I’ve been looking around recently and have begun thinking, can there be more to being an otaku in the modern age besides just consumption
At least in my experience it seems like across the board whether it’s 4chan or SMS, discussion of things has gone down and replaced with lots of infighting or culture war stuff
Social media is especially bad with how rampant engagement bait and automated feeds are - basically what I mean is it’s not a good outlet
Is there any place where not just consuming things, but creation, passion, and intrigue in the media / culture can be explored
Call me a LARPer but I do wonder if there is some way to form something, an ‘old Internet’ style group, hell whatever a doujin circle would even look like in the west, or even something as simple as a blog dedicated to anything no matter how niche
What I mean is; is there any room to move on from just consuming things and moving on
From this growing movement online of being part of a “fandom” or an in group, watching things for the social aspect while totaling disregarding the thing you’re watching/reading and its creators
A place that would enjoy, discuss, support and create all at once - not just endless slop and rage bait and low brow how big is too big threads

Anyway, gay ramble concluded now did any of this make sense or am I delusional

i've been seeing several posts musing that the board seems to be be having more "whiny baby slapfighting" than actual discussion as of late, so i don't think it's just you.
you could probably set up a neocities blog or something. there is room to get past just buying, buying, watching, watching, posting, posting; i am sure of it.
>>
Really depends on what you really are looking for. But it's pretty hard to get a sense of community in anonymous boards since people will always feed the troll or take the rage bait.

I would also say that it's hard to make a community in a place without usernames. If anything you get a board culture, since the idea is to not really know each other. If people want to make a collaborative project they will probably move elsewhere.
Still you can use boards to gather people, but it might be easier in forums with usernames. Not sure how many actual forums with anything otaku related are still around.

Some people have "built some sense of community" making groups that play online games or people doing OC.
I'm not sure how those communities are since I haven't really joined any.
Can't really recommend any site honestly. And I wouldn't blame anyone not wanting to share their place to gatekeep.

I wish we had more western doujin circles. The closest thing I know to a doujin community in the English net is the Touhou game development discord. Sadly that server is rife with modern identity politics.
/jp/ users tend to avoid all the culture war stuff on the internet (or at least they do better than other demographics). In that sense, I wish there was more creative output from /jp/ users, or at least a /jp/-adjacent space for creative people to gather. Maybe creating things is a young man's game though, so any creative space is inevitably going to contain modern teenshit like identity politics.

Dam, this is hell. Wonder if spam, the same anon or someone else with the same craving.
>>50775956
Yeah, wish politics took a seat back in stuff so that fandoms felt more unionized.
But every fandom/subfandom feels at least split into three with one of the two politic-focused parts becoming dominant in each place.

Interesting take on that, it’s possible

Touhou is way ahead of most otaku type groups in terms of creativity. One thing I feel is integral to so much of Touhou is that it's a rare (the only...?) example of a fanbase placing such an intense locus of creativity on the fans. Only other one that comes to mind is (Lord forgive me) bronies, and even then, they were ultimately backed by a multibillion dollar company, where ZUN is a random drunk Japanese Gen Xer

On Danbooru alone, a curated website, not even something like Pixiv that is more egalitarian and Japnese-centric, there are over 1 million Touhou images. Boatsluts, Genshins, horses, whatever the fuck Blue Archive character are supposed to be combined are barely over the number of pictures of Touhous, and those are all backed by massive corporations

Not even just digital images made in Photoshop, Clip Studio, whatever, all the brilliant crafts made on Booth for Touhou and found at Reitaisai. I think if you're looking for something that's an ecosystem of brilliance and creativity, you're in the right place as a Touhou fan

Also, this is just a bit of my own advice, try for a hobby or two outside otakuism. Me, I love coins. Really really really love coins. I find it a beautiful way to collect and invest in history all across the globe. I also collect bottles, and I'm very much into some other more niche historical hobbies, like digging hand-blown bottles in former dump sites and playing musical instruments (trying to teach myself oboe and it sounds slightly less like a dying duck every time I pick it up). I love literature, Touhou has inspired me to pick up more and more Eastern philosophy (mostly of Confucius, apologies to Futo and Byakuren)

The world can be a rich and beautiful place, just find your niche and go from there

I’d say if you want that sort of space the best thing to do would be to create it yourself
If you build it they will come
And don’t worry about how many people do
I think in general more and more people are being turned off by social media anyway

Holy fucking based
Let’s start a cult of yuugi anon

The only other fanbases I can think of where most of the work is supplied by fans is /tg/stuff. It obviously isn't quite the same.
Fanworks/isolated stories are the primary reason I care for Warhammer 40k.

I dreamed that I was travelling with some homo abuser who was feeding me benzos so that I was conscious maybe 5 minutes out of the year, once I deduced from nature that I was in Canada and then blacked out again

When I died I got to watch a kind of children's book style reel of the important events in my life and then I woke up

The guy's name was Andy and he made YouTube Kids videos

It's not about what you consume, it's about how autistically you do it.

HOLY TRUTH NUKE

Anything else about wondering what it means to be an otaku is unnecessary
It’s a state of being, you just are it
