Finished umineko ep1. It was mostly boring, but I enjoyed the last few chapters, not sure if the payoff was good enough but it seems like a good setup. Still not half as good as onikakushi was, if I make a direct comparison with higurashi, hopefully it gets better.
Just a question to set my expectations right, I don't feel like this is going to be shipping kino like higurashi was, right? Half the characters are married hags, literally. Jessica and Maria are his cousins (not that I mind but I don't think they are going that route). Shanon seemed like the best possible option, but it seems she is intended for the annoying cousin instead of Battler. That leaves the witches that will get introduced later, should I expect anything from them?

The audio balance is tragically horrendous, though. You constantly have to fight being able to hear the voice acting or the music in the settings. I thought this was a PC mod issue that amateurs couldn't handle, then I watched footage of Japanese Switch Saku arcs. No, it really is just that bad. The VA is also compressed to all hell, too. Umineko deserves better in 2026, but the PS3 ports are ancient, and there's probably nobody willing to do the work to improve that aspect.

I felt like in Higurashi also there were some songs that were barely audible while others were insanely loud, and I always wondered whether that was the mod's fault. The Switch version of Umineko has an option to dampen the background track any time a character is talking which helps the balancing a little bit but there are some times where characters will talk over an entire track and kind of ruin the mood.

It's sad because 07th mod is so well developed. The audio balance in it is great, but Umineko languishes. Black Liliana is an amazing song, but I don't want it drowning out every single thing Beatrice says! Golden Fantasia is getting a new version made for Arcades, Cross exAceed.

This version is made by exA-Arcadia though, which have a history of picking up old games and making new versions of them, like "Breakers Revenge Chicago" and Arcana Heart 3 Xtend, and they basically never port their games anywhere, so we'll probably never see it on pc.

It's been translated for over a decade now so you should try it if you think you'd like reading a very long horror mystery.
I kind of think of 07th as a sister series to Type Moon, if you know TM?. For TM Tsukihime broke big as a cult classic at comiket then one year later for 07th Higurashi. Then the big spiritual sequel VNs Fate S/N and Umineko came later for each company. Except Fate broke into the bigleagues and Umi sort of crashed and stayed at a cult classic level.

The modern 2020 Higurashi anime is a massive betrayal of the fans, don't watch it until you've seen all the good stuff and be thankful you weren't around for it live.
The 06 Higurashi anime is legendary for many reasons and it's full of nostalgia but it's very much inferior like all VN adaptions but especially cutting an 80 hour suspense mystery wrecks a lot of things.

Also I wouldn't worry about the weird side stories, the orthodox way is to read chapter 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8. All the weird side stories, well some love them some hate them but don't let it confuse you, you don't have to touch them until after. They were added years after for a bunch of different things like the DS version.

And if you want to speculate about the mystery as yo uread you're welcome to but you'll also definitely get hit with spoilers. Here and /v/ and /a/ are spoiler heavy territory for WTC.
