It's like how people kept shitting on Megaman 4-7 despite not even playing them, because "the story was stupid". The manga only really exists to supplement the games and make the world more vibrant. Only FDS has been living a life of its own. And arguably Touhou has been becoming more story-heavy over the years. Just compare the amount and style of dialogue before and now.
