Mahiru's Third Trial

Welcome to MILGRAM!

>TL;DR
Anime Music Video project where us, the viewers, vote on the characters' fate and how the plot progresses.

>What is this shit?
MILGRAM is a Japanese mixed-media music project by DECO*27 and Takuya Yamanaka. It's a prison-based psychological experiment with 10 "murderers", where the audience (you) acts as the jury through the warden Es. You listen to music videos (trials) made from each prisoner's memories and emotions, read the supplementary materials, and decide whether they can be forgiven for their crime or not (INNOCENT or GUILTY).

>Where to start?
It's all free on youtube and the total length is between 1 to 2 hours.
Go to https://www.youtube.com/@MilgramOfficial and watch the videos from oldest to newest.
You can ignore covers and livestreams.
Supplemental material, such as pre-Trial interviews between Es (your character) and the prisoner, has fully subbed TLs on youtube, just look it up.
Watch out for spoilers!

>How do I vote?
After a Trial drops, visit https://milgram.jp/judge where global voting for the prisoner's verdict will be open for you to vote ONCE A DAY for a rather long period of time

>Where are we now?
We're currently on the third round of Trials, with the trial for the 5th prisoner, Mahiru https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkBQG5x5wCM

Safe to say no one predicted the forest and rat imagery to be actually fucking true and not just symbolism, holy shit

Damn...

It feels a bit out there imo, I don't think that two adults running away from their parents is a crime in modern Japan that requires people to live innawoods while evading the police.
But I'll miss Mahiru, both her songs were great, I wish she could've gotten a third.
>>
Goodnight, sweet princess
I'll miss you dearly

>>50576977
I think the implication here is that her family is that powerful
The story IS a bit out there, and a very weird decision to take when the perfectly good abuse narrative is perfectly laid out, but I guess they thought it was too tame or wanted to make it more interesting?
There's a screenshot on twitter, which I'm not sure if it's from her interrogation or a SS from the intro MV, but it has a pic of the cave, so at least they always planned it.
It is interesting, though, I'll admit
>>
>>50576977
Would be considered possible kidnapping
>>
>>50577060
Twitter is shit, but the jokes about the symbolism in every prisoner's MV being literal keep sending me.
>"Oh, ig there was an abandoned carousel in the mountain."
>"Kazui ate a pigeon in front of his wife and she stepped backwards and fell off the balcony."
>"Can't believe Muu is actually a sentient bug."
>>
>>50577061
She is of age and obviously wanted to be with him so I doubt it. I guess you can go with the powerful traditional family angle like >>50577060 mentioned but I still found it pretty wild.
Definitely up there with Shidou killing the truck driver for moments I'd have never guessed
>>
>>50577082
I've said this before, but not knowing Shidou's crime works for his story.
Shidou can be stone cold if need be, and I stand by the fact he would've butchered Kotoko had the chance presented itself. Him not even thinking about the guy he actually killed just goes to show how little he thought of him compared to the actual guilt he feels. His is a very interesting character study.
Mahiru's case falls a bit flat because the entire point was how abusive/insane she really was under her rose-colored glasses, but they went a route similar to Yuno where the agency of her crime doesn't fall on her directly, which wasn't a good choice imo. Still gives a lot to think about, though.

all this makes me wonder what they've got prepared for Kazui and Amane
>>
>>50577115
Kazui and Amane's cases seem pretty clear, but atp I can see them pulling a fast one on us, either with the actual reason behind Kazui's wife's suicide (he promised her baby, the bartender is her brother, some other bullshit) or how Amane killed her mom (she pushed her, she slipped, something weird like that)
>>
>>50577156
It's not like every case had a twist, Yuno and Mu were pretty much exactly what people had already guessed.
>>
>>50577169
Yuno specifically has a very weird conclusion because the abortion wasn't even intentional. she failed to commit suicide and lost the baby instead, which removes her agency and any pretense of a murder.
As for Muu, the crime is obvious but the report and later QnA gave new info, like the fact she actually intended to kill Rei and it wasn't an argument gone wrong, or the fact Muu is genuinely that retarded that she thought that's how the world should work

I think it's a pitfall of japanese writing where they take character actions tot he extreme/make them very on the nose reflections of their ideologies or something of the sort

The table theory is still alive, with the left side being the ones who directly killed another person and the right side being that caused death indirectly
>>
>>50577390
wait, then how tf do you explain kotoko???
>>
>>50577442
A lot of theories about her involve her reckless actions causing the little girl in her videos to die
>>
>>50577460
ah yeah remember those
I mean, with shidou, I get the crime being different, but Kotoko is reaching a bit too far (still fits the narrative though)
>>
>>50577466
I think it'd be a neat way to explain why she is obsessed with justice, since her failure caused an innocent to die. And having her crime being killing a random kidnapper would be pretty lame as well.
>>
>>50577502
Agreed, hence why I said it fits the narrative
she's actually the one in the biggest need of a twist because she's getting a big ass 90%+ guilty vote otherwise

I did when it first came out, but was cowed into the majority interpretation because nobody else thought it. But why else would that supposed metaphoric imagery mimic her photos in Undercover? I thought that they had gotten lost in the mountains at Mahiru's suggestion to go there, which is why his death was considered "her fault". I had no idea about her family and pre-selected fiance, though. That came out of nowhere.

>>50577115
Yamanaka doesn't write according to a narrative he wants to sell, but rather people he wants to explore. Basically, he starts by imagining a certain kind of person and the environment they must have grown up in to do the things they did and end up in the situation they end up in. Every person alive today has to live in today's society, so he tries to explore the types of people who have difficulty doing just that in both Milgram and especially Caligula.
>>
>>50577540
for the mahiru thing, yeah, that makes sense. I wasn't diving deep into hr case since it seemed obvious, but the thing we got makes sense. We probably would've learned about the fiance had she gotten an inno verdict in T1

as for yamanaka, I don't mind his characters, but rather, Mahiru feels too one-note? I get that her whole thing is being in love for the sake of love, but she has no personality besides that would be my only criticism (I still love her to death though). Like, Yuno is a distant child, but you can see some of her other facets here and there. I'm just saying they could've given her a more fleshed out personality, but ig that's the result of voting.
>>
>>50577215
Yuno's case wasn't unusual at all in the context of Milgram but people keep getting stuck on the idea that she needs to have intent or agency to be counted as murder when all Milgram has done is assign blame to the prisoners for someone else's life ending. Much like how Fuuta doxxed the teenager without intending for her to kill herself or Mahiru's boyfriend committed suicide in the middle of their agreed elopement, Yuno's faint and fall on the abandoned stairwell is treated as ending her unborn child's life, even if she didn't intend to do it when it happened.
>>
>>50577082
I didn't say the male kidnapped the female.
>>
>>50576958
Good night sweet princess. She did nothing wrong, literally and unironically. Mahiru is definitely the purest of the Milgram prisoners. Not a single cell in her body is capable of malice.

Fuuta joins Yuno with an innocent verdict. Momentum is turning on Muu. She was at over 60% innocent before. Can she hold on to the innocent lead until her judgment?

While we mourn Mappi's death, here's a minigram as a tribute so we can remember what a pure soul she was and commemorate her life.
