Basic Game Mechanics:
- Your current stats are those of the character who is currently the "board". Switching characters consumes a bit of spell meter, but it will switch the stats you are currently using, which can be very useful on different parts of the track. Learn the best places to switch characters to improve performance.
- The importance of all the stats is explained here: https://gensou-skydrift.fandom.com/wiki/Stats, but just know that they're all fairly important. It's recommended to choose two characters whose strengths complement each other. A good starting combination would be Reimu and Marisa: one is good at turning, the other is really fast, they're both fast in the air, and they're both relatively easy to use.
- Drifting helps conserve speed while changing direction and going around corners. Many characters slow down when turning normally, so drifting is highly useful in most cases.
- You gain spell meter quickly by passing through boost rings. You also gain it passively over time. Racers who are behind in the race get more spell meter than those in front.
- Pressing the spell button while the meter is full (green) will consume the meter and roll for a level 1 spellcard. Pressing the spell button while the meter is filled twice (blue) will consume the entire meter to roll for a level 2 spellcard (which is typically more potent). Generally, the racers in 1st-3rd place receive mostly offensive spellcards, racers in 4th-5th place receive both offensive and boosting spellcards, and the racers in 6th-7th place receive boosting spellcards. Spellcards can be seen here: https://gensou-skydrift.fandom.com/wiki/Spell_Cards
- When your LW meter (yellow) is full and your spell meter is also filled twice (it will appear yellow, too), you can press the spell button to consume both to get your LW. These spellcards are powerful and can change the course of a race. You typically can only use one, as most tracks aren't long enough to obtain a second.

>Advanced Knowledge and Tricks:
- Switching characters gives you a small boost. This will let you gain speed even on sections with no boost rings, and it's very important for speeding up after getting hurt.
- Jumping spellcards can be used on some parts of the tracks to hop over short fences, sizable gaps, or onto higher ledges for the sake of shortcuts that can help you get way ahead. It's recommended to save those spellcards for these shortcuts. When using them, be sure to activate them early enough to gain the height you need (or else you will run into the wall).
- Pressing down while in the air can give you a small vertical boost, sometimes called an "elevator" by people on the wiki. Use this to gain a little bit more height while flying or to help you cross small gaps without falling in. This can help with cutting really tight corners over ledges, like on Embers of Blazing Hell or Underworld City Depths, or when taking big flying shortcuts, like on Sea of Tranquility and Redevelopment Area B. Just keep in mind that you can only do this a single time before you have to touch the ground again. Also, pressing up while in the air will speed your descent.
- Break Drifting is probably the most important technique if you want to go faster. Normally, drifting helps conserve the speed you already have while also lessening the amount of speed you gain from boosts. So if you start a drift at the exact moment a boost ends (and not too much sooner, or else will you miss out on some acceleration), you can keep your heightened speed for longer. This is called "break drifting": https://gensou-skydrift.fandom.com/wiki/Break_Drift.. If you start break drifting after every single boost, you can stay at top speed constantly. Break drifting is more effective for characters with high Speed+Boost and low Drift, as they go faster and lose less speed from drifting..

>General Advice:
- Some tracks have big hidden shortcuts that don't require items. Some of them just require you to fly fast enough and far enough to skip a section of track or land somewhere high up. Try exploring the tracks on your own, watching other people while racing, or saving replays to review later (CPU players don't bother with shortcuts, so you won't learn those from them).
- Racers often save their spellcards and LWs for the final lap to help secure victory at the last minute. Prepare for that with your own spellcards to take shortcuts and give yourself immunity to offensive LWs.
- Don't let it get to you when you get fucked up by spells and bad luck or just can't seem to get ahead of the other racers. We've all been there, and managing it is just part of the game. Just keep racing with us and keep learning more and trying new things, and you will get better with time and effort. Everyone here was also new once, after all.

A while ago it was suggested we add some kinda rule to mess with champions, so that repeat victories are less common and therefore cooler. Like perhaps the other racists vote to decide one or even both of the characters that the reigning champ has to use in the next tournament? It could be fun to make him work a lot harder to keep his spot. And it'd also be fun for everyone else to pick the character(s) that screws with him the most.
>>
>>50811454
Yeah sucks he got burnt out it seems, of the game I mean

>>50811533
Not really a fan desu I really dislike the idea of others meddling with my style and stuff, at this point if we keep implementing things like that it should be a whole separate event
>>
I really hope that Japanese guy who’s always using Double Swako and waiting for hours for the match to start will join us too… but he’s probably still a kid and doesn’t even have a smartphone yet.
>>
>>50811533
I figure if you win a third time then we can mess with you a little.
I think you should get a fair shot at 3 like every other champion, but by 4 in a row it just becomes excessive.
>>
>>50812508
Does he know about us on /jp/? I think he just joins us in Ranked, no?
>>
I kinda liked that impromptu rule that let the players decide which tracks were in the elimination rounds
>>
Is there gonna be pre-tourney practice tonight? If so, I'm not gonna be able to unless it drags on late, I've got something I gotta do.
>>50812508
Oh, THAT guy.
Ugh, he's my new enemy. I've played Ranked sessions against him where we spend the entire time sandbagging against each other to try to get our LW to try to rape the other guy with at the last second. Truly the same kind of evil him and I.
>>
>>50817056
yeah I probably won't be able to attend tonight either sadly. you're starting the sabotage early though with that pic, huh dude?
>>

>>
>>50817095
well so far our current format has been:
1. racers race during main phase and win points
2. main phase ends, points are tallied, and the top 6 racists are chosen
3. if there are 8 or more racers, then everyone below 6th place has to race in a wild card elimination to decide who the 7th will be.
4. from there, the finalists will race in eliminations until only 3 remain. when three remain, then the winner of the next race will be the champion, meaning that the number of final elimination races will always be 2 fewer than the initial number of finalists.
and in the last tournament, we decided that the racers got to decide what the elimination tracks would be, with the racer in 1st deciding what the last track would be, the racer in 2nd deciding what the second-to-last track would be, all the way until the racer in 5th decides what the first track will be. maybe we can also let the 6th racer decide the track for the wild card elimination, just so he gets something too?
>>
>>50817111
points 1 to 4 sound logical but everything after that reads like a mario party-esque crapshoot
>>
>>50817122
the main phase is kinda pointless for everyone that isn't at risk of getting eliminated, so letting the players choose the elimination tracks based on their performance on the main phase at least gives them something to do once it becomes clear that they'll qualify no matter what they do. plus, if there are 7 or fewer players, then the main phase is pointless for everyone because the points don't even do anything.

>apparently no stream
>almost a full day without a single reply
I'm not gonna be racing tonight so it feels even worse to point these things out but man it really sucks to see this event in such a state, it's literally over, owari da :'c
Maybe we should focus on getting more people in and sorting this stuff out before hosting a tourney again cause it pains me to see this
>>
>>50820674
First post >>50811436 said it best. The skydrift tournament died with VD (more like when he left, not his literal death lol). It was always gonna be hard following that sort of dedication to hosting and promoting this thing. I guess proof of that was that as soon as he left, pretty much everyone else that was competitive or had won before left too. Dont be down bro, we can have fun at least and also I take this as a wake up call to get off our asses and put in the work if we're gonna keep this thing alive
>>
Pretty sure Aki is gonna be the host, unless he's decided otherwise. He might not be as vocal as VD, but we shouldn't downplay his efforts. We won't "get" another host if we don't aknowledge those who are trying to be one. Besides, it's not like VD wasn't struggling sometimes, either, with dead threads and low turnout. Anyway, part of what made the older threads fun was that people were chatting a lot, talking smack, making art, etc. We still have a bunch of people who are capable of that if they try. But probably we will have to put in extra effort and, just as importantly, be receptive to the efforts of others if we want that kind of culture.
Regarding newcomers and lack thereof, I am of the opinion that by this point our group is too skilled for new people to want to stay with us, even if they are willing to try. We can either find a way to handle this, advertise more to get a wider net (though the only place where I can think of where you can get lots of decent players would be there discord), or maybe broaden our gaminf horizons, maybe by transitioning into some kind of /jp/ game night group that plays more than one game.
Honestly I don't mind just remaining as a small skydrift group either, but then we would have to do something to spice things up and keep it more lively. Keeping everything the same has led to things feeling stale imo.
>>
>>50820674
Eh, it is what it is. Everything eventually fizzles out, and tourney hype would be no exception. Maybe this lull would finally give one of our less skillful competitors a fighting chance to take the title? lol
But in a seriousness, I feel like things were bound to end up like this eventually, even if VD hadn't had exploded into a million pieces after that failed grenade juggling routine (R.I.P). You can only keep on doing the same thing for so long before people find it stale, or their personal lives take priority. It's just how it goes.

>FORMAT and DA RULES
>Regular phase
12 random races, normal point system:
1st place – 10 points
2nd – 8 points
3rd – 6 points
4th – 4 points
5th – 3 points
6th – 2 points
7th – 1 point

TOP 2 from each lobby qualify directly to the playoffs.
3rd and 4th placed racists advance to the WILD CARD RACE

>PLAYOFFS
The player that finishes in LAST PLACE is automatically ELIMINATED. The rest of the players go on to the next race until ONLY 3 RACISTS ARE LEFT. They will then race in a single FINAL RACE, in which the one that finishes 1st becomes the Champ.

(2 FULL LOBBIES)
12 regular rounds > Top 4 from each Lobby go through, however... > Best 2 from each Lobby automatically advance to the Playoffs (A1, A2, B1, B2) > A3, A4, B3 and B4 will race in a single WILD CARD RACE in which 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will go through to complete the final 7 player lobby > 5 playoff races in five different tracks until only 3 players remain > Final race

If we lack players the highest scoring players will choose the elimination tracks
>>
Here is the order

>>50820802
>some kind of /jp/ game night group that plays more than one game.
tbf this was exactly how this game came to be played here at /jp/ and iirc van dough himself said he created the tourneys as a way to grow a community around the game that would play it regularly since it wasn't played as often as he would've liked.
i remember the old game night threads, i dunno what happened to them now that you mention it. maybe the tranny jannies banned them for some* reason
*that reason being giving preference to vtumor and other non /jp/ secondary shit threads

>>50820974
Here's what I did when I hosted two months ago. You might wanna change the scoring system to suit you, since I used a simplified one:

Today I am running a tournament for a videogame called Gensou SkyDrift. After each race, the various players will gain points based on their placing within the race. Getting higher places awards more points as so:
1st place – 5 points
2nd – 4 points
3rd – 3 points
4th – 2 points
5th – 1 point.
I want you to keep track of the number of races and the number of points that each player has accumulated so far. After I give you the placings of the latest race, you will display a table of the players ordered by their overall points from highest to lowest. The header of the table should be "/jp/ SkyDrift Tournament XII - Round _", with the blank space being replaced by the number of the race. There will be twelve races total, so feel free to provide some commentary on how the players are doing.
Are you ready?

If there aren't game night threads, then yeah we could always start making them ourselves and keep playing different Touhou stuff. Ideally stuff that's not just 1v1, so more people can goof around at once. If we wanted to keep on racing, then we could probably even get a Touhou modpack together for SRB2, which is pretty fun from what I've played.

Hosting suggestions (Please comment on these)
Do not do elimination for only 1 lobby (maybe an alternate playoff method?)
Remove Hagykouro from random tracks (does anyone like it?)
Streamline and clarify rules
Practice runs (for me)
Fix whatever bug I have for spectating
Anything else?
>>
>>50821526
>Remove Hagykouro from random tracks (does anyone like it?)
Nay. If it sucks it sucks for everyone. Deal with it

>Streamline and clarify rules
I mean it was all pretty clear before so I don't see why it was changed at all after vd left

>Practice runs (for me)
Wdym for you?
>>
>>50821526
>Do not do elimination for only 1 lobby (maybe an alternate playoff method?)
I think playoffs are cool, so if people vote against eliminations then I'd like to figure out another way to do them. I sympathize with Kai for getting eliminated after doing so well too.
>Remove Hagykouro from random tracks (does anyone like it?)
the track sucks, but I win a lot on it. so let's keep it :)
>Streamline and clarify rules
very important. they caused a lot of confusion this time.
>Practice runs (for me)
sure, we could do a "practice" tournament sometime
>Fix whatever bug I have for spectating
idk how to do that lol
>Anything else?
I think you should prioritize what is fun and exciting to play rather than being very serious. this game is for us racists rather than the spectators who might assume that the game is worse off because we're veering from tradition
>>
>>50821535
>this game is for us racists rather than the spectators who might assume that the game is worse off because we're veering from tradition
I was mostly with you until that line. It's clearly not what it was and you can see that with the bitching early on today about no hype and low turnout tho we've discussed that already but I really don't think changing it too much to the point where it's unrecognizable from what made us all like it would do any good.
>>
>>50821531
Technically elimination was only used once by VD and it was a larger group. Our attempts at adapting it are inconsistent, confusing, and poorly explained.
>Wdym
I made quite a few mistakes. I need to practice hosting.
>>
>>50821546
if you joined us instead of talking about how it's not as good as it was in your day, then low turnout wouldn't be a huge issue, man
>>
>>50821553
in fact, now that I think about it, low turnout was an issue from the 7th(?) tourney onwards, which is the whole reason VD had to invite guys from discord. nabana, pony rojo, boots, eagler, and maybe more? all from discord iirc. maybe we'll have to resort to that sometime again, idk
>>
i honestly didn't like it, will probably not even bother if i see "elimination phase" and will just quit the moment it comes... really soured me up
>>
>>50821553
I mean, the reason I didn't join was precisely because I had fun before (a long time ago to be completely fair) so after seeing the thread and considering if maybe I should hop back in it just isn't appealing to me even as a spectator in the thread after seeing all these quite frankly random and sudden changes in place that seem arbrtrary. Some people even said I was trolling which igaf about but that post asked for comments and those are my honest 2 cents, so if you guys want to take that as trolling then I guess there's no helping it .

Think its fine dude, but if others oppose, then we'll think of something I guess

It is simply a skill issue if anybody else struggles with it

>Practice runs (for me)

if you're actually not a troll then I apologize. it's just that it's hard to hear out someone who speaks so authoritatively about what /jp/ skydrift should and shouldn't be when you follow up with the admission that you haven't actually played with us in ages, and therefore didn't feel the boredom that had us change formats to begin with
>>

>>
>>50821553
No offense but that anon does have a point we shouldn't immediately retaliate in response to criticism.
>>50821571
In our defense, the elimination thing was instituted by VD towards the end when he was getting experimental. I think we may have been a little hasty to assume it as a full fledged form. But I am not quite sure how to hone it. I didn't really race in that many tournaments.
>>
>>50821594
His playing style is to deliberately stay in last place and then try to make a comeback in the LW, but it’s seriously boring to watch.
>>
>>50821590
Yeah my bad too if I let my oldfag privileges go to my head and sounded like a prick, I don't mean to shit on anyone having fun at all, I'm just saying that things could be better but maybe I am simply too fond of the old ways and the guy who made it when I was there at the start. For example I watched the last stream Vd hosted and shit was genuinely so good both production and racing wise. And what I'm saying is that I just wish newbies could experience that (me too since I didn't join that one kek but watch it again and take note on what made it great)
>>
>>50821608
yeah I hate bagging. not just because it's boring, but because it's also pretty effective unless several people are ALSO bagging
>>
>>50821594
He loves the game so much he doesnt even have to get in a match, its all his head like champ

>>
>>50821610
yeah that tournament was honestly awesome. iirc that one DID have an elimination round at the end, which was so hype that it's part of the reason I think we should try to keep something like that.
however I will point out that VD's friend, Jacucasa (I think that was his name) was the one who was handling all the streaming stuff, so he's the one who really ought to get the credit. sadly he lost interest when VD left too, and we're left trying to figure out the rest. you never know how much work this shit is until you have to handle it yourself I think! lol

I'm saying that your chance to change it will be soon so be sure to say what you think when that comes. I sympathize with you because I felt pretty much the same way after the 10th tournament, but then some changes were made as a result and the 11th was much better

>>
sup guys

>>50824478

>>
I have to go but may be back in a bit
>>
>>50824478
