Turbo secondary here who only knows Touhou through music. Any originalfags on /jp/ who can give me a history lesson on *why* there is so much Touhou music fan content compared to other game series? (Or rather I don't think I even know other games with fan songs.)In exchange I'll share some of my favorite circles.

>>50772415There isn't any history, every Touhou "game" is just a music album with a shmup as a bonus, it was like that from the very beginning.Before Touhou ZUN was primarily a musician, he wanted game devs to use his music, when he didn't find any he became the game dev, that's why the art and gameplay quality feel off compared to the music (though of course a lot of people will disagree here, but it won't change the fact that ZUN was first and foremost a musician not a game dev)

People do make remixes of game music and you can find it on youtube, but it's harder to sell those covers while with Touhou people can just sell albums of covers even beyond small conventions.Touhou music became really widespread with that and people making flash animations, otoMAD and such on the early days of internet memes so Touhou music has become quite "memetic" so to say.There's also the fact that a lot of people like the melodies but not so much the instrumentation(many people complain about ZUNpets especially in songs like Necro-fantasy). So probably a lot of people thought they could use the melody with more orthodox instruments and/or add vocals, which make the music more appealing to the general public. Or go the other way and experiment with their new music skills with some popular Touhou melody.Touhou music becoming a bit of a meme also made people wonder if they could compose Touhou-like songs and stuff like making fake songs for the upcoming game or a fake game pretending to be the new installment of the series.Since the fanworks thing applies also to games people made fan games with their own songs that sounded like Touhou. Like maybe with only extremely small variations? Are there cases of that happening in the past?
