Let's brainstorm a theoretical scenario:There is an open world crime sandbox being developed, in the same style as Grand Theft Auto/Saints Row/Sleeping Dogs, set in Tokyo/Japan. Naturally, a game like this has to have radio stations to listen to while in the car, and that means lots of licensed tracks. What music would (You) add to the game? Keep in mind that these tracks should be in Japanese and that there is bound to be plenty of different stations(metal, hip-hop, pop, rap ect.) so variety is welcome. Bonus points if it's a track that is actually likely to play on the radio there IRL.(I actually made this thread on /mu/ first, but my dumbass realized that if anyone is going to know the answer to this question, or at least know what kind of music is popular in Japan, it would be this board)
there are far better places on the internet to find out what music is popular in japan
>>50866138Correct, but on here, they speak English. I'm thinking of just tuning into some radios around Tokyo area, even if I won't understand the language, but I would like names to start off with, at least.
>>50865586I would put in a station that plays 2000's era VK music. It's not exactly a mainstream genre of music but it's still popular enough that it wouldn't be weird if there was a radio station that played it.I only say 2000's era VK because that's the era of the genre that I'm most familiar with, but it can be modern VK too. That said, I haven't really kept up with the genre past 2010 or so, so I wouldn't really know what would be on it if it had to be stuff from recent years.
>>50866360Older stuff is fine, I already charted out a lot of English songs and there are some from as far back as 1980s so it's fine. Never heard of this genre, so post me a few songs as examples.
>>50866376It's a genre that emphasizes visual presentation (hence the name) so a lot of the bands of the era tend to wear flashy or bizarre outfits but musically, the sound can range from anything from gothic rock to power metal and even pop. The singer in the first video in particular went on to become a successful mainstream pop star, Gackt if you are familiar with him. https://youtu.be/L0_fUEOz3dY?si=AFAcRTcksasehjfzhttps://youtu.be/Wch4WH_jzyI?si=GO_zXu3X7xyUhkfXhttps://youtu.be/jaWI_YmmhhQ?si=D9-6NP9Hr7xMRrN6https://youtu.be/FLClmWJn7dw?si=bhqyiaajLJR7Hg99https://youtu.be/0YH3ldBzTl4?si=mM4QiGnDIn7Pssl0https://youtu.be/x1I3JLVs8YI?si=G3Gn8q1mddyswtL9
>>50866401I am not familiar with Japanese music culture at all, hence this thread. Is this genre popular, or is it more underground?I will check out these vids later, thanks.
>>50866419I don't know how it is these days but back then it used to be a bit more underground, though there were the occasional bands that made it big. As far as awareness goes, I think most Japanese people are probably aware that it exists, with non fans finding the costume aspect of it a bit wacky. I suppose they are not much different from western goth adjacent genres in that sense.
>>50865586a yakuza game???
>>50866434You wouldn't know anything about Japanese metal scene, would you? I know it exists, but that's about it. I got enough English songs for the Metal station(even threw in a bit of Rammstein in there for the hell of it), but I need some native music as well. >>50866444(Checked) Something like that, except nothing like the actual Yakuza games. Think: Sleeping Dogs set in Tokyo, with a dash of Saints Row(1+2)/Grand Theft Auto for good measure.
>>50866452I'm much patchier on regular metal but I can drop a thing or two. The funny thing about the first one is that they featured on an episode of Anthony Bourdain's show where he goes to Japan, which caught me completely off guard because they are not exactly a big band.https://youtu.be/IXhQ6cHfXuo?si=PpG7RKELubFCaRT8https://youtu.be/UpdV9vITTIg?si=mHlwsXvyIeIYbUb0https://youtu.be/JR4uey1__r0?si=tD8PkNzmJ87ZmBvthttps://youtu.be/8vYIy9n62Pk?si=RE-zIwklvwTQdfmx
>>50866488I got to run in a bit, doubt this thread is going to be here by the time I come back tomorrow. Are there any places in particular I can browse to see what music Japanese are listening to, their /mu/ so to speak? I know about 2/5ch but I believe they're both dead, or at least well past their prime. There have to be more popular sites.
>>50865586the game should take place in 80s japan so we can listen to some japanese city pop songs
>>50866530Don't worry, this board is usually slow enough that it'll be here for the coming week. Unfortunately I wouldn't know where their /mu/ equivalent is. These days I just find new things by leapfrogging through videos on Youtube.
>>50866157bro you can just use wikipediahttps://radio.garden/visit/japan/g4h2RP28listen.moe and r/a/dio are not actual japanese radio stations... larpers
>>50866541The theoretical game would take place in modern day, but an alternative universe. Still, that doesn't really matter, if you have any 80s pop songs, list them here. The more, the merrier. Do let me know if any of them were actually popular at one point, I barely keep up with western music let alone foreign ones. I want a good mix of "best hits" and some more obscure stuff.
>>50866552I think what we call city pop songs weren't a hit back in the 80s'
