>gameplay isn't the top priority for a video game's community
>>50669648Yes. Unironically. EoSD's gameplay sucks donkey dick. I only like it because I want to break Flandre's hymen.
>>50669648Would you play Touhou if there was no music in the game? If there were no girls? No backgrounds? No story, no personalities, however weak you might think they are or not? If Touhou was just a generic bullet hell game, would you play it? I wouldn't. The gameplay itself isn't the main attraction about Touhou.
>>50669736Yes, I absolutely would. I love bullet hells for their gameplay.
>>50669648I have sailed and searched the seven seas and still couldn't find the person OP is quoting
>>50669736I got into Touhou because of all those things, but I now stay with Touhou pretty much just because of the gameplay.
>>50669765All the other elements still serve to make up the experience whole and I enjoy them as much as ever of course, but people who claim that the gameplay is secondary just come off as bitter over simply not being able to enjoy shmups. That's fine if it's not your genre, but it doesn't stop Touhou from having genuinely great gameplay in most of its entries. There wouldn't be people who spend hundreds, up to thousands of hours grinding clears/score/whatever if they just liked the music and got off to the characters. That being said, EoSD is kind of lame, yeah.
>>50669765I'm pretty much the same. One thing that's pretty cool is after playing all these other shmups, I can recognize and appreciate differences between them. I would say that's kind of the appeal of Touhou, it just does it's own thing.Well, that and the fanworks are pretty big part of the appeal for most as well.
>>50669648The porn is.
EoSD is the kind of game you come to appreciate once you've gone through the rest. I wouldn't say it's in the highest tier of Touhou games, probably a low A or high B. Don't care for a lot of the game's soundtrack (sacrilegious, I know) but it has some nice bullet dodging with sprinkles of RNG and later into the series you'll find a lot of gimmicks let you sort of work around dodging much meaner patterns. I still liked WBaWC and UM and I loved FW. This is all to say that EoSD is pretty "boring" in a sense, seeing as there's no gimmick to grind in the early stages like in LoLK or DDC, but I consider EoSD a "pseudo PC-98" game. Just like those, there's no visible hitbox, and the game serves as a transition to Windows. I happen to prefer MS as a game.TL;DR EoSD is decent fun once you recognize why, but it still isn't the peak of the series. Of course if one dislikes the gameplay of shmups but claims to be a Touhou fan I will look at them differently.
EoSD is my favorite game in the series and by far the one I return to most, mostly because of the gameplay. I do admit familiarity is a major factor though.I like that scoring doesn't involve a ton of weird bullshit like meter management. Graze is a god tier mechanic so it gets a pass for modifying your score at the end of spellcards, and really isn't complicated at all anyway. Everything else about score is clear cut with enough risk/reward to be satisfying while still feeling like a shmup. I respect the inventiveness of later games but EoSD has the right balance that lets me focus on the bullets and core game, to me the scoring systems of later games detract from the...I guess purity, for lack of a better word, of playing a shmup. This anon >>50669950 brings up a good point about the amount of RNG in the game. It keeps things interesting but almost never feels like bullshit. Knowing 'the solution' isn't enough, you always have to play the game. This is true for almost all of the series but the balance of it in EoSD feels right to me.With 20 games plus spinoffs I totally understand the desire to shake things up and add new mechanics and rules in new games, for each new game to have a gimmick of some sort. But I really, really like EoSD for just being the basics and doing them well. Rather than feeling simple, it feels to me like the game doesn't have the bothersome clutter that shows up elsewhere. I mentioned this about scoring but many games do it even with just 1cc gameplay stuff (UFO for example). If I spent more time with MS I could end up liking that one more, or less, I'd have to spend more time with it to know. That's the only one I'd expect to ever topple EoSD for me though, since the two are rather similar. And with EoSD I have a personal connection and history to the game, so that isn't likely.
>he came here from the /vr/ thread
>>50669648schmups require a certain kind of autism as a skill based high focus game. you play the games if you enjoy the thrill of beating something hard and improving. unless you're playing on easy or very good you probably won't even be able to enjoy the overall aesthetics of everything, and most of the music and art from in game doesn't even match the fan made stuff anyways.
>>50669736would play without music story and presonalitywouldn't without girls and backgrounds
>>50671540>backgroundsThe backgrounds are just random pictures zun found though...
>>50669736What do you think is a generic bullet hell?Because music is an important part of any bullet hell
>>50671577I'm sure he means stage backgrounds, not spells.
>>50669736Touhou but it's just a hitbox dodging bullets would probably be fun but awkward. Also what do you mean by generic bullet hell? They all pretty much have at least some attempt at music and backgrounds and all that other stuff. Touhou is not the only shmup with girls in it.
>>50669648I play Souls game purely for their aesthetic and vibes.
>>50674381Right, to me generic shmup means no focus mechanic and generic military hardware for the player and enemies.I like the genre though so even generic shmups are usually fun so long as they're not an absolute cakewalk.
>>50673367Wut?! Haven't seen anyone saying this in a long time. Too long...Thx Anon, really. But I guess a lot of people who like shitposting about games don't get how you get gameplay feedback with visuals and audio.>>50674381I assume it's supposed to mean a spaceship/sci-fi bullet hell. And I think that last question was not including the previous ones since I doubt he's thinking about something like Danmakun (well, maybe with his first line of questions he did)>>50674388Fair point as long as you're enjoying it. Many games have nice vibes and you just wander around appreciating the world the devs have made.Sometimes it feels as if most vidya related talk is from people who don't even play the games. Can get hilarious when people larp as players, but it's also kinda sad
>>50674637I've heard pic related is a game, does someone know how it's called?
>>50680177白い弾幕くん
>>50680438Very nice, thanks.
>>50674637>>50680438NTA but thank you too, this is a really interesting concept and one of the most minimalist games I've ever played
