If you want something emotional but not soul-crushing, Planetarian, Song of Saya, or Yume Miru Kusuri.
If you want a lengthy modern fantasy, Tsukihime or Fate/Stay Night.
If you want a lengthy emotionally-heavy gothic fantasy, House in Fata Morgana.
If you want a medium-length dark story in a bizarre world, Sekien no Inganock.
If you want an interesting take on meta-fiction, Slay the Princess.
If you want a story about disabled girls written by 4channers which is unironically a very good read, Katawa Shoujo.

Personally I'd recommend Yume Miru Kusuri and Song of Saya.

There's a reason why a third of the userbase decided to stay on the replacement places that were supposed to be temporary during the hack. Turns out, it's actually kind of nice to be somewhere where the moderation and owners give a shit and try to make the place good for the users rather than be somewhere where the moderation does its utmost to ruin the site, despises is culture, defends shitposters and bad actors and punishes posters of quality and people who actually wanna have discussions or create content.

I've lived well enough without really having anything image or textboard related with the three friends I have, and in another decade I'll be fertilizer. I don't need any of it anymore. I'm sure someone else will mock me for being here in the first place but to be honest I'm only back on jaypee to see how folks were handling it, and it was more depressing than I thought. not that anon, but i concur, the higurashi vn art style is objectively and outstandingly atrocious.
it's parallel to the western equivalent of an autistic deviantart user who doesn't improve over the course of ten (plus) years,

Alicesoft lost basically their entire investment on Evenicle 2 after it got banned from Steam in 2021. I am later to this news than I wanted to be but I am here to pay homage to a real VN enjoyer who made the scene at large much more accessible and easier to approach for a Western audience and to have a resource that gave us a real alternative to browsing stuff on obscure Japanese websites to collate into one place. He passed too young but at least for me, I will never forget him.
>>50782024
No, but he worked hard in the background for many things related in terms of really deep otaku stuff and supported VNs in their infancy so he was around a bunch in the communities with stuff there. Outside of VNs, he really was known for the software he provided and other things.
The reason why most people only know him as the VNDB guy is because a lot of the stuff later was obfuscated and absorbed with cults of personalities around translators and other efforts in the VN scene like the ones of Moogy and Tinfoil more or less dominating the scene afterwards with TLwiki and Tindabox. Wasn't positive even while things were in decline and the latter stopped working on VN stuff and the former just withered away. I worked in the background without ever getting into the cabal with my project. However, after it released and etc, it took me way too long for me to contact and email him this past winter season several months back about using his software in my translation. I got a very nice reply back, he seemed to be in good spirits so it was a shame to hear this. I am glad I at least was able to thank him.
>>
>>50781345
He was probably a lonely dude. He got to visit the place he wanted to since long time.
After he returned he realized he isn't young anymore, there is no living his anime/vn dream of love,
just endless grind of making his OSS projects.
So he decided it ain't worth it. There is probably many such cases, after all we are social creatures.
>>
>>50780494
F
>>
>>50782024
His lack of notoriety is due to him being non-opinionated / doesn't have any takes like moogy and co. so he doesn't get memed / clowned around. Also, he's not really into eroge, and I believe he can't even read Japanese. He only reads english vns.

He's more of linux geek, not the modern lgbtq trans one but the old richard stallman/cathedral and bazaar linux geek. His hobby is programming not reading vns. That said he did a lot of work behind the scene for the vn community. I know vndb gets a lot of flak due to some of their decisions but those are due to powertripping mods, not yorhel.

DESU I don't think he committed suicide, if he did he would've made a proper turnover procedure for his projects especially vndb. From what little I know of him he isn't really the type of guy to want his projects to disappear with him. But who knows, the last time I talked to him is more than a decade ago so I might be wrong.

>he worked hard in the background for many things
Echoing this. I was friends with yorhel for a while around the time he first introduced VNDB on the Visual News Gemot (what later became encubed). There was a lot of drama on the Gemot but he kept himself out of it and stayed focused on VNDB and helping other projects where he could. Over the years he did a lot of work behind the scenes and was something of an unsung hero of the VN community. He provided web hosting for various projects, helped with tooling for patch makers and just generally helped out whenever and wherever it was needed. This was all on top of all the other non-VN OSS projects he worked on.

>are they all so slow paced?
Kind of, especially the longer ones. Although, I find that's part of the appeal. The mundane parts build immersion and make the parts where stuff actually happens more impactful.
That being said, SubaHibi's pace really picks up after the first part.

> i'm also listening to all the voice lines because i feel like it's against the spirit of things to not
Don't force yourself if you feel like you're going too slow. Most VNs let you replay voicelines if you feel like you missed a good one.

>listening to all the voice lines
You don't have to. I do it because for me it's basically a very long anime and I enjoy hearing the voiced lines. I also read in Japanese these days so it actually helps me read faster too. But many people treat VNs like books and don't care about voices, turning them off and setting text speed to instant too. This is purely a matter of taste, and most VNs give you the option of reading them as you'd like.

Neither luck, nor grind, nor money conquers, it just earns or, in luck's case, grants you a heroine. Wits, on the other hand, count as conquering force.
But this is wrong comparison in the first place, because in gacha there is a separation between character in whatever story they have and the unit you may posses and interact with, even when the character and the unit represent the same person. In VNs, as the story is the gameplay, there is usually no unit-character separation, or at the very least the degree is no as severe as in gacha.

Looks like Yorhel's friends in Japan did not notice anything strange about Yorhel during his Japan vacation.

>This week, we received the devastating news from his family that our friend and co-worker Yoran Heling, known to most as Yorhel, had passed away without warning on March 17, 2026.

>He’s most widely known as the founder of VNDB, a great visual novel database that has supported the fandom and localization scene from its humble beginnings. However, he has also been the webmaster of Fruitbat Factory since our founding 12 years ago, and we knew him even before that from our time in the visual novel fan translation scene, where he was helping groups with hosting and other technical solutions. Yoran was a steadfast rock of the emerging localization scene, always around, uninterested in and even avoiding the spotlight, but he’s done more to make the current Japanese to English localization ecosystem exist than most people can appreciate, and he was an important member of our staff.

>Just this month, Yoran was visiting Japan for the first time, the country whose culture he’s been so entwined in for the longest time. I was very excited to learn about it, and gave him many tips for the trip. Ozhan had a chance to show him around Tokyo at the end of his trip – to my own everlasting regret, I missed him by a day on my own latest arrival to Tokyo, so I never got the chance to meet him in person, having to settle for Ozhan’s accounting of the places they went and things they did. By all accounts, he had a great time.

It depends on the type of otaku you are. I've lived in Japan for almost 10 years now. It's very convenient if you enjoy going to events. However, 90s and 00s culture is almost dead. It's really depressing that he decided to visit in one of the worst times possible. If he had come 2 years ago, it would have been better, and if he had come next year it would have been better. Xenophilia is now almost non-existent, whereas before 2020 many people would have been happy to show you around and take you to shops you've never heard of.

>>50784222
I don't know Yorhel, but perhaps something changed with relationships. Online relationships are really important to some people, and when trying to meet them in real life, you realize that the other party may never meet you or care to meet you, despite knowing you for 20+ years.

>>50781668
Everyone is saying he passed away, but not the reason why. If it was an accident they would have said so. If it was a medical complication, they would have said so. There are a few reasons people don't give a reason and suicide is one of them.

I really don't like how people immediately jumped to "he killed himself" for no reason whatsoever and are breaking their backs to try and find some way to justify that train of thought.

My grandfather was in excellent physical condition but died of a heart attack when he was 39 because he didn't have an enzyme and it gave him a blood clot or something like that.
People very much do die young without any forewarning, especially nearing middle-age.
Being pissed off at how things are in the present isn't indicative of suicide I wouldn't think because everyone is. For the same reason I wouldn't just assume a guy killed his wife because they had an argument and they found her dead a month later, I wouldn't assume someone would off themselves because of things I also don't particularly like watching. His recent trip to Japan may be related sure but it very well could have just been "fortunate" timing -- one of my best friend's grandfather died just a couple of days before he was shipped off to bootcamp and otherwise would've completely missed him on his deathbed.
Also the family not disclosing the cause doesn't inherently mean suicide, they could very well just not say publicly because the only people who it actually matters to would already know. How many families of the Kyoto Animation fire victims wanted to keep their obituaries private? Family and friends of public figures have reason to keep quiet about these kinds of things. Being close to a kinda former one myself, if the choice was up to me even if he just had a heart attack then for a while I'd just leave it at him not being around anymore. In mourning it's a lot easier to think about the abstract and come to terms with it more fully later, with a public spotlight on a loved one I can't imagine how much harder it'd get.

Regardless, it's still very sad to see. When I was in high school and one of the bleakest periods of my entire life, I used VNDB a lot to get my mind off of things because of the awe the sheer amount of games and companies were catologued on it put me in. It made me think of all the things I could read if I was ever able to again, and thinking about that long enough helped get me over the (unfounded mind you but I was 17 and a scrawny little bitch) crippling fear that I wouldn't even be able to.
Now that dream's a reality and has been for a while I do regret not going through the list I made as much as I could have, although I suppose there couldn't be a more appropriate time to finally play Ever 17. Even if I never spoke to Yorhel, I am happy that his most profound effect on me was during his lifetime, even if he'd have never known. Maybe I should get to writing emails to the creators of the forums I used to use. Rest in peace and thank you.

Considering Yorhel lived in the Dutch countryside, it is no wonder that he was lonely since his nearest next door neighbor must be living miles away from him.

No, the true reason for Yorhel's loneliness was that he prevented himself from going 100% weeb by being such a stubborn open source advocate that he refused to even use Twitter, even though over 60 to 70 percent of Japan's population uses Twitter. Such a restriction likely prevented Yorhel from directly engaging with his favorite Japanese creators on social media.

Zoomers think using twitter is actual social interaction lmao
We really are screwed with the way things are going. The ausfag under16 ban sounds good on paper, but the result will be that teens suddenly turning 16 will be thrown without warning into a world they do not fully understand. Exploits, scams and doxxing will be worse for them.

>>50787209
He could've been using nitter to check on posts for all we know.
>>
>>50790059
I disagree. They will have a more stable personality and will know how proper social interaction works. Even if entering social media throws them into turmoil, they can fall back to their better experiences.
Sure, maybe 16 is too young, or maybe the ban is not effective enough.
>>
>>50790059
In their defense, have you seen how irl interactions are nowadays? It's a total shitshow, somehow even worse than most parts of the net.
>>
>>50790213
I agree when it comes to proper 'social interaction'. But sadly the modern society expects you to be a discord/slack/teams zoomie, and that can introduce friction. I don't think banning kids outright is the way. Hell, we' ve all used forums and IRC back when we were 13 or so, right?
The difference was that it was not ALWAYS on. You had to use the family computer, or (in my case) go to a cyber café. The net wasn't everywhere and everytime... That was a GOOD thing.
>>
>>50790515
Forums or IRC are just ways to talk to other people on the internet. Social media is engineered to grab your attention and to keep you hooked by inducing an emotional rollercoaster and tricking your brain's reward functions.
