I've gone to Japan every year for the past 8 years and I am seriously thinking of not going this year. I see a lot of people compare it to immigrants in the US, though the comparison doesn’t work that well imo. Japan is a homogenous country while the US has a lot of immigrant communities that make it more common for them to live day to day with their native language. A lot of immigrants that come to the US often don’t have the same financial freedom and educational opportunities that Silvie has to improve her language skills as well, their starting point is quite different. I say this as a POC with immigrant parents in the US as well. That said, I do have friends like Silvie in Tokyo that don’t bother to learn Japanese at all and are absolutely still able to live there just because it’s Tokyo. It will be interesting to see how it is if her new neighborhood is really rural.
