Walfas is KINO DOGME 2008, we need to RETVRN to tradition.
>>
>>50550523
What was even the deal with this fanfic? I have heard a lot of shit about it over the years but never any actual rundown on what it's about or why it sucks.
>>
>>50553931
Thanks for bumping a kuso thead, faggot.
Quick rundown, it's a gratuitous and obnoxiously written anti-fan fiction targeted a demographic of touhou fan works that barely exists, the writing comes across as the creator patting himself on the back for being self aware (while not actually being self aware in the slightest), the character writing is very bad and the story often uses things like rape and abortion for cheap shock value. It's a case of "ironically bad writing is still bad writing". Also walfas fics are always ugly and lazy shit.
Best just to leave this shit to be forgotten, it deserves nothing more.
>>
>>50554038
Alright then, I'll sage.
>>
>>50554038
It's still closer to canon Touhou than 99% of doujins so I must be respected by default.

I'd take a Tomoki Tomonori doujin over it anyday

I always just assumed the other gappys were just even bigger POS. Anyway I think the rape in this made sense, as it was to show what the average weak person would do drunk off power. I am curious what you might suggest they do otherwise? I am on ep 13 now, and the protag is dislikeable, but shows a couple moments of still being somewhat moral, like in the incident the sdm incident . I enjoy that most characters hate his guts too, so it's not much of an author self glaze fanfic either.
>>
even though it's incredibly unlikely it was I will always find it amusing how ULiL felt like a direct response to Diamond in the Rough and the "Gappy Stu" concept (even though as anon points out >>50554038 they're like a drop in the ocean compared to every other touhou fanwork in existence)
just like how I find 17.5 and CDS amusing for feeling like responses to Imperfect Metamorphosis

What the hell was Spaz even parodying? The "OP self-insert outsider who makes Gensokyo his bitch" fan fiction that supposedly polluted the fandom during the time he created this is completely barren. You'd have to actively search for that niche shit.
>>
>>50557038
I definitely think there was a sort of sub-fandom bubble among western Touhou fanfiction writers at the time that caused them to think their own tropes were more common among the broader Touhou fanbase when it was just them, I brought it up earlier but this is 100% why IM turned out the way it did

I recall a fair share of people "fantasizing" about it and I ran into handful of fics that was "op outsider in gensokyo" but it was probably a case of someone seeing those and deciding that they should make some critique of it or whatever, the internet used to feel bigger than it actually was

a theory of mine I've been working for a while that explains this phenomenon quite well is that the Touhou fanbase is sort of split into two (maybe three layers)

Sunlight layer fans
-quite literally still don't really fully understand what Touhou is and can't honestly really be considered fans. But they like the music or a couple popular flash MVs and get 100% of their info about the lore and series from people in youtube comments. They will either lose interest in Touhou or gain more interest progressing deeper into the next layer

Twilight layer fans
-finally ended up learning what Touhou is (that being a doujin / indie multi-media franchise branching off a mainline bullet hell game series) they know the plots of the games, they've likely also played a couple too and they know a sort of summary of each 2hu character too. They've also read the printworks but usually skipped CiLR & SoPM for some reason, they love the music and the various remixes and arranges people have done. They have consumed a large variety of fanmade Touhou content and doujin work... infact maybe a little too much
The big distinction between fans in this layer and fans of the deeper layer is that they tend to be bigger fans of the Touhou fanbase than Touhou itself, while they have played the games there's a huge chance they haven't bothered to read the dialogue to get the characterization right and a huge huge chance they've completely overlooked the fightans too despite them being very rich lore sources for the characters, their abilities and interactions

It's the fans of this layer that tend to be the bulk of western fanfiction authors and the central reason why so many of their stories feel so off as they actually at the end of the day don't actually know Touhou and so much of their view on Touhou has been from viewing the thousands of reinterpretive lenses of other authors from fanworks.

Midnight Layer fans
-what most of us on /jp/ are at this point the fans who've grown quite obsessed with Touhou and dug deeper and came to truly truly love the setting and characters (not to say they've lost love for the fanworks to the contrary their love and appreciation has expanded)
Unlike twilight layer fans they actually dig deeper into learning stuff like the mythological inspirations behind Touhou characters and world elements along with reading various ZUN interviews about the behind the scenes inspirations and things like the music notes. Something you'll come to realize about this layer is that there is so much left unsaid but easily inferred in the world of Touhou once you know these inspirations and word of ZUN tidbits
Midnight layer fans also actually look into the fightans / all games treating them as the important 1st hand lore sources that they are
to put it simply these fans know the characters and setting and are massive weebs
>>
>>50557232
The kind of people who are bigger fans of the fanbase than the original stuff always annoy me to some extent.

>and a huge huge chance they've completely overlooked the fightans too despite them being very rich lore sources for the characters, their abilities and interactions
This is unironically the gatekeepers' faults who for the longest time devalued Twilight Frontier's works as glorified fangames and spent years being toxic toward its presence and lumping in the fighting game fans with secondaries.

I'll take any hentai that actually has the characters act like they are in character.
>>
>>50557088
>>50557038
It was absolutely a thing in the western Touhou fanbase. I don't think anybody was delusional enough to think it was a big thing outside of it though. But, yeah, the only other trope that came close in popularity was doing retellings of Touhou (Typically the PC-98 games cause they never got far enough) and yuri shipping.

Arguably though, it's a pretty common mindset even if actual fanwork is mostly limited to western fanfics. You can see it all the time in waifuthreads and "What would you do in gensokyo?" threads?

>>50557232
You are mostly correct but I'll add that the western fanbase has always been in kind of a weird place. It's very much it's own thing but also much more subservient to Japanese fans and whatever weird stupid memes they pick up.
>>
>>50557811
That's like 99% of the fanbase.

Frankly, I think most people just can't handle canon. It's too, dare I say, Grimdark for them. Not to say it is Grimdark, but it's darker than fanon.
>>
>>50558365
Maybe if your name is Themilo450
>>
>>50558365
Touhou is safedark and has been since ZUN tried to scrub Dolls of Pseudo-Paradise from circulation. All the grim stuff with consequence happened offscreen and now we can't have so much as an immortal fairy die anymore. We're left with a setting that taken at face value, is more sanitized than Shonen meant for children.
>>
>>50554076
>so I must be respected by default.
Touhou lorediscussion if it were honest...

>>50557232
>but usually skipped CiLR & SoPM for some reason,
I feel like everything that's just written gets usually skipped, except maybe PMiSS. Also most people feel like get the book info second hand or out of context.

>what most of us on /jp/ are at this point
idk anon...
I'm sometimes not sure if people even go more to ZUN interviews than the works themselves. Or if sometimes people think that myth has more importance than the canon, regarding Touhou canon.
And sometimes it feels as if people got the lore from someone else retelling the lore and so on...
>>50557895
I thought it was mostly because of people not caring much about decimals(most notable in fighters because they have the most lore) and because of people intimidated by thinking they have to learn another hard game genre.

>>50558338
I've seen (over the years) quite a bunch of posts about killing/raping characters and/or destroying Gensokyo. There are probably still quite a bunch.
I guess the feelings are kinda there and maybe even in Japan seeing that power fantasy isekais are a thing.

>>50558365
Also to dark in the sense of the reader being in the dark. Good luck discussing on the internet a story where the author doesn't feel the need to specify when characters lie, refuses to elaborate and uses a bunch of metaphors and puns which might be either completely discarded by some people or taken completely literally by others.
It all being translated, adds some extra trouble. I wanted to say especially being a fantranslation but official translations also have their own issues and sometimes are also done without context or clarifying stuff with the original writer.

>>50558806
idk, lines like this would feel a bit off in a shonen:
>How many times do I have to say it,
>nobody is going to care if you commit suicide.
>Think it over.
But then again some shonen have murder everywhere and can get pretty edgy. At least in the past, idk about modern stuff.
>>
>>50558913
Nah usually they'll have read something like the three fairies manga and SSiB but there's a good chance things like WaHH and FS just get summarized. PMiSS and Bohemian Archive tend to be read
>idk anon...
yeah I was considering splitting the categories into another "Abyss layer" maybe I'm too deep in the touhole I couldn't tell /jp/ isn't that fried yet
>people not caring much about decimals / intimidated by thinking they have to learn another hard game genre.
honestly that is the real reason people skipped the decimals / fightans. They really complete the whole picture

I have another thing to add, there's also a pretty good chance Twilight layer fans are the types to watch the anime adaptations and never read the og VNs. Not at all relevant to Touhou but it definitely gives you some more insight

Sorry, anon, years of shit breaking canon left me jaded.

>I guess the feelings are kinda there and maybe even in Japan seeing that power fantasy isekais are a thing.
I'm surprised it isn't more popular in Japan, frankly. I guess nobody wants to push ZUN by releasing "I was reincarnated as the villainess in Gensokyo?!!! How the weakest Danmaku formation managed to become the strongest by level grinding fairies!"

>Good luck discussing on the internet a story where the author doesn't feel the need to specify when characters lie, refuses to elaborate and uses a bunch of metaphors and puns which might be either completely discarded by some people or taken completely literally by others.
It's honestly LESS of a issue in fan games which is why I wish more fangames and fan doujins had the spine to actually stick up for their theories no matter how out there.

>It all being translated, adds some extra trouble. I wanted to say especially being a fantranslation but official translations also have their own issues and sometimes are also done without context or clarifying stuff with the original writer.
It used to be even worse, frankly. Though I still miss "Bitch, get out of the way".

>Nah usually they'll have read something like the three fairies manga and SSiB
Badly worded on my part: I meant that books get skipped quite a lot. Which makes sense since manga is easier to get into I guess
>but there's a good chance things like WaHH and FS just get summarized
Now that you mention it. Yeah, it feels like that. Bohemian, I'm not sure, it feels as if people had read it but a long time ago, partially or an old translation sometimes.
Sometimes it feels like people here get their lore just from discussion here and images like manga pages out of context. I don't know if it's much better elsewhere

>yeah I was considering splitting the categories into another "Abyss layer" maybe I'm too deep in the touhole I couldn't tell /jp/ isn't that fried yet
I mean it can always be split into more cases, and sometimes people choose are less methodical and might start to read(or pretend to read) whatever mangas where coming out when they decided to get into Touhou and so on... But around 80% people seem to go by your classification, probs

>Twilight layer fans are the types to watch the anime adaptations and never read the og VNs
Ah yes, the animes which should work as an introduction, could understand people not going to the original work if they didn't like the anime. But idk I guess 2much text kinda filters people (yet more people than I think seem to read fanfics for whatever reason)

>>50562723
>Sorry, anon,
No prob, it's funny. (Not really lorediscussion if you're being that polite lol)
> years of shit breaking canon left me jaded.
welcome to a fandom(lunatic difficulty)

>I'm surprised it isn't more popular in Japan
To get translated it needs to have a certain popularity with Japanese people and then with people that can translate it for it to reach us.
I think most plots that would end up there would end up with writers saying "I might as well make it porn at this point", but not sure.
Only thing I can think of guy getting "isekaid" in Gensokyo would be "The Iron of Yin and Yang" as the booru calls it. Not sure how much it counts as it's a FFXI character based on a futaba poster or whatever nor am I sure what the plot is about

>It's honestly LESS of a issue in fan games
I mean, they add what isn't in the official stuff and most writers like to get their point across instead of gesturing vaguely. So it makes sense.

>I wish more fangames and fan doujins had the spine to actually stick up for their theories no matter how out there.
>of shit breaking canon
Huh, this seems oddly contradictory imo

>It used to be even worse, frankly.
I mean, I guess now people at least called out when some translators actually feel like they missed the main verb of a sentence and rephrase it to push some narrative or whatever.
>Though I still miss "Bitch, get out of the way".
I wanted to say that's a non-issue unless people get retarded over the specific words and such, but seeing how people can't understand that their reading a translated work and might start talking about the specific wording used by a character in English... idk what's better honestly.
>>
>>50566980
>welcome to a fandom(lunatic difficulty)
Been here for years and honestly just sick of it. At least it helped me finally get my feelings for Touhou in order.

>To get translated it needs to have a certain popularity with Japanese people and then with people that can translate it for it to reach us.
True. Though I still imagine if somebody tried writing it it would get noticed here, regardless of popularity. At least some people in the western Touhou fandom can speak Japanese and hang out around Japanese forums.

>Huh, this seems oddly contradictory imo
Eh... sort off? To me it's mostly the difference between actually breaking canon and just having a lot of faith in your theory. Like, as a example, revealing Sakuya's backstory in a fangame isn't breaking canon since we don't know her canon backstory. Meanwhile, changing her relationship with Meiling or Patchouli to be very close IS breaking canon.

>idk what's better honestly.
A faithful translation, probably. Though like I said I do enjoy weirder and more out there translations. If nothing else you can have multiple translations nowadays as long as people understand which one is more accurate and which one is trying to be funny first and forest.
