I think he just prefers that stage of romantic tension where the heroine slowly shifts from indifference or aversion to affection for the protagonist, but in a subdued, implicated way where she is trying to hide it. This works well with a protagonist who is kind of autistic, and a heroine who is almost opposed to romance like Aoko. Basically anything that becomes as explicit as a direct confession would be boring by comparison. So he just endlessly prolongs that initial stage with little interest for anything beyond that lol. He's actually stronger than dominant Roa with SHIKI as his vessel. He has the biggest moveset in the original VN, and his reflexes and clawsmanship is out of the roof. He literally blocks a surprise attack from NANAYA (you can argue that this is because of their life link but he doesn't even know he's Shiki).
Not to mention shit like his eyes/lifedrain being a natural counter against Arcueid for example on top of just being very strong. In his first encounter with Shiki in Far Side, when he gets serious Shiki can only hope for a mutual kill even with his eyes (due to SHIKI's speed), before Akiha steps in of course.
If anything, Roa is just a weaker SHIKI (in the original VN).
If you still have your doubts, just wait for Red Garden and Type Lumina's sequel to come out. If you don't want to wait, go check out Carmine in Undernight and read SHIKI's wiki (don't treat the wiki like the Bible but it *can* be a good source of information, though it is quite lackluster in a lot of ways sadly).
He most certainly has something on par with Mind's Eye (False) and he also has an ability that allows him to put limbs from other people onto himself, which will definitely be visited upon in the Remake. Expect some nice body horror.
Just don't believe what that schizo Syn says about him. He's very strong but he's not stronger than True Roa.
Oh and also, fuck FGO but a Tsukire collab was confirmed a while back. You can check out his stats there if they add Berserker SHIKI there.

Even Ciel route Roa in the original who goes solo against Shiki gets hit by a bullshit move where Shiki does some weird AoE MEODP slice that one shots him from 20 meters away, not to mention Arcueid. SHIKI simply never has to deal with this sort of bullshit. The main threat he faced was Akiha, whose powers he knew about.

Well that's Tamamo and Rani's route done.
I don't think my opinion on the game has changed all that much. Gameplay really does stink, and it almost stinks more once you get Tamamo strong enough and just spam spells against the mobs with literally zero thought. Bosses still required some modicum of thought but still relatively easy.
I did beat Monster also, definitely a hard ass fight, I kind of feel like I just got lucky one attempt but whatever, I got the win. Also just spoiling actual story comments.
Having done both "routes" it really feels mixed, like there's not one best way to play. Which I guess is kind of a good thing. I liked Tamamo don't get me wrong, but I just feel like growing with Nero feels way more fulfilling and exciting. You really feel like you've earned her respect by the end I thought. Also with Rin vs Rani that split is even weirder. I feel like Rin actively helps you much more and is generally more talkative with you, which isn't surprising. But then on the other hand the whole "Rani is a homunculus who starts to become more human" is obviously a nice like parallel to Hakuno too. Also man, I really wish Pieceman just had a bit more presence in the story. I like the masters you fight and think they add a good deal, but that last Pieceman encounter is just done really well, I kind of hate this kind of "last minute" villain stuff but I really like him. Also just in general, I noticed this time around the game is actually surprisingly quaint. Ignoring the whole "The Moon is a Holy Grail supercomputer" stuff, the game is really easy to follow and simple. Hell even the moon stuff is pretty easy to grasp if you don't have autism and go overboard. I really feel like it'd be easy for someone to make an Extra style game that really really clicked with me, this wasn't it though, but I did like it.

I don't know, unsurprisingly we might just have slightly different taste. It's not like it's the most unique trope or motivation in the world but I just thought his whole story and realization that the war he hated so much, was what made him into who he was and subsequently all the wars he saw going forward made all the impressive things he saw possible. I don't agree with him at all, but I just think it's a perfect storm of his philosophy, the state of the world of Extra, and Hakuno's state (a "person" basically born and raised in a war) all coming together to make just a special villain for me.

But like I said, I think you'd probably at least REMEMBER he existed if he didn't show up two (2) other times before this, and one of those times you don't see his body and then the other time he doesn't say anything and nobody acknowledges it.

Even though people say it doesn't really matter which you go through first, Mahoyo or Kara no Kyoukai, I feel like Mahoyo first is probably the better option. Getting to see a relatively chilled out Touko after how angry and damaged she was in Mahoyo is a nice change of pace. Although I'm pretty sure she shows up in a bonus chapter that I haven't read yet, so maybe the effect isn't as strong as I think.

Also (You), who finished Extra, I hope you'll have fun with CCC. I'm currently at Chapter 6 and I can easily say that the devs did their homework. Gameplay is the same rock-paper-scissors, but enemy placement and "dungeon" layout is so much better. It makes exploring more enjoyable and even grinding doesn't feel boring.

Cleared the first chapter in CCC and I'm not gonna blog post the whole thing but it's kind of nuts how much of a departure this is from Extra. Already has a real, genuine plot, lots of characters that actually feel alive, and gameplay in general just feels a lot better.
I know discussing this is like 100 steps ahead of myself but I also feel like there's no way this game ever gets remade after the Extra remake comes out (lol). This is just so sexually charged there's no level of censorship that would make it acceptable for the kind of prudes out and about now.

The phone was really underutilized because Nasu is a boomer. Shiki uses it in four optional scenes. He texts Arihiko once at the hotel to get him to lie about why he's skipping school, he gets texted by Kohaku that Arcueid showed up at the mansion, he uses some japanese google maps app to inspect an abandoned building by himself and he has a photoshoot with Arcueid in an alleyway.

You know what? I like FGO lore/the story, I wish it was a proper game not mobile slop though, like a JRPG or something.

It's better that it's used less so that it disrupts the plot and urban fantasy vibe less. The addition of phones and modern gadgets in general already detracts from the mystery (literally and figuratively) so I think it's best that it's kept to a minimum. He didn't reduce the usage of the phone because he's a boomer though no way.

One thing that bothers me a bit with pretty much all of Nasu’s works is his weird romantization of the ordinary. In many cases the protagonist just thinks “oh well, I guess I will just lead my normal life now”.
This doesn’t make much sense to me personally, I always go 100% on life.
Of course, we don’t live in a fantastical world and this just means working on my career, but if I was Shiki, the equivalent would probably be me trying to become a bloodborne protagonist or something like that. It’s a weird anti-growth philosophy, I wonder if there is some cultural context that I’m missing.

Actually, immediately after writing this I remembered the “flying vs floating” discussion from Kara no Kyoukai that is exactly about this, so I guess there is some awareness of this conundrum. The Myth of Sisiphus and all.

The price is that you'll most likely die in the next few years on a battlefield and if you don't, your reward is retiring in a monastery once your body is too old or crippled to continue. That... doesn't sound like a great deal to me. Gimme the office job.

It always felt so arbitrary considering what True Ancestors are, I mean it would make sense for DAs to be cursed with feeding on humans since they're just a pale imitation of TAs. This is the big thing. Ciel herself is okay in the original, but her route is 80% identical to Arcueids and you have to take some pretty questionable choices to enter it in the first place.

It's a Kagetsu Tohya remake (Twilight Glass Moon was KT's subtitle, Twi-Lumina, go figure, also the key art is literally a remake of KT's cover) but the thing is Kagetsu Tohya doesn't have any Far Side characters except Nanaya (who was already shown partially in boss rush) and Kouma (who we already have, and he even says his role isn't in TL lol), no SHIKI or Satsuki. But, if we are fortunate enough, it'll be a late 2026 release for Red Garden.
Think of it like this:
Early to Late 2026 > Tsukihime Remake Collab in FGO after Red Garden's release date announcement to shill Red Garden, the collab is already confirmed to be something Nasu wants to do and FGO isn't doing as good as it was in numbers as it used to, it has fallen in revenue to the lowest it's been since at least 2018 and it's lower than 100 in the App Store, not even Francesca could get it to #1, so it might be a good opportunity to get RG out of the way while shilling FGO at the same time.
Late 2026 > Red Garden
Early 2027 > Kagetsu Tohya Remake (Twi-Lumina)
Late 2027 > More Red Garden characters, probably the more spoiler-y ones (True Roa for example, since technically we'll be seeing him for the first time, the closest we got was in Actress Again where his moveset is True Roa's, in the Remake he gets access to his magecraft the moment he takes over SHIKI, not having to wait so they just made him Roa's H-moon, however we might very much so get a toned down C-Roa as True Roa since he'll be an entirely new character essentially, given his original body restoring his full power and personality)
Early 2028 > Melty Blood update (Warachia, Sion, Riesbyfe, remade Melty Blood plotline using the boss rush base, remake of OG Melty essentially)
Early to Late 2028 > KnK collab (Ryougi, possibly Souren since he has a Melty profile already), made alongside the second KnK collab in FGO where Nasu FINALLY releases the short story with Touko and Azaka. Ryougi is more or less a given, as she's a fan favorite character and Linne in Undernight is directly based on her.

Okay I said I wouldn't blog post all of CCC, and I still wont, but man the writing has just been so turned on these last two chapters and the interlude. Like I did still like the start of the games writing, but Lip's chapter was really great and Jinako's chapter was insanely brutal, I really wasn't expecting all of that. Also the whole interlude section was just so cool. Really happy with my pick of Gilgamesh, it's been a great time with him.
Also getting his SG2+Second Matrix made me realize the super slight parallels between Hakuno and Enkidu, two "empty" beings. No spoilers in case they touch on this, but I wonder just how much Gilgamesh actually knows about Hakuno with his clairvoyance.
