wow i just tested making a card with animated avif and it's extremely efficient, you can get a few seconds of video for like 50kb of space and it works just fine with ankii remember back in the day trying mp4 and all that shit and it all didn't integrate well but now it's differenti'll integrate this into the automated workflow of mpv-subtitleminer and then you get real ass moving anime cards, i wish i had this earlier in my japanese learning career, would have been so coolhttps://streamable.com/b6bc11

Is watching anime without subtitles partially a skill in itself that you develop from doing it more often, or is it entirely a matter of just how much vocabulary you know?
>>50610258Trip's still working fine ദ്ദിᗜ⩊ᗜ >>50610268Mostly vocabulary.
>>50610268ive definitely had a lot of times where i couldnt hear what was said despite knowing all the words being able to understand as soon as i saw the jsubs
>>50610129progress is beautiful
>>50610268nah it's like 90/10 max essentially on a cognitive linguistic level there's no such thing as listening ability, all speech signals are noisy and decoded by language knowledge and if you can't "hear" something you probably just didn't know it that well, the question is whether listening without jsubs reinforces the knowledge differently (as it's initially harder your brain has to work more and shifts its inner workings around to account for it) so you should definitely listen without jsubs but it should never be a priority if you can also mine especially if you're still lacking vocab
>>50610129want to fuck that lil goblin aoi yuki so bad
>>50610314i feel like its really easy with jsubs to just end up reading the text and not paying attention to the audio at all
blue snow?
wait why did she get so much uglier than i remember
>>50610328i think if you're at the point where you do that that's just a sign of a lack of language knowledge and you needing that reinforcement because the japanese just hasn't become second nature yet, but if you do that for 1000 hours you'll naturally look at the subs far less even if you never turn them off just because you know it's mirroring what you're hearing and you'll just hear it at some point, mostly at least, i mean there's also things i catch in my native language with subs that i don't without but those cases aren't the pointthat said if you're just watching stuff you're interested in naturally you'll do plenty of no subs watching cuz there's enough shows without any jp subs
>>50610333Aoi based :D
if it werent for jp subs i would have quit within the first year or two cause i wasnt as interested in manga at the time and there is 0 chance i would have braved whitenoising for years on end. thanks mr jp subs.
>>50610345yep true
>>50610292Probably because you watch with English subs lol
jamal said subs are for ngmis
>>50610361Toromi*
>>50610339idk i think you are kinda underminding how important knowing what the phrases and words sound like hearing something many times you eventually become able to deduce what is being said just from the tone and the few parts you can hear over the background noise or whateverits like how you can hear what people are saying in the other room despite not hearing any of it clearly at allsure knowledge from reading and subbed content can also help but there is still a significant skillset in listening by itselfit just only really presents itself when you are doing pure listening
I was reading a book about Japan. I was on the session about Shinto and the arrival of Buddhism to Japan. There's a map that shows buddhist temples and shinto shrines, and it shows a shinto shrine in Munakata which is secret. As I researched about this I discovered about Munakata Taisha, which are three shinto shrines in the city, one of which is in Okinoshima island called Okitsu-gū. This shrine and the island are very off limits. Reading more about it I've found an article with an interview with one of the priests, which says"Like many things about Okinoshima, its history is elusive. The island belongs to a system of three Shinto shrines, together called the Munakata Taisha. They are mentioned in the Nihon Shoki, a historical record of Japan completed in the year 720.“So we know for sure that around that time the shrine was already here,” Suzuki [the priest] said. “But before that, we don’t know anything.” "The book also explains about Nihon Shoki and the Kojiki which are the oldest registers of Japan history. So maybe the Okitsu-gū is this secret shrine the book talks about. Interesting to know there's a shrine so old people don't even remember it's origin. Do you know anything else about this or other interesting things? >>50610377i believe the human brain is very similar across all non disabled people when it comes to language learning
>>50610369i think you're just making false conclusions cuz you think the concept of a "listening skill" is intuitive and that's how we're kinda taught languages work implicitly often but really it's mostly language knowledge and those kind of skills are just language knowledge, of course if the part of your brain to process speech signals is damaged you won't hear either way but it's not something that's trained, you have it or it's impaired it's not a muscle to improve or somethingthe crucial thing we have to be aware of is how language knowledge and familiarity actually works, that is that you don't acquire something by listening so something once, for it to become second nature you'll have to hear it many many time in many different contexts and that's years of work and if you've learned japanese for 1-2 years and struggle understanding everything with jp subs off it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking "my listening skill is not good enough" but the reality is you've just not had enough time interacting with japanese where it's intuitive enough (i.e. your language knowledge is good enough) to efficiently work with that information
>>50610390regardless of the veracity of that claim you don't fall into that category since you're so stupid it's basically a disability >>50610392he just basically said that not only is n=1 enough to make sweeping conclusions but that n being himself with all the biases that entails is enough. whats even the point of trying to explain anything to someone this fucking dumb
>>50610392i mean yea i definitely agree that subbed content and reading can make it easier to build the listening skill later but my point is no amount of reading will teach you what japanese sounds like and knowing what it sounds like is often key to inferring what was said in noisy conditions>>50610397tfw just smart enough to slip through the system without ending up with a comfy special ed neetbux life
this nigga thinks you put jp subs on and turn off the audio
>>50610405the only issue is initial reading without listening before you know how the language sounds but jp subbed content takes care of that
とろとろの実 is closer to being correct, but both sides are partially misframing the issue.QM is right about one core point: there is no freestanding, content-independent “listening skill” in the way people imagine a trainable muscle. Speech perception is fundamentally top-down probabilistic inference. The acoustic signal is massively underspecified, noisy, and ambiguous; comprehension is driven primarily by lexical representations, phonological categories, and syntactic expectations already stored in long-term memory. If you do not know the word or construction, you cannot “hear” it in any meaningful sense. This is well-established in psycholinguistics and speech perception theory.Where QM is wrong is in claiming that the auditory side is not trainable or that it is merely “having it or being impaired.” That is false. What とろとろの実 is gesturing at—clumsily but correctly—is perceptual attunement and phonetic category learning. Human listeners adapt their auditory cortex to the statistical structure of a language’s sound system through exposure. This includes learning phoneme boundaries, allophonic variation, coarticulation patterns, prosody, and reduction phenomena. Reading cannot give you that. Subtitles can support it, but they do not substitute for it.The “hearing people in the other room” example is not mystical listening skill; it is Bayesian inference under uncertainty. You recover meaning by combining partial acoustic cues with prior linguistic knowledge and contextual priors. However, to do that efficiently in Japanese, you must have internalized what Japanese sounds like at a fine-grained level. That internalization is experience-dependent and improves with listening, especially under degraded conditions. This is why learners who read heavily but listen little often have brittle comprehension once subtitles disappear. The clean resolution is this: listening ability is not separate from language knowledge, but some components of language knowledge are modality-specific and only form through auditory exposure. Vocabulary and grammar are necessary but not sufficient; phonological representations must be robust. Pure listening is where those representations are stress-tested and refined. Therefore, listening without subtitles is not magic, not optional, and not primary at early stages—but it does train something real once you have enough lexical mass to anchor perception. In short, QM is right that “my listening sucks” usually means “my Japanese isn’t automatized yet.” とろとろの実 is right that no amount of reading alone will ever make spoken Japanese sound transparent. The error is pretending those claims are incompatible.
grok its jp subbed anime which is listening + reading not just reading try again please
>>50610410thats not what im saying but theres a reason why all those maltards with years of esubbed anime never learn japanese from itobviously less extreme but still
>>50610426Fair correction. With JP subtitles, the picture shifts, but the conclusion only narrows, it does not flip.QM’s claim still overreaches. Even with audio-text alignment, listening is not reducible to abstract language knowledge alone. What JP subs give you is orthographic anchoring: you bind a spoken token to a written form. That accelerates lexical consolidation and phonological mapping, but it does not fully train online auditory parsing. Real speech arrives temporally, vanishes, overlaps with music and effects, and undergoes phonetic reduction. Reading while listening offloads uncertainty onto vision. You are not forced to resolve the signal in real time.とろとろの実 is correct that JP subs can induce attentional capture toward text, which weakens auditory uptake. Eye-tracking studies show this reliably. When the written form is available, the brain preferentially trusts it over the acoustic signal. This produces weaker acoustic category sharpening and poorer performance under noisy or subtitle-absent conditions later. The fact that the text is Japanese rather than English does not change this mechanism; it only avoids semantic mistranslation. The precise distinction QM misses is between knowledge acquisition and perceptual automatization. JP-subbed anime is excellent for acquiring and stabilizing representations, but it is suboptimal for forcing bottom-up segmentation and rapid phonological decoding. Those processes improve when the listener must rely on sound alone. They are still language knowledge, but they are knowledge instantiated in auditory circuits rather than symbolic ones.So the corrected verdict is this:JP-subbed listening is not “just reading,” and it does meaningfully support listening development. However, it still partially masks deficits in temporal speech processing, which only reveal themselves in unsubbed or noisy conditions. QM is right that nothing mystical is being trained. とろとろの実 is right that something real is being undertrained when subs are always present.

>>50609709I also can’t speak much Japanese. Living in a major city in Japan, there are so many people who speak English and every service I need (doctors, dentists, hair/nail salon, veterinarian, etc) can be found easily with English speaking providers. I use English all day at work, and all of my friends speak English. I’m not good at self-studying so I haven’t made much progress, but I am starting a class next month. I can’t afford to go to regular language schools and because I work full time, I don’t have the time, either.

>>50609709sunk cost fallacy. I liked anime in high school, but didn't know any japanese people. I was in the really advanced math classes here in the US, so all my classmates were chinese, so I stopped learning japanese and learned mandarin. fast forward to university, tried to get a job in china to actually use my mandarin, job market was too difficult. worked in the US for a while, made friends who were also into anime even though I hadnt watched in years. rekindled my interest. then the pandemic happened and I guess moving to japan to work as a foreigner is a nightmare so my japanese is kind of useless. I also don't like anime anymore. feels weird, I took the JLPT last year randomly, got an almost perfect on the N2 which means I suck ass at japanese but I know enough to where I feel as though I should at least get N1 which puts me on the same level as a middle schooler. I know tens of thousands of kanji though from mandarin, in which I am actually fluent.I hate the japanese and hate most things about japan but I'm like a battered wife and keep going back for more. the one thing I do like is old japanese artwork. I'd like to read the tale of genji (I know it's in modern form because classical japanese is difficult as fuck) or something, I guess. idk. I keep thinking I should just abandon the language entirely.on the other hand, I think it's amusing how japanese language learning has the best tools and such, but they can be adapted for other languages. thinking of learning russian, because even though I have no intention of moving to russia, I've met a lot of russians here in the US and in china and it would be nice to speak to them in russian.

what was that retarded excuse the mod used? that there were 0 reports in the queue and that's why they don't do anything about mlen?
Sometimes other people will make sweeping value judgements about others that make it seem like you're worthless if you can't meet the same criteria that they meet but what they're really trying to do is validate themselves by placing you below them and no one gets to decide what your life is worth or what you have to do with it
>>50614169thanks man. qm's post really had me feeling down before i read yours.
Was it really an excuse? Sounded to me like he just didn't care kek
