasing for maximum build-up to the man outright tossing every single bit of cliche, sentimentality and "power of friendship" funny business out of the window for an entire chapter, right in the middle of the finale, to engage in a few hours of the most genuine favoritism and reverential gushing I have ever seenTo be perfectly honest with you, I've never even bothered to play Complete Box/DoSD because none of the new stuff aside from NG+ struck me as very interesting, and the base finale is good enough that any story additions feel excessive
>>50502721Is the current Fantasy Maiden Wars on Touhou any good?
>>50504590If you mean "Is the one currently out on Steam good" or "Is the Super Robot Wars Touhou fangame good" then yes to bothFantasy Maiden Wars/Gensou Shoujo Taisen is the name of the fangame
>>50504553>Of course, on a personal level, I was quite satisfied because the head developer and I apparently have the same favorite, so it was interesting to watch the plan unfold from series-long teasing for maximum build-up to the man outright tossing every single bit of cliche, sentimentality and "power of friendship" funny business out of the window for an entire chapter, right in the middle of the finale, to engage in a few hours of the most genuine favoritism and reverential gushing I have ever seenI think what's really funny is that I've been told at least a few times the devs have a "favorite". One friend told me it was Byakuren, and I was personally under the impression the dev team is full of damn lolicons given how much attention the fairies got.Still, I know who you mean, and I loved that they saved Yuuka for right near the very end so it felt like you were actually seeing THROUGH GAMEPLAY why she's got the terrifying reputation she has.>Pic related, my face when fighting her on my NG+ Lunatic run and having to squeeze the optimization out of every choice I make just to make minimal progress>Tfw it took me about two hoursHer spellcards and scenarios were insane too. The finale was just full of a lot of the game's most outstanding moments and that was definitely one of the more unique ones even then, given how simple the whole idea really was.>To be perfectly honest with you, I've never even bothered to play Complete Box/DoSD because none of the new stuff aside from NG+ struck me as very interesting, and the base finale is good enough that any story additions feel excessiveYeah that's fair. I actually didn't think it was that excessive because the end result is basically the same as the original ending, but it still finds a lot of fun ways to make use of that time before then. Granted that's still not a lot. But I guess I'm just biased because even playing the game is something I find very fun. So seeing NG+ sprinkled with all the nice little bonuses was like an extra treat on top of already enjoying something.
>>50501687I bought FMW thanks to this thread. I played it back in the day but it kept crashing on China so i never even finished the first partAt first i was gonna get Minoriko's but since its a western dev i'll wait until its out of EAMoriyaRhythm also looks neat but its not even on sale
>>50506358Fuck yeah! Have fun, anon! Glad to have encouraged your purchase. It's a long one but you'll get a lot out of it.
>yukari's retelling of yuyuko's past in the second FMW game's ending
>>50505102The favorite question is funny since you usually get conflicting reports. Most often people will say Sanae, which is definitely true to some extent, and is corroborated by a music room comment from the first game (since Complete Box has different comments for the first game's tracks) and the fact that she shows up early, joins early, has a significant amount of development, it even made sense to me for most of the game. Then I got to chapter 75, looked at the comments for both music tracks used there (with both composers seemingly just bewildered at Sanbon, phenomenal songs by the way) and it no longer seemed to be an open question. You could technically argue she just isn't much of a traditional character, she has no real arc, no development, no problems to overcome or internal struggle, she's mainly contrast to the main villains since all three of their fights play out along the same lines, it's just that Yuuka makes them and nearly every other character in the series look like delusional amateurs Very bold, honestly.>Her spellcards and scenarios were insane tooGameplay-wise it's also really uncompromising, even on lower difficulties. I imagine many would find it frustrating, or they're a nutcase like me, with a dumb grin plastered on their face while they suspend-spam like a dirty cheat on Normal+ everytime Yuuka decides she doesn't feel like getting hit>I actually didn't think it was that excessiveThat's reasonable. I mostly wasn't fond of what I saw regarding the original characters. They're well portrayed as both sympathetic and obviously wrong-headed, and they get roughed up enough in the regular route. The bits of footage I saw from NG+ and the other route come off as a bit silly and extraneousOn the other hand, it was probably their only option for additional content without overstepping their self-imposed setting/roster boundaries, so I find it difficult to really blame them. Still think they should have added the Getsus as a bonus scenarioMostly I could never convince myself to replay it because the series is really long, even if you skip the text. Might get around to it at some point to try some ludicrous idea or other.
>>50506444>Tfw this was mfw the chapter right before it when the sick Yuyuko breakcore played right at the start>Tfw the change in tone felt completely natural and it's insane how it went from one straight to the other
>>50506470What I think is really funny about that is that if my friend didn't bring up the idea the devs had a "favorite", I wouldn't even have suspected it. You can tell the way characters are treated in FMW are full of care because it never felt like the devs were being lazy about the way they celebrated them. So naturally that means whatever tribute the characters get in FMW are always unique.>The Scarlets get a two-part resolution that extends beyond their respective game>Byakuren is carefully painted with all the reverence her character is expected to have, is one of the best units in the game, and has a fucking Super Saiyan mechanic>All that happened with the entire Komeiji faction>What I said about the fairies>Also what you said about Sanae and YuukaEtc. etc. With all that in mind, I think it's easy to notice when characters stand out in a way that is more noticeable to you, the player. It may not even mean they actually are the devs' favorite. But it most certainly will feel that way when the type and level of attention they get feel like they stand out to you. For example, maybe Yuuka is the devs' favorite. But it could also just be that they really wanted to push the opportunity they were given with the way they happened to set her up. Also to use my own example, the fairies were given a lot of attention. But it could also just be that they kept needing buffs given their canon powerlevels, and were also the perfect, "low-cost" excuse for introducing new antics and mechanics. But I swear the devs are also definitely lolicons lol>The bits of footage I saw from NG+ and the other route come off as a bit silly and extraneousIf you haven't played NG+ I can definitely see it coming off that way. For me, I think it was introduced very nicely because NG+ has a new feature in the menu called Lounge, where the ocs can talk about the events of the chapter you just played. So the introduction to Route B's final boss is extremely gradual. It's built up to very carefully. And I was personally a sucker for another self-indulgent finale, since it's not really intrusive for one. And for two it's used to serve as a proper conclusion to cement the ocs' character development; so it didn't feel cheap IMO, even if it is kinda retreading ground.Though I definitely agree the Getsus should've been added. Hell, so should've Yumemi to be honest. But I can see why they didn't in Complete Box, given how they would've needed to be playable. And ideally should've been during the Makai part instead if they were gonna.

>>50502721>>50503524Can you play with Ran in this thing?I don't usually play these kind of games but will give it a try if I can play with my favorite 2hu
This scene combined with the sad soundtrack turned me into a puddle
>>50507484Every Touhou character from 6-12 is recruitable and usable eventually yes. Ran is a pretty good unit. She's usable sometime around halfway through Complete Box. You can also bring 6 units from the full roster into the NG+ run so you can have Ran from the start then there too if you care.
>>50507424Very understandable. I did the same with Reimu myself as a fellow waifu connoisseur.Youmu's a pretty good unit. Though she won't be permanent until after the Yuyuko part. In my experience the main thing with her is that she takes up a lot of MP. If you can cover for that and give her high ACC/EVD then the Blocking skill comes in really handy. Also speaking of, buy everyone the P-Defeat skill if you can. It's a must-have for how cheap it is yet how much it does.
>>50507224Noted. Thanks for the suggestion. I got it myself just now. This thread also convinced me to get Marisa of Liartop Mountain. This one looks really different and unique so I'm pretty excited to try it soon.
>>50507574When I said earlier they do every character justice and that the emotional moments hit you out of left field, I really meant it. By the way, if that turned you into a puddle, then good luck surviving some of the later chapters.
>>50507663Okay I will. I wonder if I'll have to fight my build, that would be cool
>>50507679I'm actually not sure. If anything stays in tact it's going to be the skills, which aren't *that* huge.>>50506953>Super Robot Wars Z team conflict>NOOOOOOO WHY DID YOU DO THAT>WOULD YOU HAVE DONE BETTER IN OUR POSITION?!>WE WOULDN'T HAVE DONE THAT>Fight without elaboration on what they're actually talking about>Fantasy Maiden Wars team conflict>Dude I know this incident is really serious and needs our full attention right now but we haven't seen you in a while and I really bet my group could kick your group's ass>Dude I was thinking the same thing>Entire chapter is nothing but hot-blooded chaos where both teams are sincerely excited to go all-out against each other just because the opportunity is there>Actually fighting them feels like you're going head-to-head with another protagonist who took their team build as seriously as yours
>>50506621A lot of it definitely comes down to how most of the characters are depicted and what their role is in the broader narrative. It's a testament to the team's dedication that even fairly unimportant characters come off as quite charming, like the comic relief Aki sisters or the designated Yuuka fanclub in Elly and Kurumi. Not all of them are hits necessarily, I for one thought that Nue was a bit one-dimensional, and the Scarlet drama started to test my patience by the third game, but a lot of is still likeable because they never rely exclusively on recycled fandom tropes or simple meme interpretations, nor do they "constrain" themselves to meticulously following canon. That all being said, some characters do occupy a more prominent position in terms of what the team wanted to accomplish, and while some of it will always come down to fortuitous happenstance, other parts definitely seem like the result of deliberate planning. At the same time, definitive evidence won't be falling out of the sky, and it's easy to see someone's reasoning as sheer bias and autism. I can give you an entire host of reasons I consider incontrovertible on why Sanbon has a very high opinion of Yuuka, and a significant part of it is that, while I like the story, it definitely gets a little too "sugary" or naive and optimistic for my taste, and the position they give her in that story feels the farthest removed from those elements, like an irruption of some alien fascination. As you say, it could have just been seizing an opportunity, but not everyone can seize an opportunity so well.Regarding the OCs, it probably feels more natural within its proper context. I suppose part of me just couldn't help but imagine alternative scenarios where they get development along radically different lines. A scenario where Makura actually has a coherent argument in favor of her ideals, for instance. Needless to say, this is speculation that falls outside of FMW's scope. The beatdown they got seemed to integrate the poor sods well enough is all I think.
>>50504949Is there just one? The game on Steam had a subtitle "Dream of the Stray Dreamer" so I assumed it was a sequel or something
>>50508474So FMW is a series of four games that were all developed and released over several years. Scarlet, Mystic, Eternal, and Dream. Complete Box/DoSD is the version that packages them altogether, gives the latest balance changes, and even added some extra content that didn't exist up to Dream. The one you see on Steam is the only fully existing and official English version of the whole series. So tl;dr yes the Steam version is 100% the one you want
>>50508666Alright, good to know.
I fucking love f*ries so much guys
>>50508768#VoteFairy anon is that you
none of the games were on sale so i didn't buy any.
>>50509180You missed the sale this year, I think it was in August? Hopefully there's another one next year, I'll get UDoaLG
Ok based on the reviews for the game ITT I took the plunge and just bought FMW.I have no idea what Super Robot Wars is, but I see that this game is a tactics-grid kinda game, and the only experice I have with such games was with FFTA on the GBA over 20 years ago, which I loved, so I hope this plays similar to that one.
>>50508380That's completely fair. The only thing I have left to say is that while an actual discussion with Makura and Shitone would've been cool in its own right, but I feel like that would've made the contest of wills feel much less "from the heart", so to speak. I also think if nothing else, there's a line from Mehko the chapter before that sums it up beautifully anyway. "The old dream and the new dream are both real". Seeing the best conclusion realized from the heart by want rather than from the mind by reason I thought made for a much more compelling experience. Not to say they couldn't have both but more to say I think that difference highlights the value of what is already there.
>>50509524It makes me happy to know other anons in this thread share my passion for FMW and that it helped to encourage your decision. Hope you have lots of fun, anon! You're in for a super good time. I haven't played FFTA but as someone who's played his fair share of turn-based strategy RPGs, a lot of people claim this is the best ever made gameplay-wise. So I have lots of faith you'll love it too
>>50509656I've been lurking in this thread and was convinced to buy it as well. A few hours in, it is really fun so far. I particularly like that I was able to get Keine from the very beginning, she is my favorite character.
>>50509832
>>50507484also, if you save all your EX points for her, she'll be by far the best unit in the game.
My only exposure to SRW was through the old GBA games a long time ago but I love seeing the little references to it like how Keine's theme sound like a mix of Trombe/Iceman, Meiling's theme being identical to RyuKoOh at the start and Youmu throwing out this Sanger quote
