I forgot to do my yearly post yesterday. Obviously nobody noticed or cared. It's been 12 years since I started learning Japanese. In the last year, as usual, nothing of note happened. For an active learner progress becomes miniscule and invisible after a few years. I decided to get into Touhou and so spent significant effort learning to read the various names and spellcards of the games as I went through them. One thing to know is that you will never automatically learn things, as it were. Touhou is filled with extremely Japanese concepts that don't really come up much in normal day-to-day life as a westerner, so it takes conscious study to understand everything. It's not really that significant, just some time spent on wiki pages or character profiles, but I don't really have anything else to say. If you never go out of your way to study or learn about something, you will never find yourself one day automatically knowing it, so it's not good to avoid things. I know someone who, despite learning Japanese, decided to play Touhou in English just for convenience. Therefore, they will probably die never learning much about it in Japanese. I suppose I should talk about LLMs. It's not really something I want to bring up since the topic is tainted, but there will be shitposting no matter what. I think that the main power for LLMs in advanced Japanese learning right now is twofold: one, faking a conversation in the target language, and two, asking for grammar corrections. (I can't speak about how it is for beginners, since I would have no experience there. Maybe it's good if you ask it for clarification on sentences or grammar concepts, I don't know). For point one, I think many will be socially maladapted enough to not feel comfortable joining random Japanese discords or whatever, so having an instant-access partner to talk to in Japanese is actually pretty meaningful. I think something like "spend 1 hour talking to chatgpt in Japanese" a day, for those socially unwilling to make Japanese friends to talk to for hours instead, is probably one of the best ways to hone production. A problem I face when talking to Japanese people is I'm slow to formulate my replies; the only way to get faster is practice, and with an LLM you're at least not wasting someone's time.As for grammar corrections, I think it's pretty powerful to type up a sentence, then ask an LLM what mistakes it has. Asking for it to fully formulate sentences for you is no good, that denies you practice and it will probably be wrong, but from what I've seen it's good at noticing minor errors in grammar that would otherwise have signaled one's lack of fluency. I think JSLs will probably be a lot more comfortable talking in Japanese openly thanks to the security an LLM provides that they aren't being retarded. The kind of funny thing here, though, is there is somewhat less of a practical need for language mastery. It's not like you have to become a master or you'll look retarded when trying to type. Instead, you only need to get half-decent, then an LLM can bridge the rest of the gap. That's kind of nice. Of course, if you want to go to Japan and speak in person, that's another story, though casual in-person conversations are more simple than what most text conversations will be. I went there two years ago, as nobody remembers. Anyway, that's all. Until next year.

Back in the day I was really disappointed when Aiyoku no Eustia wasn't fully translated, among other things, and started learning to read them. Eventually I did read them, and moved on to just reading things in Japanese for fun. I also stopped doing Anki after the fourth year (although that has hurt my vocabulary in some areas), so it's only 4 years of active study, rather than 12 years of constantly study. In terms of accomplishments, in my eyes there's really nothing better than being able to easily and actively consume Japanese media without a barrier, so that's good enough for me. There's really not much to report since I'm just spending 12 hours a day playing games and reading and stuff. I mentioned Touhou just because it presented some interesting linguistic challenges and there's not much else to talk about. I don't particularly dunk on any English friends, in part since most of my social circle already knows Japanese.
