Whose common portrayal is the most divorced from their actual character? Including things that everyone knows are just jokes it would obviously be Sanae, but for genuinely misunderstanding the character I'm not sure. Kasen, Ran, Eiki, Koishi, and Suika all spring to mind.

Aunn. She's almost always depicted as Reimu's dog in fan works, as a HECKIN WOOFERINO, if you will. She's nothing but a good-natured little doggo, who chases butterflies and licks Reimu's cheek when given headpats. While it's true that she has a very loyal and good-spirited nature towards Reimu and other humans, she's not all that. It's more like she's Reimu's co-worker as the shrine's guardian, rather than straight-up being Reimu's pet / servant like Orin and Okuu are to Satori. She does her own things quite a lot, and is shown to act independently, like in UDoALG and WaHH. Reimu does seem to order Aunn around like she's her master, like in UDoALG, but it's not like she can't act on her own.Moreover, she's actually quite intelligent. She managed to run an accounting and sales spy operation on behalf of Kasen to track what kinds of items festival visitors bought. There are also signs that she can be quite a jackass towards people. She very smugly talked down to Cirno and basically gave Aya the middle finger in HSiFS. In UDoALG, she outright calls Sanae a "unreasonable shrine maiden that Gensokyo is famous for".tldr: Aunn is not really Reimu's heckin wooferino, but a friendly colleague guarding the shrine.

With that said, it's still Touhou so she is still kind of a cocky asshole. She would be the jerk of the team in any other setting but in Gensokyo she's mother Theresa.

It's funny how every SDM character gets explored by the fans, except one of the most popular one. Only source of drama that gets used is Sakuya dying before all the others, but by the way things are, I wouldn't be surprised if this odd woman outlasts the land itself.
