why does japan still use dvds in 2026
>>
The DVD-Audio pictured is not the same as a DVD-Video. And as far as I know, while Super Audio CD still gets meme releases because of DSD, DVD-Audio basically got insta-killed by Blu-Ray. Any regular old Blu-Ray player can handle whatever crazy hi-res audio you throw on there with minimum 4x the storage capacity. DVD-Audio required special players.

Bluray is jam packed with DRM that make it hard to play your discs on your device of choice.

DVD > BD

japan uses a lot of out-of-fashion things like handwritten documents

Why would you not?
If the employed DRM could render your legally purchased discs unplayable, then there is hardly a difference to always-online DRM and streaming left.
BD failed for a reason (and it's NOT PS3). Sony thought the whole thing through too much from the producer side and not from the consumer side.
